I originally started this when I was making blender studies of pulp covers, but never finished it. Found it in a WIP folder while cleaning up old files
I picked the covers based on image quality, but this story is really good, Leigh Brackett was a great writer (and one of the main inspirations for star wars). Her writing has become oddly hard to find in a collection, (and some of the older collections have poor edits of the stories), but the original magazine version can be read on the internet archive
hi, something on the back of my mind bothering me cause google isnt helping me find it, i think years ago at this point you were talking about a movie about a pirate captain who only pretends to kill people or something?
like to his crew and the rest of the world he's a fearless cutthroat killer but when the crew kidnaps some woman the captain reveals to her in private that he's been using a bunch of theater tricks and misdirection to make it look like he's killing them while actually letting them escape.
do you remember what this movie is or am I just totally misremembering or making something up?
that’s captain shakespeare from stardust! probably my favorite fantasy adventure movie. unfortunate association with neil gaiman now But the movie is so completely unlike the book he wrote to the point that this character is functionally not even in it and the tone is totally different. so i don’t think i gotta feel too guilty about it. highly recommend, very fun. it’s not about this guy but the whole movie’s good and he’s a major character.

there’s ALSO a m/m novella i wrote inspired by that guy (and featuring the dude in this animatic), and was in fact the first one i ever wrote under my big boy grown up books name. so it too is very old but i’m still fond of it if you’re just. chomping at the bit for content featuring pirate captains who’re faking their ruthlessness for fun and profit.

So I follow N. D. Stevenson (comics writer and animator, most famous for Nimona and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) and his husband Lee Ostertag (also a comics writer and animator) on Instagram. When I started following them, they were both publicly presenting as women, and then a few years ago N. D. came out as transmasc nonbinary, and then earlier this year Lee also came out as transmasc. Anyway this is all setup to say that Lee had the chance to make the funniest post of all time and he took it:
