Intro Post

Hi there! I’m Seiya, aka starsniper! (she/her) This is my blog for assorted blorbo posting and writing, hope you enjoy your stay! 😄

Socials:

BlueSky: starsniper (you will find me there when this site burns to the ground)

Discord: starsniper. You’ll find me hanging out across various Sandman and Arcane servers mostly, so come say hello if you see me!

AO3: starsniper. (I will always be logged in when I comment!)

Transformative Works: Consider this blanket permission to create any type of transformative work based off what I’ve written! I only ask you let me know what you’ve created either using the “Inspired By” link on AO3 or tagging me on Tumblr or Bluesky, just because I love, love, love seeing that sort of thing.

Below the cut are a list of my personal tags to make searching my blog a bit easier if you’re looking for something I’ve made. There’s also a list of general fandoms I blog about, though the list isn’t exhaustive as my interests change fairly frequently. I try my best to tag sensitive content, but if I’ve missed something, please send me a DM or a non-anon ask!

Hey lovely people,

I’m just wondering, if there’s anybody out there who loves reading and reads quite a bit, how do you do it?

This past year I had a hard time because I was pushing myself with writing and stuff, which is good, but this year I want to do more art and read as well. But I have no idea how to even start and keep myself organized. Help?

I think it depends if you want to read physical books or virtual ones. But a list can help. Like maybe # books in 2026, or # comic book per month. Maybe something you’ve been wanting to read. Or maybe let your internet and irl friends recommend you something (for example, I think you’d enjoy reading Sandman. You can start with the first book - Preludes and Nocturnes. OR fanfics - feel free to click the tag “fic rec” on my blog).

I share books and recs with my workmates. It’s a good way to talk about them and economically accessible, too. For e-books, I also have the amazing @bazzybelle , @seiya-starsniper, @arialerendeair (and whoever wants to share chaos with me) recommending me books. Then I scream on their author’s thread on the sadman discord server.

There are reading challenges, too. You can Google that term and internet will provide different lists and ideas.

I hope this is helpful 🩷

Don’t forget about audiobooks! Between myself, @softest-punk and @silver-dream89, we’ve sunk probably a thousand hours or so into audiobooks. For me, they’re a lot more accessible as a person who commutes between 4-8 hours a week to and from work. I can easily finish a book a week if I’m listening to it while I’m driving. I also love putting on an audiobook while I’m doing mundane chores like folding laundry, washing dishes, tidying, etc.

As far as organizing, I use Goodreads and Storygraph to keep track of what I’m reading. Unfortunately they do both utilize AI to an extent for “book recommendations”, but they’re both incredibly easy and accessible ways to keep track of your reading progress. Both apps also have a variety of challenges you can participate in to give yourself that extra boost of motivation.

And of course, like Yammy said, having book friends to scream with is a HUGE motivator. @arialerendeair just spent 5 days yelling at me about a book series that I love and I was so delighted to hear her reactions that I went back and started re-reading the novels myself. Sometimes you want to read a book and are not sure if you want to invest, and it’s good to have a person who’s either read the book, or is willing to read the book and judge it for you, provided you trust their taste in reading.

What kind of books were you looking to read? I’d love to have another book friend!

AO3 will be down for about 15 hours starting at 08:00 UTC on January 21 (what time is that for me?) while we make some improvements to searching bookmarks and series, including:

  • adding the ability to search, filter, and sort bookmarks by word count
  • making sure bookmark search results are correct when you use tags containing letters and numbers
  • preventing series blurbs from listing tags that were only used on draft works
  • preventing series blurbs from listing tags used on restricted works for guests
  • updating series bookmark search so it only searches the tags on works you can access

Please follow our status page for updates.

Starting 24 hours from now, AO3 will be down for about 15 hours.

AO3 will be going down for about 15 hours of maintenance at 08:00 UTC (what time is that for me?).

I just really hate the word "fandom". It's just a portmanteau of "fan" and "random". It sounds like some desperate attempt to be quirky and different. Plus, the word "fanbase" already exists.

idk, i thought it was fan + kingdom, or fanatic + domain??

but yeah, it is a bit weird how we have ‘fandom’ when ‘fanbase’ already existed? but that’s language for you, always changing all the time

Actually, Anon, fandom is significantly older than fan base or fanbase; the OED gives the first known citation of fandom meaning “the community of fans of a thing” from 1903, while their first entry for fan base isn’t until the 1970s. If you compare the frequencies of the two terms in Google Ngram Viewer, you’ll see that fandom has historically been far more frequent, with fan base running a distant second (and the closed form fanbase an even more distant third).

The OED also rejects your portmanteau hypothesis, though I suppose sportswriters from the 1900s might’ve been trying to be quirky and different when they coined fandom from the productive derivational suffix -dom, which the OED also gives copies examples of throughout the 1800s (including BA-dom, old fogey-dom, blizzard-dom and theater-dom.

Respect the fandom, guys. It’s older than Steve Rogers.

I am absolutely loving the little collection of ducklings I’m gathering in my other fandom server that are becoming just as obsessed with the bean counter series as I am hehehe <3

That said, if anyone wants to join a weekly streaming party hosted by yours truly, DM me and we can chat!

why did they start breeding busses to have flat faces. they can’t breathe

if you think this

looks better than this

you’re part of the problem. I’m so tired of all the excuses like “oh they look cuter!” “why do you care?” THEY CAN’T BREATHE. People intentionally breeding these vehicles to give them health problems because they “like how it looks” makes me so mad

Actually, flat faced buses can breathe fine! This is a case of convergent evolution, but the two types of buses are not genetically related.

image
image

Pointed nose buses are decended from trucks, and have their engines located in the front. This requires the larger nose in order to provide the space for the engine as well as adequate ventilation.

image

Meanwhile, flat nosed buses are actually descended from city buses (which in turn descend from trolleys), and were domesticated due to their greater maneuverability and capacity.

Contrary to popular belief, flat nosed busses typically do not experience breathing problems. Their engines are located in the back of the bus, with a large breathing vent located in the rear.

image

These buses also have a different structure to accommodate this change, typically including doubled back tires, a different weight distribution, and a change in location of the emergency egress door from the back to the left side.
