She asks Mel how she's doing when she notices she's really distracted, retracts her joke and redirects the conversation back to Mel's wellbeing when she starts to go off on a tangent, asks leading questions to see if that works best (knows to ask about Becca!) and tries– in her own inefficient way– to reassure her about what's troubling her.

the most annoying people are people who don't understand storytelling. they be like "oooo how convenient that this thing happened to the main character in the very beginning". yeah no shit. that's why the story begins here
