So I can’t have been the only one to wonder what the heck is going on with Ent gender. Like, why is the loss of the Entwives such a big deal? Why can’t the Ents just self-pollinate if they’re tree-people?
Because they are dioecious trees, obviously. There are in fact trees out there that have separate male and female plants, likes willows or gingko trees. They also tend to be slightly more K-selected than other tree species. I think it fits with the Ents and their missing Entwife problem.
I just realized that Elwing and Earendil are a weird genderswapped parallel to Manwe and Varda. In which Manwe, the Bird God, parallels with Elwing, who actually turns into a bird. And Varda, Goddess of Stars, matches with Earendil who becomes a star.
