So You Don’t Wanna Write a Novel? Other Ways to Keep Your Pen Sharp. ✏️

You don’t need to churn out a 400-page tome to keep your writer’s blood pumping.

A novel is just one flavor of the craft, and it’s not the only way to stay sharp. If you want to flex the muscles without committing to a marathon, here are some other forms of writing that count.

✏️ Bite-Sized Storytelling
Flash Fiction / Microfiction: 100–1,000 words, sharp as a knife. Good for testing voice, pacing, and imagery.
Short Stories: Anywhere from 2–10k. Think “contained explosions”—you can experiment without getting chained to a plot arc that drags on for months.
Drabbles: Exactly 100 words. Brutal little exercises in cutting the fat.

✏️ Character & World Experiments
Vignettes: Scene snapshots, character moments, atmosphere. They don’t have to resolve—just capture a mood.
Character Monologues: Stream-of-consciousness or diary-style rants. Great for digging into voice and psychology.
Worldbuilding Articles: Pretend you’re writing encyclopedia entries, news reports, or travel brochures about your own universe.

✏️ Hybrid & Playful Forms
Scripts / Screenplay Scenes: Dialogue-heavy, visual, and fast. You don't need to novelize, simply capture the beats.
Epistolary Pieces: Letters, emails, text exchanges between characters. Easy to draft, addictive to read.
Prose Poems: It's not poetry or prose. Just dense, image-heavy writing that teaches you rhythm and language control.

✏️ Practical Writer Fuel
Blog-Style Essays: On craft, on characters, on tropes you love/hate. Keeps your voice sharp.
Fanfiction: Built-in audience, lower stakes, instant feedback. Great playground for experimenting.
Writing Prompts / Exercises: Pick a random constraint (only one POV, no dialogue, set in one room) and push yourself.

🗝️ The Key
Writing is writing. Doesn’t matter if it’s a 100-word drabble, a fake news clipping, or a scene where your OC argues with a bartender—if you’re putting words on the page, you’re training.

TF2 FANCLASS / OC ASK GAME

🎩 - What kind of cosmetics would your OC have, if they were in game?

🔫 - What kind of upgrades would they have?

🩹 - What is their base HP? What is their base speed?

🎼 - What would their theme sound like?

📽 -What would their "meet the team" video look like? Would it be an interview, or a narrative?

🪗 - What taunts would they have?

👔 - If they absolutely HAD to be one of the 9 classes from the game, which would they be?

📰 - They're in the news! For what?

📸 - Someone finds a photo they don't want getting out. What is it of?

🍞 - What is the bread associated with them that spawns from the teleporter?

🚔 -They've been arrested! What for?

🚀 - You have to put them in any game other than TF2. what game do you put them in?

🕒 - What time do they wake up / go to bed?

🌙 - It's halloween! What kind of bird / monster are they?

🫂 - Who/Which characters are they close with?

puppydolldelirium

somehow only found this yesterday. still gonna answer these because I seriously need to yap about Butcher.

🎩 - Likely a few that relate somewhat to being a vagabond or chef, like work uniforms or decorative aprons, as well as a few that relate to Monty Python skits.

🔫 - Movement speed and the amount of health that his secondary replenishes.

🩹 - His base speed is 95%, and his base health is 245.

🎼 - Mainly a simple tune played on bass guitar and ukulele, something with a melody similar to Always Look on the Bright Side of Life from Life of Brian.

📽 - His video would likely be a few cut-together clips of him cooking and rambling about his work in the kitchen. Maybe a few things about work on the battlefield, though if there was any, it would be very blunt and short comments.

🪗 - His kill taunts would mostly use any melee with a blade, stabbing into an enemy merc at either the navel or sternum and slicing through to the other end, commenting that it would be less work later on. The only ability taunt he might use is either taking a sip from his canteen of water and speeding himself up or healing, at most, five or ten health.

👔 - Heavy, due to their similarities in both character and gameplay. Both have a generally large build and health pool, two-handed melee, and food as a secondary. Alongside that, they’re both generally quiet men, and enjoy a good sandvich and book.

📰 - Buying an amount of food that you’d only ever expect out of a character in a math story problem.

📸 - Any revealing uniform he had to wear. He’s worked in a lot of bars, and a few of them were in clubs.

🍞 - Sourdough. It goes well with soups and stews, which are his favorite recipes to make.

🚔 - Either refusal to return or outright stealing books from Teufort’s library a week or two before the annual book burning.

🚀 - Animal Crossing or Chrono Trigger, both as a shopkeeper.

🕒 - He wakes up an hour or so before work starts to make breakfast and wash up. He goes to bed late in the night, and spends time after dinner hauling carcasses around to compost or carve, as well as tending to the little greenhouse he keeps in the corner of his barrack, and reading.

🌙 - During Scream Fortress, Butcher would likely have a buzzard bird-head. Alternatively, he would be a strandwolf (brown hyena) or mantis shrimp.

🫂 - He is closest with Heavy, Demo, and Pyro. However, all of the mercs are like family to him, and he likely wouldn’t want to outright admit that he has favorites.
He gets along best with Pyro, and enjoys hanging out with the firebug, especially when it means that he gets to read to them or cook with them.
He also gets along well with Heavy. They can often sit in a comfortable silence together, and they both enjoy making food. Sometimes they make sandviches together for missions. They also occasionally recommend each other books that they enjoyed.
He mostly gets along with Demo on account of the drunkard being easy to talk to, an interesting person overall, and not nearly as touch-avoidant as the other mercs. He enjoys listening to the scot’s drunken rambled, and when they drink together, they often wind up sprawled out together on the floor or couch.
