The U.S. states of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama also have the most biodiverse freshwater ecosystems in the world.

The Appalachian Mountains are notable for having the world's greatest diversity of tree species in a temperate forest, with over 100 species of tree that make up the forest. They're also a global hotspot of lichen biodiversity.

Fun fact, dozens of genera of plants only have 2 species in them, one found in Appalachia and one found in SE Asia. These are called vicariad species pairs. Eastern Asia and Appalachia has very similar climates, that's why all the major Appalachian invasive species, such as Kudzu, are from eastern Asia

The SE United States has some of the nation's most biodiverse ecosystems but they are also some of the least protected.

In general, is it more convenient to get around where you live by car or by public transit? Do you own** a car?

**or regularly use a car owned by someone else (e.g. your parents' car, a romantic partner's car, etc.). Do NOT answer yes if the car is owned by your work and you only use it during the work day (e.g. you're a delivery driver, but you don't use keep the delivery vehicle at home or use it for personal purposes when you're off the clock).

  • Car is more convenient; I own** a car
  • Car is more convenient; I do not own** a car
  • Public transit is more convenient; I own** a car
  • Public transit is more convenient; I do not own** a car
  • Nuance (explain in replies)

"And so being a Negro in America is not a comfortable experience. It means being a part of the company of the bruised, the battered, the scarred and the defeated. Being a Negro in America means trying to smile when you want to cry.

It means trying to hold on to physical life amid psychological death. It means the pain of watching your children grow up with clouds of inferiority in their mental skies. It means having your legs cut off, and then being condemned for being a cripple.

It means seeing your mother and father spiritually murdered by the slings and arrows of daily exploitation, and then being hater for being an orphan. Being a Negro in America means listening to suburban politicians talk eloquently against open housing while arguing in the same breath that they are not racists.

It means being harried by day and haunted by night by a nagging sense of nobodyness and constantly fighting to be saved from the poison of bitterness. It means the ache and anguish of living in so many situations where hopes unborn have died."

Jerry Fox: not actually the cat pictured sadly

a black and white photo of a tuxedo cat wearing glasses.ALT

Jerry Fox was a blind 'tiger' cat who worked as Assistant Janitor at Brooklyn Borough Hall. Working for over 25 years and making many dignified friends, when he began to go blind he was fitted with spectacles.

In 1904, Jerry found some papers burning in an empty office, and howled loudly. This alerted a nearby policeman, who put out the fire. Without Jerry, there would have been significant damage to the building and potential harm and death.

Jerry died later that year, nearly 30 years old. The New York Times ran his obituary:

"Had each of the several hundred city officeholders, judges, lawyers, volunteer firemen, war veterans, and business men in Borough Hall Square lost an old college chum, there could not have been sorrow more profound than that which greeted the death of Jerry."

Consider signing this petition to install a plaque honoring Jerry at the Brooklyn Borough Hall

Eugenicists are idiots. We don't need smarter humans; we've already got plenty of intellectual resources that are sadly lying fallow or going to waste because of how unequally our society is structured. The idea that social problems are a result of individual deficiency is child logic.

It doesn't matter how good your bricks are if you suck at building walls.

They’re also idiots because they can’t measure the nebulous qualities they claim to propose and because they’re working off deeply flawed, racist assumptions too. Let’s not give a pass on the whole depth of idiocy.

I still can’t get over how these morons apparently looked at what we’ve done to dogs and went “you know what? we should do that to people”

the french bulldog is barely functional at this point because recklessly breeding for “desirable” traits has severely compromised the health of the breed, but sure, let’s try it out with human beings, i’m sure that’ll go great

ICE fucking abandoned the scene in a Minneapolis neighborhood and left their battle plans and designs on the city, fake license plates, and challenge tokens which they reward themselves for arrests. Looney Tunes shit.

mind-altering-bugs
robotmieser

The fact they give out challenge coins for arrests really cements the fact that they're just a bunch of shit heads trying to feel very tough and powerful(tm) and this is the only way they can do it.

Congress is now considering the appropriations bill for the Department of Homeland Security, whose funding runs out at the end of January.

Call your members of Congress and tell them to vote NO on any bill that increases ICE's funding.

Please demand that the DHS appropriations bill prohibit ICE and Border Patrol agents from carrying guns and that it unambiguously declare that agents do not have absolute immunity under the law if they harm civilians.

Also tell them that any bill must restrict ICE and Border Patrol’s ability to conduct dragnet arrest operations and target people based on their race, language or accent. And the bill must clarify that ICE agents are liable under civil and criminal law if they harm civilians.

Do this as soon as you can.

To reach your representative or senator, call the U.S. Congressional Switchboard at (202) 224-3121.

Tell them the state and city where you live. They will connect you to any member’s office.
