we should globally ban the introduction of more powerful computer hardware for 10-20 years, not as an AI safety thing (though we could frame it as that), but to force programmers to optimize their shit better

I reblogged this like 9 times kinda jokingly, but software should be able to run on older and less powerful hardware, and consume less power on newer hardware. Like, this is a real problem imo

I completely agree with this but I do need you to understand that the image above is 32 times the size of the lunar mission’s memory

Aliens: Wow you guys sure are completely normal and not at all indescribably horny.

NASA *beating the alien fuckers with a broom*: Yep. Just a completely normal species. no inappropriate lusting for extraterrestrial booty here, no sir.

I couldn’t let this be hidden in the replies

As an asexual, I vibe with NASA on this one. It’s… a metaphor.

I don’t. Let them out

A tiny, starry goat figurine! I love the combination of blue and yellow together.

GOD the ending of the martian (the movie) makes me so fucking mad compared to the ending of the martian (the book)

the martian the movie: i am the professor of badassery. you yourself can be badass too if only you learn to be completely self-reliant and say fuck you to everything

the martian the book: i am on a ship home. i am on a ship home because the entire world cared about me when by all rights i should have been a lost cause. long-standing borders were ERASED so teams of people who had never met could do EVERYTHING possible to save one solitary member of their species instead of leaving me to die where i should have been unreachable. it wasnt even anybody’s fault that i got stuck. they had every excuse to abandon me. instead, BECAUSE WE ARE A COMMUNITY…. maybe we do really deserve to be here among the stars

I’m still mad about how that movie fucking eviscerated Commander Lewis

i will never shut up about how that movie does not understand what a leadership role is, and how it does not value leadership or understand how a spacecraft works. Which is a shame because Apollo 13, one of my all time favourite films, does. How did they fail so bad at reading comprehension of the one work that definitely majorly influenced the martian. How did they fail at reading comprehension so bad with their own source material?

Oh wait I know they don’t think leadership roles are real work or admirable! Someone is only a heroic figure if they do everything themselves, not if they support the specialists of their team and let everyone do their jobs and keep a clear head.

Okay. Okay. Great book. Shame they never made a movie.

The three tiers of queer sff:

Broke: what is worldbuilding? Made in a lab to be as blandly inoffensive as possible. Time to randomly namedrope terms like ‘nonbinary’ and 'ace’ while doing zero work actually incorporating them into the world or characters and have someone give a speech about how valid they are. Lines like 'I’m too ace for this’ while never exploring the concept of asexuality or aromanticism and still having very central romance plotlines is common. I hate it here learn how to write realistic dialogue and fully realized characters I’m begging.

Woke: more ore less typical sci-fi and fantasy but It’s Queer Now. Might include in-universe queerphobia to be struggled against or may have queer identities be fully normalized. Can be done bad or well depending on the skill of the writer. A good way to explore our contemporary ideas of gender and sexuality or to have a bit of a power fantasy with lesbian princesses and trans knights. There will probably be a bisexual love triangle.

Bespoke: what is a gender. What is monogamy. What is polyamory. What is romance. What is platonic. Time to show you the most fucked up uncategorizable relationship you’ve ever seen. There may be weird ass metaphorical sex

fuck it

Book recs: tier three queer sff

AKA books that tackle gender, sexuality and relationships in ways that come off as deeply alien and non normative to our present day culture, frequently featuring actual aliens.
