A North Atlantic long-finned pilot whale spyhops in dark water, lifting the front quarter of its body vertically above the surface. It is a large, hefty dolphin with a bulbous, overhanging melon and no real beak. It has long flippers with an arched leading edge. Its skin is slick black, with a pale grey patch shaped like an inverted anchor on the chest between the flippers.ALT

Where’s it made? Who brought it here? How much were they paid? Who makes it? Is it made in separate parts and put together? How much were they all paid to do this? Where do they get the materials? Who paid for that? Who brings it there? How much were they paid? Who streamlined the base materials? How much were they paid? Who gathered the base materials? Where? How much were they paid? Is it good for them? Is it good for us? Is it good for the land? Is it necessary? Is it biodegradable? How much does it hurt? Do I need it? Do I even want it?

we should globally ban the introduction of more powerful computer hardware for 10-20 years, not as an AI safety thing (though we could frame it as that), but to force programmers to optimize their shit better

I reblogged this like 9 times kinda jokingly, but software should be able to run on older and less powerful hardware, and consume less power on newer hardware. Like, this is a real problem imo

image

I completely agree with this but I do need you to understand that the image above is 32 times the size of the lunar mission’s memory

image

This is what the image looked like compressed to 4 kb

image

“compressed” to 3934 bytes by cropping, dithering down to 5 colors, and then manually redrawing/recoloring parts of the image, formatted as 4-bit PNG

some combination of these methods is probably best (reducing colors but also reducing quality of areas such as the wings and the water
