(emerges 3 hours later covered in blood) i figured out what emotion i was feeling
i keep seeing that post about how frustrating the buff guy -> petite girl type genderbending is, and i wanted to add my two cents regarding the addition of ‘just swap pronouns and don’t change the design’ approach because i think these are two sides of the same coin, as they both fail to really delve into what i think is the most interesting aspect of this design exercise.
the reason i find genderbending to be such a fun and interesting challenge is because, if you actually want to be good at it and put thought into it, you have to really consider the character’s canon gender expression and think about what it means to them and how it reflects in their outward appearance and presentation.
is this male character buff because he likes to work out / be strong, or does he aspire to achieve conventional heteronormative male beauty?
is this female character a tomboy because she likes to express herself in a more masculine way, or is she doing it to fight gender norms?
the answers to those questions should produce very different designs!
this website loves to say that gender is a spectrum, but sometimes i genuinely wonder if people actually understand what that means.
gender expression, much like gender, is also a spectrum, which is why keeping the character exactly the same won’t always work, in the same way that just making the character conventionally attractive won’t always work. but sometimes, a buff dude would actually just be a hot girl. lady bane, however, would 100% look exactly the same.
Just image that if s4 did come out and there would be an intimate scene between Hannibal and Will it would likely be done in Bryan Fullers vague erotic scene style and it would probably be something like this:
It starts with their eyes, open and intense, then there's the gleam of a silver buckle and fabric that falls over a scarred shoulder. We follow a close-up shot of Will's hand as it moves over the base of Hannibal's neck (very close up and warm toned, you can see all the texture of their skin) and then moves up to twist into his hair. There's a shot of the bedsheets rippling, moving like the waves of the sea would. In the back, there's abstract music and a very faint panting, just enough to hear how desperate they are. Maybe a scream somewhere far away. A hand traces the curve of a spine, then grips and digs its nails into the skin. A short montage of a swarm of insects bursting lose along with the sound of swarming flies and a moan. The movement of the camera mirrors a slow, deep rhythm. Back to the hand, blood is drawn from the shoulder blades when the nails dig in too hard. A wipe of crimson red over sweat-stained skin, which fades into Will's lips as they fall open. A shot of his throat, head thrown back, mouth agape. A separate shot of Hannibal's eyes, staring at Will, then one of Will opening his. More blood, flowers burst open in a flash cut, we hear Hannibal sigh. We see skin rubbing on skin but the shot is such a close up that it's hard to determine what body parts we're looking at. The stag (man) comes by in a vague flash, like a memory or a distant vision. The hand balls into a fist on a back full of scratches, fingers stained completely red. The screen fades white and the ocean washes everything over...
