heya! i’m charlie! she/her :]

i’m here to talk about what it’s like to work at a pokemon shelter, share my studies in pokemon behavior, and help provide education for people who want to give their pokemon the best care they can. feel free to send me any questions you have!

here’s a current list of my pokemon:

hocus: male pidove. standard blue coloration. pair bonded to pocus.

pocus: male pidove. blue check. pair bonded to hocus.

presto!: female pidove. blue t-check. the boss of the pidove polycule. former gym mon.

spicy mayo: female umbreon. leucistic. fully deaf and wears a special vibrating collar- not a shock collar!

hueli: female tarountula. hangs out in my backyard enclosure with the pidove. she has two little white spots over her right eye that make her stand out.

amadeus: male swablu. adopted from a dragon clan i work with. has a history of behavioral issues but has settled in well with my flock and is making great progress!

plus a rotating crew of foster and rehab pokemon!

previously owned pokemon:

remus (now called RM-24423): roaring moon. obtained as a rehab after escaping from the great crater and kept for research purposes. released back into the great crater on november 19th, 2023. if you’re interested in reading what caring for it was like, i talk about that experience here.

voilà: female rowlet. she was a gift from a family member and has hisuian genes. transferred to the naranja-uva research aviary in cortondo on december 10th, 2023. she is now a hisuian decidueye.

iris: senior male archeops. previously a flight show pokemon at an aviary and adopted following his retirement. passed away june 1st, 2024

//OOC: just a quick note on how this blog is run: i treat pokemon very much like animals! this blog is focused entirely on the games rather than the anime and does not treat instances of sapient pokemon as real. things may get a little gritty as i do talk about things like euthanasia, animal death, and animal medicine. i will do my best to tag mentions of death, but ultimately it’s something i can’t guarantee.

i also won’t tag for specific kinds of animals such as spiders or snakes. i understand if having a phobia for those animals means that you can’t follow me, but i have personal reasons for not tagging things that way. thanks for your understanding in that regard.

this is primarily an ask blog, not a roleplay blog! i also tag each ask with the pokemon and themes that are involved in it. repeat asks and roleplay asks will get deleted.

here’s an faq you can consult before asking charlie about something!

commissions are currently OPEN! dm me here if interested :]

and if enjoy my blog and would like to give me a tip, you can find my ko-fi here

Hi, just curious!

If a crocalor, lets say, lost its egg, what would it do? Not real reason for asking! Just wanted to know! Could I replace it with a normal egg? Would it react?

it would be hard for a crocalor to really “lose” the egg, since it’s actually just an egg-shaped fireball that results from all the energy that pours out the top of its head. it’s not until a crocalor evolves into skeledirge that the fireball is able to move independently of it. the fireball can go out, but that usually only happens if the crocalor is extremely sick. if the fireball were to get dislodged, it would dissipate before long.

putting anything onto crocalor’s head will probably just result in it catching on fire. i don’t really recommend putting an actual egg there, because if the crocalor shakes its head, it’s going to fling hot egg at you.

Hi, I've got a small school of Feebas and noticed something odd about one of them. This one lil guy has always been particularly majestic, but his crest dorsal fin is getting absurdly long. Like a ponytail kinda, very pretty!

Could it be a sign of getting ready to evolve, or is he just Particularly Fabulous? I don't battle with these pretties at all so didn't even THINK evolution was on the table... How would you even give a fish an everstone if it is the case??

it does sound like he might be getting ready to evolve! feebas evolve when their body condition is particularly high, resulting in a much less “ragged” appearance. you can always check with your vet to make sure.

as far as keeping fish unevolved, it’s usually recommended to line the bottom of their tank or pond with everstone gravel, making sure to include a few full-sized everstones throughout. there are some great guides on setting up everstones in aquatic enclosures on hobby aquarist forums!

I heard that Pelipper carry their eggs in their mouths. Is that true? Do they ever accidentally swallow them?!

so this is a common misconception based on the pokedex having kind of confusing wording. pelipper dont carry their own eggs around; they’re typically ground-nesting pokemon, and the females spend most of the time incubating while males bring back food. they do, however, carry their young around once they’ve hatched! when their young are getting ready to fledge, the parents will carry them out to sea in their bills so they can learn how to skim the water for food and ride on sea thermals.

the pokedex entry is based off of pelipper’s natural behavior of allowing small pokemon to hitch rides in their mouths. when they roost, pelipper let their bills hang open. some land-dwelling pokemon will climb in to get carried to new land, and sometimes they’ll take their eggs with them! pokemon that live on islands in particular are known to do this more frequently. the pelipper don’t seem to mind. so, it turns out pelipper mouth IS a place for baby.

marine rangers will often have pelipper as their partner pokemon, because they can put an injured wild pokemon in the pelipper’s bill and have the pelipper take it to safety.

Two questions:

1 - Does dropping stuff on Crocalor’s fire egg hurt it? Or would it be our equivalent of getting warm food dropped on your face?

2 - How feasible is cooking food on a pokemon-sourced flame (like a Charmander tail), or is this one of those “you should never ever EVER” things?

nah, it doesn’t hurt them or even really bother them unless it’s something that won’t burn off. some crocalor might get annoyed, but it’s not painful.

generally, cooking on a pokemon’s flame is as safe as cooking on a campfire. it’s just not very convenient or feasible to try and make them sit still for long enough to cook. you’re better off having them help you start a fire in an appropriate fire pit and then cook on that.

Why do Glameow gain a bunch of weight when they evolve? Or are Purugly not even that heavy?

they’re pretty heavy! they’re a little less than 45 kg on average, which is significantly heavier than glameow. and a lot of it is muscle! they’re beefier than they look. all of that extra mass helps them bully other pokemon away from food and dens.

this is why it takes glameow a while to evolve. only the most aggressive, pushiest purugly are going to be able to secure enough resources to support their needs at that new size. the ones that don’t spend as much time duking it out for food will stay unevolved, allowing them to survive on less!

had to tell a bunch of students to stop using a crocalor to roast marshmallows on the battle court and track because they kept dropping marshmallows on his egg. this is my life now ig

Are Flittle ruffles like feathers? Is there a bird under there? My friend has a Chatot pair passed down from his parents, and he insists Flittle isn't a bird. What are your thoughts as an ornithologist or generally someone that works and lives with several bird Pokémon?

yes, flittle are birds. i’m not really sure why your friend is so insistent that they aren’t. feathers do a pretty good job of hiding the actual shape of a bird’s body, especially in flittle’s case, where their feathers poof out constantly because of all the psychic energy produced by the glands at their base. if you were to hold a plucked flittle, it would look similar what a hoothoot looks like under all those feathers.

flittle’s feathers have such an interesting shape because they don’t use their feathers to fly. instead, they hover with the help of their psychic type energy. their frilled shape does a better job of holding and directing this energy without risking damage to the structure of the feather, and it gives them better control of how much energy they release at once. this way they can gentle roll their frills to keep themselves hovering in the air instead of lifting their feathers all at once and blasting off at mach-5.

I accidentally took a bite of an applin's apple :( will he be ok??

it’ll just find a new apple to jump into. the apple itself is not part of applin’s body, so the bite didn’t hurt it. they just don’t like to have apples with a lot ot external damage, because that means the apple will rot faster. the enzymes they secrete to keep their apple fresh only work so long!

speaking of enzymes. can’t imagine what tasting that apple would be like. i’ve heard that apple from applin can be super tasty when cooked down because it helps keep the apple fresh, but that eaten raw it tastes really sour.

Has there ever been a shiny paradox pokemon spotted with the crater cams?

yes, we have spotted one on RM’s collar cam! it’s possibly the worst, most exciting pic we’ve gotten since the time we picked up the paradox beasts and swords of justice.

image

but it was still very exciting because it shows us yet another aspect of pokemon biology that paradox pokemon also have. it’s given us something new to look forward to searching for with the cams, so we made a big deal about it haha. even if the team did spend a lot of time emailing each other about how moldy we thought it looked.
