[A Lonely Place of Dying- The New Titans #61]

One of Dick Grayson's enduring character traits through the years is Being Insane About Bruce Wayne.

13 yr old Tim: "I'm worried about Bruce"

Adult Man Dick: "GET IN LINE. BEHIND ME. WAY BEHIND."

You should pull those panels👀👀

Okay, this is going to get long and panel heavy. Here's Tim and Damian's relationship since Rebirth.

Your opening is Detective Comics #975 (James Tynion IV, 2018)

“Drake. You look terrible.” “I’ve missed you too, you little gremlin”

Their banter here is utterly on point. That’s two brothers, down to the nickname and the fact Tim can now read Damian’s meaning in his words (something he wasn’t great on in Reborn). There’s the way Tim reaches out to help Damian up and Damian trusts him to pull him up. There’s also the pacifying hand Tim has on Damian’s shoulder to calm him around Cass and stop him attempting to retaliate.

They understand each other so much better now.

Next up is Batman #76 (Tom King, 2019)

God I love this scene.

Tim and Damian standing on the edge of Gotham, where Bane’s banned any of them coming in on threat of killing Alfred.

Tim’s trying to talk Damian down from doing something foolish. Damian’s feeling so much here. They’re both sniping at each other. And then Tim breaks and cries.

“Since—since he came! Since he hurt us! Since he took our city and broke our father!”

And then they insult each other’s sore points, only for Damian to quietly say:

“I don’t know…what to do…I don’t…we have to do something, Timothy…what do we do?”

It’s our. It’s we. It’s brothers and their shared father. They’re reaching out to each other and savaging each other in their pain because they have nobody else right now who they can turn to who understands them so deeply. Dick’s Ric. Jason is sir not appearing in this storyline.

A lighter one is Nightwing #77 (Dan Jurgens, 2020)

Tim and Damian under the tree together, trying to work out what the Christmas presents are. I love these two sons of the Detective.

Then Damian goes and hangs on an island for 18 months away from Gotham and Tim has all of a handful of group scenes with Damian during that time, most of which are barely worth attempting to screencap in terms of demonstrating their dynamic. I suppose the closest to any characterisation we get is this panel from Robin #15 (Joshua Williamson, 2022)

(Hey Joshua Williamson, if you wanted to have any input on shaping Tim and Damian's modern relationship, you had two full ongoings over the course of 4 years where you could have had a scene with them together that actually bothers to develop that characterisation, rather than ducking it continually)

DC Pride 2023 "Hey, Stranger" (Nadia Shammas, 2023)

Damian just DUCKING clean up and sending Connor instead. But as much as Tim and Connor fondly grouse about Damian’s ways through this story - Damian was going to come, as much as he hates to, until Connor asked for some private time with Tim.

Plus Damian still shows up at the end when they haven’t got in in a reasonable amount of time to find out what went wrong (as he was worried).

Onto Gotham War and Batman #138 (Chip Zdarsky, 2023)

The Gotham War fight! Tim and Damian are on different sides of the view of what’s wrong with Bruce. And yet, Tim’s so careful and caring with Damian as Damian figures out Bruce is not coming for him.

“…We’ll help our dad. We will.”

This of course backs up into Batman #148 (Chip Zdarsky, 2024)

Tim rescuing Damian from ZEA-clone Bruce, and then Damian rescuing Tim back. And again: Tim teasing Damian, Damian snipping back, Tim acknowledging the snip is Damian being fond.

“…hopefully with everyone’s favourite bratty little brother. I’m sure you’re dying to say ‘thank you’, so…have at it.” “Hn! You idiot! He’s—”

and

“Two Robins against one—you never stood a chance.” “I didn’t need saving, Drake. I had a plan I was working on.” “I’m sure you did. Like father, like son.”

You can see the progress here. The play back and forth. The rhythm of their relationship that’s evolved.

Another just cute Tim and Damian scene is Nightwing #113 (Tom Taylor, 2024)

Look at Tim and Damian playing Good Robin and Bad Robin for Dick during a fight. Leaning completely into the roles and bouncing off each other.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold #18-19 "Robin Season" (Brendan Hay, 2024)

So one reason I would encourage people to read Robin Season is that it's very blatant in terms of drawing all the parallels and echoes between Tim and Damian out into the open. It's sort of a mini version of the journey their relationship has taken since Batman: Reborn.

You see the way they rub up against each other, you see how alike they can be, and you see the respect they've evolved for the other's methods.

Is it hokey? Sure. But it's also not wrong about the general shape of Tim and Damian's brotherhood.

Back that up with Hay's second effort, DC's Lex and the City "To Live and Date in Gotham" (Brendan Hay, 2025)

This one is is a lot lighter in terms of Tim and Damian's relationship - it's more the cuddly friendship sequel to the last story.

Damian's sneaking into Tim's boat to ask him advice! Because he thinks Tim's the subject matter expert to reach out to! Tim genuinely does his best to help Damian work out how to put a date together!

And it still has the verbal back and forth between Tim and Damian.

"You do know dating, Drake. I now understand how you duped so many attractive people—” "I'll rephrase that in my head to be a compliment." "And you were right about Gotham. Thank you...Tim."

Like this even plays with the way Damian uses names to indicate his emotional distance from various characters. You'll note that they stretch the gamut, but move from Drake to Timothy to Tim, depending on how Damian's feeling towards Tim in that scene.

I know I've been referencing stories set in the present, but I can't leave out the flashback in Batman #2 (Matt Fraction, 2025).

Do we know exactly where in the timeline this is supposed to fit? Well no, not really, but if we guess it's somewhere between about Resurrection and 'the nebulous replacement period post Flashpoint pre Batman Eternal that Tim now has', we're probably not too far off. It's definitely early days for Damian being at Wayne Manor, and quite possibly when he was still only visiting occasionally.

Tim and Damian's behaviour is rather more vindictive towards each other here than a lot of the above examples (because as said, set in an earlier period). But again it also looks extremely brotherly. Bruce is mediating what's going on and seems pretty chill and unbothered about how they're acting towards each other, suggesting this is pretty normal and accepted in this time.

The thing is, when you look at all of this in aggregate together: the trends really pop out, and the way Tim and Damian relate to each other, and it's a brotherhood now with a lot of give and take, that looks pretty similar whoever is writing it.

Pretty developed! Doesn't look like it did in Batman: Reborn! (Though I'd also argue Tim and Damian's relationship by the end of Reborn looks significantly better than people want to attribute it to look, if you take the latest chronological appearances together, with things like Teen Titans and Gates of Gotham)

Batman: poison ivy, Harley Quinn, the riddler, black spider, ragdoll, even catwoman, all of our foes seem to gather in this one location, they must be planning something

Robin:

Robin: Bruce that’s a gay bar

gosh it's such a mixed feelings when you see a fan art that has multiple characters in it, and you just freaking love the way one of the characters are drawn, but just something about the way some of the others are just absolutely makes ya not want to do it

like by golly, the talent, the skill, the artistry, fantastic

but there's just that image of the character that is so very much them, that when not represented no longer feels like them. and then it's like reblogging someones OC. and that feels strange to do

the near irreparable damage edgifying batman has done to his characterization and how he treats his kids. tim did not get beat by that man 😭 bruce called him champ and let that boy yap to him about video games. tim was out there eating sandwiches while doing homework in the manor and playing RPGs on the fuckin BATCOMPUTER.

Do we think in Fraction's run he's trying to being back Tim's conflict with his parents and how he felt guilty lying to them and leading a double life, but with Bernard? I just thought of this, I'm sure other people have already discussed this.

if they did this i would love it, because timmy could really use that kind of drama back
