pinnacleofnormalcy:

Hi everyone, I am an undergraduate student who is conducting a research project on Hannibal (TV) and Killing Eve. I want to explore how queer shows and their online fandoms use taboo topics such as violence, cannibalism, trauma, etc. as a metaphor for other taboo topics such as queer love, queer intimacy, etc. My hope is that by understanding how fans and shows use these topics as metaphors for sex and sexuality, it allows further insight on how people from online and queer communities have begun to understand how romance and sexuality should be shown in media in order for it to be deemed acceptable to the general public

I am looking for people who would be willing to let me interview them for my project. Interviews can be done on Tumblr through messages, everyone will remain anonymous for the project itself, and interviews can also be arranged through email, phone, or zoom depending on your comfort level. You must be 18+ in order to participate

There will be discussions on sensitive topics such as violence in relationships, relationships often seen as toxic, etc.

Hi everyone,

a small update for this project. I was in the middle of reaching to some of you about the interviews but as I was doing so, Tumblr flagged my account and thus removed my ability to see and respond to messages (they got rid of the messaging ability entirely). Luckily, I am still able to message on my other accounts. Because of this I am going to reach out to you from my other account, @thefeministlesbian (it is still me, pinky promise).

As I was trying to tell you all individually, I am still in the early stages of this project and I received more interest than anticipated. I can only interview a small number of people now, but I hope to interview more in the future. If you are still would like to participate knowing that I may not be able to interview the bulk of you until later, please let me know (I will be eternally grateful)

like im sorry but it is insane to me that i’ve seen so many people online be so incredibly negative about this show (the entire “main” sub on reddit for example is essentially a hate sub). bc like here is the thing. is it perfect no. did they make changes from the book of course. but this is a good faith adaptation of the heart of the series.

the characters, at their core, are there. the themes are there. the casting ranges from unexpectedly good (lin manuel, for all his notoriety for being corny, has been great) to downright pitch-perfect (walker has been, without a doubt, an incredible percy. his mannerisms are spot on, his delivery is thoroughly enjoyable and even sharper in the second season, and his smiles are like, exactly to-book-accurate depictions of what we’re shown within the series prose). there is obvious care put into this show on every level, from the producers to the writers to the crew, and you cannot say that about many shows these days, let alone a “let’s make some money” adaptation.

and we’re getting more! granted i have not read the books in years, and i openly admit that, but the spirit is still there and then some. they have already given grover and clarisse so much more depth and interesting characterization than the series, which is one of the pros of television that you can’t necessarily accomplish in a limited pov novel, so i’m so so glad they’re taking advantage of that. i can say at least thus far, they haven’t introduced a character from the original series so far that i haven’t liked equally and/or more in the show than in the books. and for a series that is so built on the lovable characters, i think that’s very important.

are they changing the plot, yes, but that’s the nature of an adaptation (and the natural passage of two decades occurring between source material and new show)! adjusting plot points, devices, and processes to fit a different medium is not a bad thing. it also keeps the show engaging and fresh for people who did read the books and know what happens, because in this fashion, you don’t entirely know what to expect. the general arcs are still there, but there are still exciting twists you may not anticipate. that’s a good thing. that is how you make a successful adaptation.

look, i’m not acting like i’m some authority on what the perfect pjo adaptation should or would be (like i defended the movies in 2010 bc they were fun and i loved logan lerman. i’m not saying i’m a god here). but this series is essentially giving us everything many folks have wanted since the 2000s – a heartfelt, ambitious, entertaining screen version of the books, with room to grow and already demonstrating so much of it. i’m having so much fun, and i’m so so grateful for that.

(and if all y'all whiners ruin that for us and get it cancelled before season 5 on gods you will feel my wrath through the multiverse. DON’T BLOW THIS FOR US.)

This is how Percy reacts to Ares’ threat. Up to this point, he’d actually been giving the god some pushback (in typical Percy fashion). But the second Ares’ tone changed, the second that he gets angry, leaning forward, forceful and red-faced, Percy’s demeanor changes. His eyes widen, eyebrows draw together, his mouth falls open before he intentionally presses it closed, and he looks away.

image
image

He’s completely avoiding eye contact.

image
image

When he does look back at Ares, he has this slightly disdainful look in his face. The way that one side of his face is kind of scrunched up.

image

You wanna know what Percy still doesn’t do? He doesn’t hold eye contact. He looks at Ares, sure, but for less than a second at a time. When he finally says they’ll do it, he’s looking away and his eyes very quickly move to Ares’ face before looking away so quickly that it’s easily missed, almost like he’s trying to see how Ares reacts to his “surrender.”

image
image

And what does Ares do? He backs off. Sits back in his chair and smiles like he didn’t just coerce a kid. And while he’s talking, after that, we see Percy briefly again and he’s the only one of the 3 not looking at Ares.

image

The sudden fear in Percy’s eyes at Ares’ tone and inflection? Lowering his gaze? Giving in despite clearly not wanting to and the moment of processing after the interaction is over?

Just because we didn’t see Gabe being overtly abusive onscreen, doesn’t mean the abuse isn’t still there in subtle ways.

This is why I can ignore the changes in the show from the books…

“A lot of the stuff we do, we do because of our parents. Whether we know it or not.

We’re our own people too.”

The Percy Jackson universe was literally created by a father who wanted to make his child’s life better. Easier. Funnier. Mostly, he wanted his kid to know that being different is not a bad thing. At its very core, Percy Jackson is a support system for growing teens. It gives perspective and validation to those reading it or watching it and this one quote is quite literally it.

Because yes, the show has an obviously noticeable amount of changes but it doesn’t really matter, does it? Everything that’s been changed so far has only added to it. The difference in Tyson’s portrayal and the glimpses into Clarisse’s decisions. It all matters. It matters a lot. And my teenage heart is very VERY happy that a decade long wait it paying off so beautifully well.
