“Look, no one taught you anything and that’s not your fault. You’re trying your best. But if you don’t pull it together, everyone’s gonna leave you.”

“She never really talks to anyone but the cats. Boss doesn’t mind. Says ‘a stray is a stray’.”

Fionna literally had no one to teach her how to be a functional human being, and has been through so much shit she doesn’t know how to process. She hates herself and thinks she only has worth when she’s useful to others as a “hero”, and when she can’t do that she crashes out.

(Also I think she has undiagnosed ADD that makes her life even more difficult, but that’s another post for another time.)

grief is so crazy like what if i forget what her laugh sounds like. does she know i loved her. i miss her so much. i catch myself doing things she used to do. i wish i could call her. i miss her so much. i do a crossword puzzle. i cry while washing the dishes. does she know i loved her? my heart feels like a hummingbird. i miss her so much. what if i forget what her laugh sounds like. what if i forget.

i talked ab this feeling in therapy yday and my therapist asked me, “would it really be so bad if your memories changed? if they softened and faded or looked different over time? why does that frighten you so much?” and i said, “i don’t want the love to disappear.” and she looked at me for a long moment and then she said, “it won’t. it doesn’t work that way. even if the memories soften or change, it doesn’t mean the love does. that love keeps going backward in time, forever, because you love her still. all is not lost.” i just thought i would share that in case it resonated w anyone else too.

Congress is now considering the appropriations bill for the Department of Homeland Security, whose funding runs out at the end of January. Call your members of Congress and tell them to vote NO on any bill that increases ICE's funding. Please demand that the DHS appropriations bill prohibit ICE and Border Patrol agents from carrying guns and that it unambiguously declare that agents do not have absolute immunity under the law if they harm civilians. Also tell them that any bill must restrict ICE and Border Patrol’s ability to conduct dragnet arrest operations and target people based on their race, language or accent. And the bill must clarify that ICE agents are liable under civil and criminal law if they harm civilians. Do this as soon as you can. To reach your representative or senator, call the U.S. Congressional Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Tell them the state and city where you live. They will connect you to any member’s office.

You know technology literacy is dying because I saw this meme with 76k likes

F11 the full screen button? You’re scared of the full screen button? F10?? It opens the menu bar???

Computers are so scary what if I accidentally hit F12 in a steam game and it takes a screenshot. What if I press shift + F12 while in word and accidentally save my document 😖

If you had to learn what the F keys on your computer do through me reblogging this post, then I'm glad you did. Computer literacy is not a skill that gets taught anymore, and it is absolutely one that needs to be taught in order to be learned. Don't ever feel bad for not knowing something, but ☝️ don't ever stop learning learning about your environment, the tools you use, and especially the people around you

Never stop learning+ Never stop sharing what you learned

Can't get over how The Boy and the Heron is haunted by napalm. Of course in the way that it haunts Mahito's trauma and dreams, but also in the fantastical imagery. The vision of his mother melting into a pool of liquid, the story of the fiery rock that dried up an entire lake upon contact, Himi entirely. The fact that the fantastical world, far from the touch of war, has an abundance of water.

References to graphic violence ahead. Firebombing wrecked Tokyo. The firebombing attacks, iirc, actually killed more civilians than the atomic bombs did. There are anecdotes from survivors about crowds of people running and trampling each other to try to escape the napalm. About people running to local swimming pools just to try to douse out the fires or escape only to find that the water of the pools completely dried up because of the heat. Of people bursting into flames in the middle of running. Of people's organs/bodies, quite frankly, melting into liquid. An account of a survivor's mother, for years after the war, pouring cups of water over her deceased daughter's grave and saying "little one, you must have been so hot."

It's subtle and I am not even sure that it was intentional, or if this was on Miyazaki's mind as he directed the art, but I can't shake off the echoes of history when I watched it.

I love animation history and one of the things that always baffled me was how did animators draw the cars in 101 Dalmatians before the advent of computer graphics?

Any rigid solid object is extremely challenging for 2D artists to animate because if one stray line isn’t kept perfectly in check, the object will seem to wobble and shift unnaturally.

Even as early as the mid 80’s Disney was using a technique where they would animate a 3D object and then apply a 2D filter to it. This practice could be applied to any solid object a character interacts with: from lanterns a character is holding, to a book (like in Atlantis), or in the most extreme cases Cybernetic parts (like in Treasure Planet).

But 101 Dalmatians was made WAY before the advent of this technology. So how did they do the Cruella car chase sequence at the end of the film?

The answer is so simple I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me sooner:

They just BUILT the models and painted them white with black outlines 🤣

That was the trick. They’re not actually 2D animated, they’re stop motion. They were physical models painted white and filmed on a white background. The black outlines become the lineart lines and they just xeroxed the frame onto an animation cel and painted it like any other 2D animated frame.

That’s how they did it! Isn’t that amazing? It’s such a simple low tech solution but it looks so cool in the final product.

Saying we should kill people who are trying to kill us shouldn’t be all that radical. I think it’s just common sense

the average person with bad taste can be into some extremely banal garbage but when you get close enough to someone with otherwise good taste that they start a recommendation by going off on a preamble about how they don't necessarily recommend it you know you're seconds away from hearing about some real torturously wretched dogshit

friend from work will have you watch a two hour movie where you can feel every second as it passes by, but enemployed movie mutual will put you on the kind of shit that feels like crawling on cobblestone until emaciated

people are reading this as the latter friend recommending dry, pretentious cinema. that's not the case. not that kind of situation. you're getting no enrichment out of this. I need you to understand they're making you watch Gooby because "it's kinda good"

Not to insert myself here but as someone who owns Ghost Rider 1 and 2 on DVD I do actually need everyone to watch it right now because in the second one a kid asks Nick Cage as Ghost Rider how he pees and Nick Cage says “it’s like a flamethrower” and then they hard cut to a CGI skeleton in full black moto leather pissing a jet of fire and then it does a shoulder check at the camera and nods like “hell yeah brother”

Fully derailing this post because I found a gif
