- You wake up to an unnerving silence. You feel a mild headache. Looking around the room, nothing seems out of the ordinary, yet something seems to be missing. You reach for your alarm clock, and immediately it clicks together.
- “Huh… The batteries must’ve died out while I was asleep…”
- After getting out of bed, you search the house for some batteries, but either you’re a lot less awake than you thought, or you seriously have no spares.
- “And on a Sunday too… How am I gonna get up for-...”
- Tomorrow… What are you doing tomorrow anyways? Just thinking about it makes your head start to hurt. You must be dehydrated or something — better drink some water. And you might as well call your friend — Lance — to see if he’s got any batteries laying around. I mean, it’s a stretch but—
- “What? But why are you-- “ Your friend sounded rather shocked — quite unlike the fox you knew, who was usually charismatic — if a little snarky at times. Had something happened since you last spoke? Speaking of, you could barely remember what you had been doing yesterday — in fact, just thinking about it was starting to make your headache worse…
- “Oh- oh! Oh yeah! I think I have an idea what’s wrong. I’ll be over in a jiffy.”
- Indeed, it didn’t take him long before he arrived. He was perhaps a little too fast, but since your headache was only getting worse by the minute, you just wanted to get this over with. With one glance, it seemed like he knew exactly what was up — or well, you inferred that from the way his tail swayed around.
- “Ah! It’s not winded up properly! Lemme get you fixed up. It’ll juuust take a minute or two.”
- He tapped the back of the clock, and the panel fell off, revealing mechanical clockworks. For some reason, one had to expose the inner workings to wind up this alarm clock — talk about inconvenient… The moment he began to turn the key, he began to grin. The sound of the gears turning pierced through your body, and you felt a sudden, intense shiver. Instinctively, you reached out to stop the fox, but as he released the winding-key, your body froze.
