Guys if you want queer shit written by queers on our own terms you're going to have to start seeking out weird independent media. I'm sorry that's the only place you can regularly find it idk what to tell you, we can't keep acting like there's nothing if we're not getting blockbusters and triple A titles or whatever it is we're waiting around for. The thing you keep saying you want is already being offered for free by one person making a passion project on the internet and you would both benefit enormously if you interacted with it instead of lamenting that the only options we have for representation are pandering afterthoughts from corporate shit

I say this with so, so much care: Real queer shit written by real queers can and will sometimes make you uncomfortable. That's one of the defining features of weird, independent queer media. And weird independent media more broadly. Art that comes from true individual passion and authenticity has edges and bite to it that mass market corporate products intentionally do not. Has a rawness that can offend.

You are allowed to feel uncomfortable about it. But don't ask for queers to self censor for your comfort.

My favorite form of redemption arc is “I hate that I have morals now”

Like “I realized that I was in the wrong and now I will work hard to atone” is good and all, but “how dare you infect me with morals” will always be so much more entertaining

That moment the former baddie starts to walk away from some bad situation, almost gets out, and then just stops, curses, and turns around to go help?

*chef’s kiss* delicious

This one gets it

btw if youre young and scared of doing adult things without your parents ive learned that like 90% of the time you can just tell the doctors office or the dmv "haha sorry ive never done this without help before... can you show me how to do this?" the employee will not care. if that means anything to you

There are a million and one correct reasons why "corporate sponsored tumblr influencer making money" would never work. But one reason which I rarely see mentioned is that, for every Popular Post By Popular Tumblr User, only a small percentage of its notes came directly from source. The rest came from spread.

Like I genuinely think there is no singular Tumblr user with enough active followers to produce a Popular Post without reblogs that breach well outside their circle. There's a few who could probably get a ~1,000 note likes-only post on a post with reblogs disabled. Which is really not doing numbers compared to some standard-fare tumblr post like "enjoying my penits and crackerjacks" with 10,000 notes from some OP with 300 followers.

Posts cannot do numbers without the broader tumblr community's say-so. And the vast majority of those people do not give a shit about any single OP. And a single OP, even with top-tier follower count, could never generate post escape-velocity by shilling bullshit no one wants to people who are actively hostile to advertising.

ive always rly liked the idea of a member of a group of adventurers having what everyone assumes is very well trained hawk and then at the end of their journey its casually revealed that thats actually just his buddy whos a shapeshifter and just rly likes being a hawk

the guy also like thinks everyone knows bc he never tries to hide the fact that the hawk is a person but everyone assumes hes always just joking. like the others being like "damn its crazy how he knows exactly what you want him to do its like he knows english or something." and the guy is just like "well yeah thats his first language so ofc he's fluent??" and they all go "haha good one" and move on, leaving him confused

they just think hes a quirky guy that really loves his pet and says things like "the 9 of us" even tho there are clearly only 8 people! he just cares about the bird so much he counts it as a group member haha !

I remember one time I was doing an ADHD evaluation with a kid who had asked to go to the bathroom like 3 times during the 30-ish minute part of the interview where we asked his mom questions, so I knew that was his go-to excuse when bored. We get started on the WISC-V after the interview and within 30 seconds of vocab starting he asks if he can go to the bathroom, and I say:

“No.”

And this kid rolls his eyes because DUH and he says “Why not?” all cranky-styles, so I said

“Because you don’t need to go to the bathroom, you’re bored and you need to move. If you need to move, tell me and I’ll let you know if we’re at a part of the test where we can pause. Like, for example, we can pause right now if you wanna race me around the building.”

And this kids face fucken LIT up. We did three laps around the outside of the building and came back in and he finished like 3 subtests and asked if he could move so we got up and tried to see how high we could jump for 3 minutes and the finished the rest of the assessment with one bathroom break. And that was all it took tbh, this kid was SO capable he just needed to move and hadn’t been allowed to do so before. I also like making people mad by pointing out that I know what they’re up to, then just giving them permission to do the thing they were sneakily trying to do in the first place. It’s like being affectionately annoying and it’s part of how I connect to others.

people saying “don’t use your full government name for your ao3”, “create different emails for work and personal use” but personally I think it’s both sad and dystopian how capitalism/companies/even schools think they have the rights to cross your personal boundaries and insert themselves into your personal life. like, I get it, safety wise, why checking digital footprints can be important sometimes. but a gay fanfiction is not a fucking threat that could ever cause anybody harm. it’s funny (not really, it’s still sad and dystopian) how they now think they can control your personal life and prevent you from having hobbies

“but what if i’m being annoying :(“ everyone’s annoying dipshit it came free with fucking being alive and existing. now go talk to your friends

you’re a living breathing human being on this bitch of an earth and you have wants and needs and take up space and that’s literally fine. if your friends don’t get that you need better friends. there i’ve solved it

Something that's been irking me is how out of the top 25 ships on AO3 for 2025, 24 of them (counting Other) are queer, including 20 of 25 being M/M. And YET the ship that had multiple fics picked up by major publishers for traditional releases is, you guessed it, that single, lone F/M ship. And I think I've finally figured out why this bugs me.

It's the continued "50 Shades-ifying" of fan fic.

Traditional publishing is a for-profit enterprise that caters to the least common denominator reader because that's what looks good for the bottom line. Where fan fic is a free-play space allowing for more bold, exploratory writing because it isn't beheld to the capitalist machine. When we cross these wires by buying into one type of fic (when we have actual statistics to prove it is not even the most popular), all we're doing is reinforcing notions of what is considered, "safe, normal, and sell-able." Which for trad pub is cis, het, white romances.

Worse. The history of fan fic is grounded in queer stories and ships. Fic is and has always been queer. But due to trad pub interference, there are actual human beings out there who now believe fic is all 50 Shades, Dramione, and Adam Driver because of what they see on the shelves. So this capitalist interference is actually contributing to the erasure of the medium's queer history.

Anyway, I write fic and work in trad pub, and have strong feelings about the importance of keeping them separate. This is just kind of where it begins. Stats from centerofthelights on AO3
