I feel like it’s important to note that they call him Amish here because earlier he got so mad during a hard boss fight that he went on a rant that “humans aren’t meant to do this, they’re meant to push logs in wheelbarrows”

ICE fucking abandoned the scene in a Minneapolis neighborhood and left their battle plans and designs on the city, fake license plates, and challenge tokens which they reward themselves for arrests. Looney Tunes shit.

“Demonstrators investigating the abandoned ICE vehicles apparently retrieved these “challenge coins” that ICE mercenaries receive when they kidnap people. This “coin” is decorated with a skull wearing a crown. ICE mercenaries serve king death.”

the. can i beat x game only using y youtube video format is always funny because its like. well im sure you can. its a vid eo game its a toy you play on your computer. can i beat hide and seek only hiding behind bushes? the answer may surprise you

The “can i beat x game only using y” format CAN be interesting but it’s held back by really bad interpretations of what x and y are supposed to be.

theres this challenge runner on youtube called ymfah who makes these kinds of videos, and he’s so good at them that it makes everyone else unwatchable.

His videos “can you beat dark souls / skyrim / elden ring” without walking are amazing because the requirement for beating the challenges the game throws at you without a mechanic as basic as walking (the videos are even more extreme: he literally disables his L3 thumbstick) turns all these games into incredibly mind-bending puzzles that require incredible amounts of game knowledge to overcome.

Another one of his videos, “can you beat bloodborne with guns only?” Flexes a similar compilation of extreme game knowledge, with the added twist of him turning what is supposed to be primarily a parrying tool into one of the strongest builds in the game. As soon as the build is proved to be able to beat the game, he drops the “is it even possible?” Act and changes the question to “how strong can we make this build?” And the answer is EXTREMELY.

This makes every other kind of video unwatchable because past a certain point every challenge run just becomes a no-hit run with checkpoints. The thing about the souls games in particular is that they can be beat without taking damage, so any run where you can consistently do damage is already possible.

So people who make videos like “can you beat DARK SOULS while at LEVEL ONE while taking TRIPLE DAMAGE with FIST ONLY” are really just asking “am i good enough at the game to fight bosses no-hit for 5 hours straight” and the answer is “depends on the person” but its not entertaining because those runs get reduced to kiting the boss while waiting for the one move with a guaranteed safe opening to attack.

It really shows a core misunderstanding of what makes souls games good, and what makes a youtube video interesting. Souls games are good because different kinds of builds change the dynamic dance that you have with enemies and bosses, and challenge run videos are interesting because they show you how a seemingly impossible challenge can be overcome with enough knowledge.

In conclusion, a good challenge run requires you to engage with the mechanics of a game far deeper than it was intended. A bad challenge run just tries to beat the game while only engaging with mechanics on as much of a surface level as possible.

i get recommended a number of pokemon “solo challenge” runs in this vein because i was dumb enough to click on a couple where it is all just can you beat this pokemon game only using x pokemon in battle. and the answer is just so trivially yes for every single one of them, the only point of comparison is basically what level they had to grind to to beat the elite four, and often they get churned out so haphazardly that they do not particularly route the game out well for that pokemon, do not have moves available at a later point in the run that they could, and often do just choose to grind instead of coming up with better strategies.

and it is tragic because there are interesting challenge runs that can be done in that series that demonstrate a mastery of the game’s systems. the only low/efficient turn count run i’ve seen was an april fools video but substantially more work clearly went into routing it than any of the typical solo challenge runs. i’d love to see more of those. but also what i like a lot are no pokecenter/any free healing (including wiping) runs. which are also plainly *possible* but require enough dedication to routing just for PP management that i think most attempts at them are going to be interesting to watch so long as the strategy is either novel or at least independently derived. and i really wish they were the norm because they are so much more interesting just for actually deeply engaging with the games and demonstrating knowledge of them as said
