tho the most recent hickory i’ve got with troll legs was actually for a genre swap; a fun ‘what if i drew them as each other’s genre’ flickory scenario that ended up getting lore as i dabbled with it. cause y'know, if you switch one bro, you switch them all. y'all get it.
i don’t have the energy to fully elaborate on what all i cooked up, but i can at least post the drawings i had for the idea.
(kept my 'hickory has troll hair problems’ headcanon and worked that into his cloak, which doubles as camouflage)

the one thing i will say is, y'know, where u swap floyd, you put in hickory. and all that that implies. and if i felt bad for floyd because he was too big to lay down while he was in the diamond, putting hickory in the same spot …

Blame more flickemo channel shenanigans for these, some "hey what if we dyed hickory" recolored edits from @sandflakedraws, and the term the "hicklings" from @kosmic-kalamity and @mimipalooza07, and then i named them. and made a whole au because of course i did.
So these are kids Hickory had Guy Diamond style on his own but also Bruce style with having all of them at once.
5 at once was a lot for Hickory so they hatched early and very fruit gummy, they are just little bugs
i’ve currently got 8 designs on various items ready to be taken home should you be so inclined. and hopefully adding more, if these do well. i know many of you have been kindly asking for merch for years, and i’m so happy that i can offer some now!
with these designs, i thought i’d lean stronger into the print friendly side, with clean 2D lines, limited color palettes, and more exaggerated anime proportions. maybe in the future i can collab with you all and bring more specific ideas to life~

i wasn’t really finding what i wanted in the floyd fic landscape, and decided i’d try to write it, right? something small and cute. 7-10 chaps maybe. would mostly be about him recovering and connecting with everyone now that he’s not actively dying.
but wait, in order to explore that correctly, i also need to set up his previous dynamics with his 5 brothers & gramma rosie. okay, more like 20 chapters.
. but wait wait, in order for that to land, i also have to give each bro their own breathing space and a good before/after, because i find it more engaging to hop around and switch POVs. m-maybe 40 chapters…
but wait wait wait, all of this will hit better if we actually experience the events of the past 20 years with them, rather than talking about it in past tense. oh man. how many chapters?
aight. time to cook how to showcase floyd’s backstory while also making it thematically resonant.
oh hey. the yodelers are brothers. i can have them meet floyd. their background is just the right amount of vague enough that i can use them to set up early parallels to provide later payoffs, particularly with john & dickory and floyd & hickory.

i sat myself down. i am not a writer. i could maybe write a 10 chapter fic. i cannot write something that would take 400K words to say properly. i just aint got that kinda power yet.

if i cut the excess, make it bare bones, kill the darlings i need to, i think i’d end up with around 400-600 pages to explore. The Touch Of Sunlight was something like 153 pages.

In a game where many characters in The House of Hades start rather cold or prickly with us (Hades, Thanatos, Megaera), having Hypnos be warm & welcoming, and even silly, endeared him to me instantly (not to leave Dusa, Achilles, or Nyx outta the mix).
… And then,
I watched as people bulldozed over him, belittled him, insulted him, ignored him, shamed him, and threatened him… all for the crime of being bad at a task that is kinda fundamentally counter to his core as a deity.
“Wow, such a disaster that Hypnos isn’t doing his job as… The House of Hades’ Greeter..? Like he’s the god of .. lists or something? Certainly not anything else.”
Multiple characters stress that his assignment is important, but then they also say they could replace him immediately. So it’s a tough job, but it doesn’t require Hypnos to do it … why are we pushing at him so hard to do this work again? Is sleep just seen as laziness?
like, this is THE HYPNOS ARC from the first game…
and they resolve it like ‘he just was too stupid to think of this easy solution, haha🤣. it’s really funny when people struggle with tasks that everyone else can do easily, and just need the obvious pointed out to them🤷. and now hypnos sleeps less🥳! and is more useful🥳! which equates to him inherently having more worth😊😊😊.’
hey have i mentioned that i have adhd and fatigue? and that i have a hard time with tasks that most people can do easily? and it’s been a struggle for a while not to link my worth with my usefulness? (those of you who’ve read The Touch of Sunlight may be sensing a theme)
either way. i’m not making any sort of claim/accusation about intentions or anything here, i sincerely doubt the design process went further than 'lol hypnos gag character’.
… but i think about my silly guy. warm to everyone he talks to, a little slow on the uptake, well meaning and bumbling and funny and lonely and tired and sweet,
and i’m still a little bit haunted that it resolved the way it did.
