The absence of Nettles in House of the Dragon lays bare two serious problems with the writers: structural racism and a lack of creativity. Nettles is an important, complex, and symbolic character in Fire & Blood a Black woman from a humble background who breaks the Targaryen elitist logic by taming a dragon without “pure blood.”
Instead of exploring this paradigm shift, the writers chose to erase the character and recycle conflicts through already established figures. This is not narrative simplification; it is a choice. When a Black character challenges the myth of Valyrian supremacy, she becomes “disposable.”
