Tanner’s smile was sweet and broad. ‘Dr Mel says there’s nothing better than reading!’ Frank struggled to swallow the tightness in his throat. They really adored her. It was something special.

‘She’s usually right about these sorts of things.’ His son nodded sagely. The dark hair, growing to be more like Frank’s every day flopped into his eyes. ‘You like her huh?’ Ever the thoughtful kid, Tanner pondered the question for a long moment. His hazel eyes sweeping to his sister curled into his side. ‘We both do. Her and Becca!’

Frank ruffled his hair, trying to not collapse with relief. Okay it hadn’t been such a long shot that his kids would like Mel. But you never knew. ‘I’m glad.’

Tanner quickly tried to fix his hair. Frank didn’t comment on the childish glare he got at messing up his do. But those eyes, just like Abby’s met his dad’s. Steady and years old. ‘Well you like her Dad.’

Oh that wasn’t even the half of it. ‘Yeah I do. Go back to your book buddy.’ Tanner fist bumped him with a grin. Frank paused, arms full of partially eaten food. A weight easing off his shoulders. Tanner spoke so assuredly. If he said Taylor liked her too. Well it had to be true. Both kids had yet to learn how to lie. Scary when that day came. Both their parents being experts in misdirection and deception. Lawyer and addict. Neither held any illusions. Or delusions.

He hummed gently as he cleaned up. Pausing to refill Lido’s bowl and stare out at the garden. Late afternoon light shining over his garden. He seriously needed to start working on that. It was fine but didn’t have much life in it. Not right for a garden. Maybe next weekend he could take the kids to the local garden centre. Maybe even ask the Kings to join? He knew that Mel didn’t have any plants in her place... at least of the real variety but it felt like something they might both enjoy.

Any excuse.
