something i’ve been thinking about after seeing wicked: for good is what would have happened after “wonderful” if elphaba never found the locked up animals? they made it seem like it was such an easy fix, that elphaba would just be accepted after however many years of being villainized by these people. like, you expect me to believe the wizard would just show up with elphaba and say “oh we’re good now?” and that would be that? no. it would have been played in the wizard’s favor, because that’s the crux of every decision he’s made.

something different from the musical in the film — at the end of the song, the wizard tells elphaba that with her by his side the people “don’t need an enemy” referring to the animals. but in act one, he says nothing unites people better than a common enemy. he’s not contradicting himself; there will still be an enemy. it’s still her. there’s absolutely no way elphaba’s “rehabilitation” into oz would be played as anything but the wizard “taming” her with his “power”. he tells elphaba that if he tells oz the truth that he has no power, they just won’t believe him. and even if they would, he will never do that.

and the addition of glinda in the song just furthers the point that when you stand by the wizard, you really have no voice. everything glinda is in act two is by the wizard’s design. she knows the same things elphaba does, but she doesn’t say it because, like the people of oz, she doesn’t want to believe it. glinda has no authority, whether she is aware of that or not. she sees this as an easy fix — she marries her love, gets her best friend back; and on paper, yes, this is such a happy ending, but she doesn’t realize that she puts elphaba (and fiyero) in a position that limits them. and that doesn’t make her evil or vindictive, it just drives home the point that the wizard is a very convincing con artist.

and what will happen when elphaba tries to advocate for something that is against the wizards vision? they’ll try to silence her, say that she’s still “recovering from her wicked ways” or some bullshit. by the wizard’s side, she will never be taken seriously. and the wizard knows that. so yeah, he’ll let the monkeys go because it’s a small price to pay for having elphaba, someone with immense power, under his control.

when chistery led elphaba to the secret passage where the animals were locked up, it was because he saw through the wizard. he’s been silenced so he can’t warn her verbally, so he does the next best thing. i don’t think the monkeys ever really blamed elphaba the way she blamed herself — they just became what she was bound to become if she agreed to be with the wizard. and so, when elphaba freed the locked up animals from their cages, she was also freeing herself. wicked was never going to have a happy ending.

Quick Suvi (WBN) PSA: Red *was* her favorite color. Not *is*.

The importance of remembering her past (especially her curiosity, which is easy for anyone to lose track of inside high-pressure systems that evaluate performance as a success metric) seems to be currently conflated into a factory reset to her 6 year-old self.

Resist the urge to derive comfort from drawing her in the shape of who she used to be as though the last 14 years and the events of Book 1 weren't allowed to change and define her.

I really hope Suvi gets to dye her hair red in the next book and there is a scene where Brennan describes how blood cannot be seen in her hair. Hopefully it would be an enemy's blood.

Hey Aabria!

I’m interested in running a game using the same mechanics as you did in MisMag2 and I know it’s just an expanded Kids on Brooms system but I was wondering if you had any set mechanics or rules for the system that couldn’t be reversed engineered from watching the season again. Thank you in advance and I hope you’re having an amazing day!

I've been in this stupid gutter for like 60 years, and I still NEVER see my inbox. Thank you for the reminder that I should polish up those mechanics to share! My quick and dirty answer without looking at ANY of my technical docs for fear of falling in a little hyperfix hole is: - base 6 stats [brains/brawn/fight/flight/grit/charm] reskinned with M-words (along with Adversity Tokens: they're Motes of Magic now, baby, and you WILL regret this bit almost immediately) - mechanic from MM1 lost: Common-Fucking-Sense die. - 7th stat added: Mark. This one's fills the gap for Perception/Insight and can only be rolled as a snap decision because it's about what you notice, not what you focus on. (If I let them take half of their die during the season, it's because I'm a goddamn softie that doesn't actually say "no" to them enough) - Magic Track: starts as a d4 and ramps. At a d20, create a magic item with a consistent magical effect. Item can be destroyed for 10 Motes of Magic. Then reset track at d4. - Motive Track: 7 point (-3 to +3) scale to chart play against player-derived ideal; this was a quick & dirty solve for the lack of leveling in KoB, especially as it intersected with the changes of the PCs 3 years after the events of S1. I may be remembering this incorrectly, so I reserve the right for this to be different later, but at a -3, one stat's die type increases (while another decreases). At a +3, one die type increases without lowering another. Work with your player to make the change consistent with the PC's relationship to their Motive. At this point, the Motive can be changed and the track is reset. - DCs begin HIGH in this system, because play will quickly make the party hyper-competent via Motes and Magic Item creation. Any specific questions?

I am in my first ever Vampire the Masquerade campaign and its the second session and what do you mean we are not all friendly. What do you mean the Gangrel character hit me for 5 damage and any more it will be aggravated. What do you mean I hit him back for one damage because my character wanted to assert dominance and not the Masquerade is breached and I gotta catch a very slippy guy with a ballerina vampire while the gangrel eats candy and sees us struggle.

Shit man, this Battle of Twelve Brooks is fucked. I just saw a guy clap his hands together and make tens of flesh sorcerers emerge from a dreadnaught and decapitate imperial wizards faster than the eye can perceive. The camera didn't even go onto him, thats how common shit like this is. My ass is casting firebolt and level 2 erulian bolts. I think I just heard the sword of the citadel yell "VOLLEY" two skyships over. I gotta get the fuck outta here.

me impatiently to the little french cat boiling me in a stew: chat am I cooked

The guy I was working the enterance with today started talking about Christiantity today and offered me a leaflet, and I immediately thought "Oh fuck he is one of those."

And then he started talking about things from his religion and I was trying to be polite and and to say "Yes, I know what the trinity is. Yes, I know Adam and Eve and the tree of knowledge. Yes, I know who Jesus is. Yes, I know..."

And when I said "Oh there is something similar to the Rapture in Hinduism" he. Kept. Talking. Same when I started to talk about other things.

I said "Hey, you have interrupted me a few times, and I wanna know if this is you preaching or are we having a conversation. Because if you are preaching, then we are done here."

And he went on a tangent about how people find it hard to understand stuff when he usually talks about it and I had to repeat what I said.

Then he was like "Sure, I am okay with knowing what you know too."

And after I talked for a bit he was like "I see. I didn't know this before"

And then he shut up and took a seat.
