reminder to worldbuilders: don't get caught up in things that aren't important to the story you're writing, like plot and characters! instead, try to focus on what readers actually care about: detailed plate tectonics

@dragonpyre any chance you could elaborate on this

I grew up learning about land formations. Seeing fictional maps that don’t follow the logic and science of them makes me upset

What are the most common sins you’ve seen relating to this? I wanna know

Mordor.

Why is the mountain range square. How did the mountain range form. Why is there one singular volcano in the center. Why does it act like a composite volcano but have magma that acts like it’s from a shield. If it’s hotspot based volcanic activity why is there only one volcano.

And then the misty mountains!!!! Why isn’t there a rain shadow!! And why is there a FOREST where the rain shadow should be!!!!!!!!

So what is a rain shadow?

Wind blows clouds in from the sea, but mountains are so tall the clouds can't get past 'em, so you get deserts on the windward side of mountain ranges because clouds can't get there to water the land, or do so only very rarely.

Oh yeah nothing is more annoying than fantasy maps that can't get mountains, rivers and rain shadows right.

May I recommend my new favorite tool: Mapgen4. You start with a random seed and then add mountains, valleys, shallow water, or oceans as you like. You can adjust the wind direction to make wind shadows off the mountains fall where you want. You can adjust overall raininess to make the rivers larger or smaller, or have more or fewer tributaries. It works best for small, isolated landmasses (think islands more than continents) but as there’s no scale bar and it’s all slightly abstracted anyway you can do whatever you want with it. I’ve only just started playing with it but it’s SO FUN.

I do think this could be useful for writers! ...Caveat, if you're going to use this for making a map for anything published (digital or paper, even if it's only in a fanfic archive or whatever), please, please credit the creator and their program as how you made that map! The more ways information like this gets out there, the more useful it'll be to other writers, roleplaying game DMs/GMs, creators, etc.

One of my favourites for mapping plates, biomes, etc is Tectonics.js. If you're familiar with how tectonics shape a planet, you can guess where the features go by toggling plates, crust thickness, etc. Between Mapgen4 and Tectonics.js, we've got some pretty sweet tools at our disposal.

More stuff!:

Also I would recommend looking into Landscape Archaeology as well! That's because Landscape archeology is basically adding the social/cultural layer on top of all that geology and geography. Environments change when communities live in them, and communities likewise adapt to various environments.

This is a short free introduction to the concept: "Notes on Landscape Archaeology." To summarize, Landscape archaeology sort of like...studies the relation of people to places/spaces (that is, landscapes) in time.

Also this paper [An Archeology of Landscapes] breaks down/introduces the key concepts that I learned which is first that you can form the "construct paradigm" of a landscape from settlement ecology, ritual landscapes, and ethnic landscapes.

And then the highlights of their summary of what constitutes defining a landscape:

  1. Landscapes are not synonymous with natural environments. Landscapes are synthetic (Jackson, 1984, p. 156), with cultural systems structuring and organizing peoples’ interactions with their natural environments ...
  2. Landscapes are worlds of cultural product ... Through their daily activities, beliefs, and values, communities transform physical spaces into meaningful places. ...
  3. Landscapes are the arena for all of a community’s activities. Thus landscapes not only are constructs of human populations but they also are the milieu in which those populations survive and sustain themselves. A landscape’s domain involves patterning in both within-place and between-place contexts ...
  4. Landscapes are dynamic constructions, with each community and each generation imposing its own cognitive map on an anthropogenic world of interconnected morphology, arrangement, and coherent meaning ...

Basically a "landscape" is made by a community living in an environment. Once you have a geological environment that makes sense, landscape archaeology is like... Basically how I feel confident knowing where trade routes would be on a map, where there are areas of continual high conflict, what kinds of agriculture exists where, etc. once the geological stuff is hammered out, it's like...I know how that would influence the local cultures and vice versa. At that point, it's easy to start marking the natural borders, settlements, trade/port cities, and even strategic fortresses. If you have properly put rivers on a map, then marking your port cities is effortless, basically.

Also:

If you are like me and find it helpful to have video reference for a process/activity in addition to a written guide, Artifexian is a YouTube channel that does a LOT of world building stuff and specifically he's in the process of creating a world following a lot of Worldbuilding Pasta's methodology!

3 movies and like 30 different characters (including his alleged husband) and the only person whose personal space benoit blanc doesnt respect is a sopping wet pathetic priest from albany that spends half his screentime crashing out and the other half on his knees. and instead of showing an ounce of decorum blanc is like allow me to match, nay, exceed your freak real quick. and this erratic behavior cant fully be written off as religious trauma or personal problems bc blanc doesnt get all up in martha or the flock's space even though theyre being plenty annoying hes only ever crowding jud's space only ever barking at him only ever manhandling him. only him. the only character he gets like this around in 3 movies. and then one year later hes like im normal now and youre normal now too lets just shake hands like the normal men we are. and jud is like :/ this is lame. hold me?

I understand that people have issues with ep 3, but I’m grateful for it bc it gave us the Scott/Shane fight and therefore all of these great posts on Tumblr.com

“What the hell are you doing?” It bubbles out of his mouth before he can stop it, spiteful and angry and still sounding so much smaller than he wanted it to. He’s standing barefoot in Hopper’s kitchen, cigarette hanging forgotten between his fingers.

The chief levels him with a calm stare. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, kid.”

Billy scowls. He’s spent the past three days doing everything in his power to get Hopper riled up, something he was *excellent* at, if he did say so himself, and Hopper hadn’t so much as flinched. He hadn’t raised a hand toward Billy, not even just as a threat, and the urge to fight was itching under his skin like bugs. Worse, Hopper had stopped yelling all together. It felt purposeful and fucking targeted, and Billy hates it.

“Don’t play dumb.” He’s smoking in the kitchen on purpose, yet another scheme to get Hopper to lose his mind- but he’d come home, sighed, set his keys on the table and muttered something about “being careful”. “You’ve been treating me like some fucking doll for the past week. You act like I’m not even here when I act up, you’re doing it on purpose and you know it.”

Hopper shrugs. He leans against the kitchen counter, and suddenly Billy feels a little unsure. “I don’t know, kid. What do you want me to do?”

Billy swallows. His throat feels dry. “I don’t know!” He throws his hands up in frustration. “I’m not fuckin’ glass, you don’t need to pretend I’m not being a piece of shit, chief! I hate this fake fucking attitude, it’s bullshit, you know it, why the hell aren’t you doing anything?!”

Silence. They stand there for several seconds, Billy’s skin itching like a bad sunburn, before Hopper finally speaks.

“You’re not a bad kid, Billy.”

Suddenly, Billy doesn’t feel sure of himself at all. His throat tightens. Bullshit. Bullshit. What was this?

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You’re not.” Hopper straightens, and steps forward, but he stops when Billy makes an aborted flinch and tenses his shoulders up. “You’re not a bad kid. And even if you *were*, it doesn’t make what Neil did to you right.”

The cigarette between his fingers suddenly feels like it’s going to fall. Billy swallows repeatedly. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.” He repeats, because what else does he say to that?

Hopper just hums, calm as ever, and Billy wants to be angry really bad, but he just stands there with a heavy feeling in his chest.

“I think I know you pretty well, kid.” Hopper says. “You can put up this tough guy bullshit and yell and kick your feet but you’re a good kid and a good brother. You just dealt a bad hand. You got that?” Hopper puts his hand on Billy’s shoulder, and this time, he doesn’t flinch away. “Got that?” Hopper repeats, and Billy wants to vanish under his excruciating gaze. He swallows again, his throat sore and dry.

“Y-yeah. Got it.” He mutters, dropping his eyes from the chiefs face. He pats his shoulder heavily, mutters something about keeping an eye on his nicotine intake, and walks away. Billy stands in the kitchen alone and blinks tears out of his eyes.

That whole thing was really fucking stupid.

Right?

He puts out his cigarette.

Imagine Billy was still around in s5 and him and Steve had this rivalry thing going on since season 2, with a slow development from spiteful teasing into playful banter and you can see they like each other but never admit it and then they get teamed up on a mission, arguing all the time until Billy's final moment is coming and it is a moment of sacrificing himself for Steve to save his life and instead of going full Lion King with Scar saying 'long live the king' before he lets Mufasa fall to his death, Billy looks up at Steve, who feels his grip slipping and says: "You've always been my King"

and he falls and Steve goes 'BILLY NOOOOOoooooooo..o..o..'

And then Steve rescues him last second and they fall back and Billy lands on top of him, both panting and Steve's grip is so tight and then he says some shit like:

"Sorry buddy, you don't get to die a hero, not on my watch."

~And they live happily ever after~

hihihihihihihihihi got me giggling and stuff ☺️

“Why didn’t you kiss me?” Steve begs. And it’s a stupid thought, he knows. “Why didn’t I?” He is to his knees. Pathetic and dirty and bloody and he can’t fucking feel his face right and he can’t tell the difference between his tears and whatever is on his face he doesn’t want to think about. It usually is a stupid thought, but especially now. “Why didn’t you, please, please, come one, please”

He chokes on it.

He fucking chokes on it and doesn’t know what it is.

This was never supposed to happen. This was never even an option, this supernatural fucked up shit that ruined Steve’s life so bad he doesn’t even want to think about how his life might’ve been ruined to begin with.

And now— And nowFUCK

“I hate you, I hate you, I’ll hate you forever if you die, don’t you get that?!” He chokes on it again, throat spasming around this version of grief that comes before, like a premonition.

“Steve…”

No” He sobs into Billy’s dirty hand as he brings it to his face, a semblance of comfort that was never there between them. “Why” his breath hitches, “Why can’t I be happy, I

Steve” Billy’s eyes are wet, with all the things he still can’t say, always so emotionally fucking constipated, fathers teaching sons to repress and to rage with visceral violence, blue eyes that will never look at Steve with freedom because Steve represents shame.

His chest hurts so much and he must be dying, with every breath taken in a world in which Billy is dying Steve is dying too. Steve is dying and he knows it will be too late, too late for anything he could’ve ever done with himself. Billy represents—something—something—Steve will never understand, something that made blue eyes look like a stupid house by the sea and maybe a dog and maybe a cat and maybe something, something, just something stupid thoughts at 2 am bring sense to in always empty houses—

And God please, Steve is begging, ok? Just this once, ok? Just this once, and Steve will never complain again, never, he swears, never.

Billy smiles, the asshole smiles at him. He has the audacity to smile while Steve is actively living his worst nightmare, a nightmare he wasn’t even aware he had before today. Today is the worst day of Steve’s life. But he isn’t the one bleeding out on the floor. He can’t see for a moment from the tears. Isn’t it the worst day of Billy’s life? Why is he smiling?

“Please, Billy,” His voice is small and his words are almost lost on the next breath.

There is panic on Billy’s face for a second, nothing grand or all-encompassing or even remotely incomprehensible. Yet it speeds Steve’s heart even more treacherously.

“I’m sorry, Steve, I’m—“ Billy chokes too, but on blood and not the incorrigible thing that is close to suffocating Steve. “I’m sorry… I’m sorry…” Billy sounds so fragile. So heartbreakingly fragile.

Steve squeezes Billy’s hand. Steve’s other hand—he becomes aware of it once more—presses on Billy’s chest, to feel his heartbeat, always to hear his heartbeat (the way Steve used to place his head on Billy’s chest, just to hear that comforting sound, before Billy would inevitably push him away again with rough, confused hands, always to push him away, not now, now Billy’s hands—Billy’s hands are—)

“I’m sorry, Steve…” Billy says again, wet and with so little of the guy who used to be the bane of Steve’s days.

Steve uses his shoulder to wipe some of the grime and tears from his face, lower lip trembling. “What am I supposed to say to that, Billy?”

Billy snorts, something almost snort, something almost like the annoying guy Steve knows, but that’s almost all gone now. And then— “I’m in love with you, Steve.”

“What” the almost question is out before Steve even gets to process because did he just hear that

“I s…said I”

Steve places the hand that was on Billy’s chest over Billy’s mouth, over Billy’s split, bloody lips, with his split, bloody, lovely words. Steve’s lower lip wobbles again. Billy is in love with him? They never said anything, neither of them. They haven’t even kissed. Steve had been too afraid, so afraid that if he ever said anything then Billy would leave and never look at Steve the same. And now? It feels like the single, most honest thing Billy has ever said to him. “I’m in love with you too”

Billy’s eyes are even more tumultuous.

And he squeezes Steve’s cheek. Steve won’t let go.

He won’t let go.

He won’t let go.

He won’t let go.

The hand goes limp.

Steve stops breathing.

And it’s the end of the world.

Karen Wheeler could not put on her mom hat for two seconds to recognize that Billy was very ill and clearly suffering when she cornered him because she only ever saw him, a teenage boy, as a sexual object. You're not about to gaslight me into thinking she's mother of the year.

everyone on replies is terrified of this fact but i just think it's so sweet and heartwarming. she's holding our hand and leading us somewhere secret and we're both giggling like kids. i love her
