@peakbat

It is still wild to me that I legitimately have to research in a bikini in order to effectively collect data.

And the reason being is that people (of all genders equally) perceive me as a threat otherwise.

Like

Threat vs not a threat

People have said before that they are concerned I’m gonna get them in trouble, but I think the real reason folks get mean is that tourists effectively enter a liminal space when they go on vacations (especially American tourists on tropical vacations) and they don’t want anything to pull them out of that mindset.

So when I show up with a clipboard and wanting to talk while wearing an outfit that clearly says “I’m working, but not in any sort of position that exists in your vacation fantasy,” that pulls them out of the fantasy and they react negatively.

Meanwhile, if I’m dressed the same way everyone else is, even if I have a clipboard and want to talk about the same thing, I automatically become a wacky NPC who is part of the fantasy.

I no longer hear “It’s really weird that you’re just out here watching people” but instead “You get to lay on the beach all day and call it “work?” Hell yeah! Living the dream!”

Yes I study raccoons. The critically endangered pygmy raccoons like to live at beach clubs. My current study is looking at interactions between tourists and/or tourism industry staff and the raccoons.

Surely this is just environmental camouflage that let's you get closer to your subjects?

It's just as valid as when wildlife photographers cover themselves in netting with twigs and leaves attached or hide inside a fake rock right?

I love how we all glossed over the idea of a pygmy raccoon

Yeah, this is Mama, a full grown pygmy raccoon. They are a completely separate species than common raccoons. Their scientific name is Procyon pygmaeus and they are a critically endangered species. There are only around 120 left in the world and they are only found in the island of Cozumel in Mexico. I, tumblr user raccoonmilf and the creator of Dashcon, am the only United States citizen legally allowed to research them. I am currently studying how pygmy raccoons are impacted by direct human activity within the tourism industry.

For folks in the notes very upset that she only has two babies left: These baby possums are of dispersion size - they're big enough to leave mom and fend for themselves. These two are just the ones who haven't moved out yet.

Oh wow I had no idea they were so tiny when they left home! Our possums in Australia don't have as many babies so they're generally 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the mum when they get kicked out.

I would definitely assume a baby opossum was abandoned if I hadn't been told otherwise.

Every year wildlife rehabs are delivered many perfectly healthy baby possums for this exact reason and generally, it means they get a little boost of assured safety, food, and hydration before being released. Imagine, you're newly 18 and starting your adult life - you're just kind of walking around, maybe on your way to community college or something, and a Kindly Cosmic Horror picks you up, carries you to a fancy hotel where you are given several really excellent meals and maybe receive a series of vaccinations, then you are dropped into a resource-rich area approximately nearby where the first Kindly Cosmic Horror picked you up. This is how life is for young Virginia possums every spring.

Everything about this delights me.

I identify the most with the woman who has a green velvet ribbon around her neck and keeps being like "DONT untie my neck ribbon or something really bad will happen" and then her husband unties the ribbon and her head falls off. this is extremely real to me. spent my whole life like "please don't do this thing to me or really bad stuff will happen" and everyone around me being like "that sounds fake" and doing it anyway. and then my head fell off!

1. wow this went very popular very fast

2. many of you are correcting me, but the version of the story where she instructs her husband to untie the ribbon on her deathbed is just one version of the story, and you're probably only familiar with that one bc it's in scary stories to tell in the dark. there's other versions! many of which involve someone removing the ribbon against her will/while she is asleep/etc

3. you'll never guess whose head is actually falling off. I should have listened to my brain telling me that this was A Relevant Tale a lot sooner, I think

DON'T ASK YOURSELF "AM I A GOOD PERSON?" ASK YOURSELF "IS WHAT I AM DOING GOOD?" OR EVEN! "WHAT'S A GOOD THING I CAN DO RIGHT NOW?"

DON'T WORRY ABOUT JUDGING AND SORTING YOURSELF! JUST MAKE YOUR BEST CHOICES!!

Ok but pls actually do this people. There is no such thing as a good person. Stop trying to be one and starting trying to do good instead

in the contemporary world, the most fundamental human right - and, it often seems, the least protected one - is "being both Allowed and Able to go Somewhere Else." the rest is commentary.

the torments of prison are predicated on Not Letting You Leave. the most terrifying and degrading aspects of childhood are predicated on Not Letting You Leave. misogynists wail and moan and fearmonger about divorce and equal opportunity employment because they Allow Wife To Leave. borders and immigration restrictions exist, in no small part, to Prevent People From Leaving countries where they will be exploited and/or oppressed. fuck you for trying to leave. fuck you for exerting any control over your life whatsoever. that makes you the one at fault, actually.

david graeber described three fundamental freedoms: freedom to move, freedom to disobey orders, and freedom to reorganize social relations

Have you guys noticed how much the internet/technology just does not listen to you anymore? I click “don’t show this artist” on Spotify and I get recommended a music video by them on the front page. I click “skip this update” on a pop up every time I open a file organization app and it’s right back there every time. I click unsubscribe on a newsletter and it keeps showing up in my inbox!! I click “delete my account” and the next time I open the website they suggest I “reactivate”.

Was recently in a rental car that kept turning the Bluetooth on my phone back on after I had turned it off

why can rockstar games institutionalise you for life like nikita kruschev for being autistic

He didn't steal 10 million dollars. They made that number up as a loss, they never fucking had it. Rockstar has spent more than a billion fucking dollars on GTA VI and will likely make billions more when it gets released.

Uber is a fucking shell game of a company designed to leech investor capital and output bootleg cabs.

Nvidia posted a profit in 2023 of $4.37 billion. This is like someone stealing less than a penny from me.

And they lock this kid in a prison hospital for LIFE?

Capitalism is disgusting.

Nobody should buy GTA til they free Arion Kurtaj

he didn't even get to stand *trial*. because he's autistic. he's in an institution for life for hacking while autistic, without trial.

the floating head of wisdom

Please don't fall victim to internet misinformation. There is no floating head. It's a regular horse, it's neck is just hidden due to the position of the camera. I made an image to help you understand the what's actually going on.

Thank you for the clarification

The standoff with agents happened on Jan. 8, one day after an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Good in south Minneapolis. Wooten’s refusal to comply with ICE was captured on video and posted to Facebook.

The agents tried everything to intimidate the guard.

“You can’t come back here, bro,” Wooten can be heard in the video saying to an agent wearing a mask and sunglasses. “I’m talking to your manager,” the agent said. Wooten responded: “No, you’re talking to security, I’m in charge.”

ICE left empty-handed. Wooten said he just stood his ground, “10 toes down.”

“I was doing my job like I’m supposed to,’’ Wooten said. “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. I just want to make my family safe because I’ve been here three years.”
