I’m begging all my mutuals to pay attention to the wildfires in Argentinian Patagonia. Almost 10.000 acres of unique Patagonian Andean forests, with South America tallest and world’s oldest trees, burned and they were all intentional. The worst part is that back in December, the government announced that they would lift the ban on foreigners buying rural land, and on changing the land productive activity after a wildfire for 30-60 years. Firefighters are crying because they don’t have enough resources, the government cut their budget by 70% for this year, while they wasted 300 million dollars on F-16 jet fighters. It’s not just trees, it’s animals and people’s lives, whole towns, that have been endangered, more than 3000 tourists had to be evacuated. The climate catastrophe is worsening the fires, with less rain and more wind this summer.

In Gaza, residents wake up to find a yellow block in their neighbourhood. Once they see it, they grab what they can and flee, knowing their homes will be demolished and that they will never be able to return. whoever sees it from their window in Gaza becomes homeless!

You could be the reason that’s people can buy food and clean water to drink & heavy clothes in this cold weather.

‏The temperature is just 2°C, a number that might seem harmless, but in Gaza, it can be deadly. Families are sheltering in thin fabric tents, without heating, without warm clothes, and with barely enough blankets to keep out the cold. In these conditions, winter becomes not just a season, but a threat to survival.

Apparently ICE now has agents posing as utility workers to get into people's homes. The electric and gas companies have posted information on how to tell if it's one of their workers, and numbers to call to confirm whether they've sent someone to do utility work on your house.

Well modern camera equipment can almost see in the dark so what do you even need lighting for?

I’m not joking. Do you understand the ISO value system as it relates to film?

im not arguing that you cant film in the dark without special lighting (obviously you can), im saying you shouldnt. im arguing with the second half of your statement. the lighting in the first picture is very purposeful and enhances the horror of the film. they didnt get into the editing room and go “oh darn, we forgot to shine a light on the guy hiding in the shadows!” jaws was made scarier because you could rarely see the shark, so your brain invented the scariest possibility. you can just… see the whole man in the second picture. having a flat shot where the lighting doesnt even draw in the viewers eye to anything (much less obscure something thats supposed to give the movie tension and anticipation) looks fucking boring and adds nothing

Lighting in film, and especially horror is so *so* important to the tension in the scene, it’s a significant part of visual storytelling, and the cinematographer/DOP (director of photography) should’ve picked up on that.

It’s particularly embarrassing in comparison to the original material, as with digital/modern technology, you can literally see how the shot looks while you’re shooting.

This should’ve also been sorted in comp and fixed well before distribution.

As already pointed out, the lighting values have no depth to them, thus creating a very flat scene (this is one of the first design principles we are taught in design for animation/film- if I had handed in a lighting shot or concept anything like this, I would’ve failed the module).

If you take the shots and put them into greyscale, you can see this a lot clearer.

In the original Halloween shot, we can see a high range of value (how bright or dark something is)- the lighting is brightest on Jamie Lee Curtis, the viewer’s eye is drawn to her first- we can see her emotions clearly and gain sympathy for her character. Then we are drawn into the darkest value, creating dread, and this is fulfilled and heightened with the contrasting (and next highest) value of Michael’s mask.

In the modern shot, all the values are within a similar range (mid-greys), and there is no proper depth in value- making the tension within the shot fall flat (not ideal for horror).

In fact, the highest value in this shot is the fire in the background- which is where the eye is drawn to first. The background. Not the action. So instead of feeling empathy or dread, we are focusing on the wrong details.

And yes, while it could be said from a film analysis POV that the flatness of the shot ‘puts the characters on the same fighting ground/level of power in the shot,’ I’m not going to give them the benefit.

To top it off, the use of colour in the modern shot highlights the errors in lighting. Whilst sharing the blue/orange colour scheme of the original shot, everything is blue except the one area of contrast, the orange fire. So once again, we are drawn to none of the action and instead the background.

With a very small edit in compositing and lighting to match the original Halloween, the feeling (and focus) of the shot is completely changed. The shot has higher contrast and range of values- the focus is on Curtis, while Michael feels more foreboding in the darkness. The contrast puts the characters on opposite sides- good vs evil, telling a narrative in contrast to the unedited shot.

These effects could’ve easily been achieved by adding a key light on Curtis and rim lighting on Michael in production, and if necessary, editing value depth in comp to enhance the raw footage.

TLDR: Digital filmmakers still need to know traditional film and design theory- just because you have good actors, cameras and composition, does not mean you can forgo basic film craft. The aim of cinematography is to enhance the narrative, not restrict it.

My name is Ahlam, I am a Palestinian mother of five children as well as a wife and daughter. Until last October, I was living a regular, stable life with my husband, children, immediate family, and in-laws.

er 7th of October, my life turned upside down due to the war on Gaza. On the night of October the neighborhood we lived in Gaza – the neighborhood where my children grew up and where we started our family – was completely bombed.

Unfortunately, the bombing was severe, and snipers were targeting anyone attempting to leave their homes. A neighboring house was bombed, and our house was severely damaged. We were trapped inside, and my husband, children, and I were rescued from under the rubble and shattered glass. That night, my children and I witnessed unimaginable things From harsh things and scenes.

We moved to the south and now live in a tent without the most basic necessities of life, me, my children, my husband and my sick mother.

We have lost everything we own, and we cannot buy food or water or even educate my children now. Unfortunately, our lives have become very harsh after this unjust war against us.

Your support is our hope and our future for a new chance in life for my children. Thank you for being a part of restoring hope and stability in our lives.

This is not a symbol of hate. This is a child who has run out of words like our children here.

When a child in Gaza raises his middle finger, it isn’t rudeness or rebellion. It’s a breaking point. A hungry child, cold, living in a tent that cannot protect him from rain or fear. That gesture is the last thing left when there is no voice left in the chest.

People will argue about politics, but our children here don’t know them.

They know the cold that wakes them at night, the long wait for food, the faces that disappear and never return. This child is not an isolated case he is the image of every child here, carrying the same silent question in their eyes: why were we left alone?

If you are seeing this, don’t turn away.

Our children are not asking for pity they are asking for a chance to survive. A share, a reblog, or a small act of support could mean warmth, food, or one night without tears for a child here in Gaza.

Watching world militaries destroy civilians and feeling powerless is excruciating.

It makes you wish that there were SOMEONE who could stop it, SOMEONE with the power and the drive to do good. A superhero. Because what can regular old people like us with no government position or authority possibly do to help?

But remember that they WANT you to feel powerless. They want your heart so heavy that you can't bear the weight, they want you to be too depressed to do anything at all, they WANT you to believe there's nothing you can do. But they're wrong.

Donating to a campaign doesn't feel as dramatic an impact as being able to swoop in like a superhero and save someone from a burning building, but just because we don't see the impact of donations with our eyes doesn't mean it isn't saving lives.

Sharing their suffering means boosting their support. Sharing means remembering their pain. Sharing means we haven't taken our eyes off them. And we never will.
