What happens in your novel?

First of all, sorry if you asked this a while ago!! I never get asks, so I rarely check the ask box.

I am writing a fantasy novel called The Truth About Brazings. It’s the first book in a planned four part series.

In short, it's about a girl who's trying to find out why her town's history is so strange, but ends up getting dragged into a war between two groups of fey living in the forest.

The story begins with a girl named Alvie Willynde who lives in a small town in Ontario called Brazings. Brazings has a local folklore tradition that's uncommon for Canadian towns. Stories tell of settlers seeing and interacting with moving plants, talking animals, and strange, inhuman people. When Alvie was a child, she started taking notes and researching all these stories, intending to find out the truth behind them. Were they real? If so, who were these people? Are they still around?

At the beginning of the book, Alvie befriends the new kid in her class, a boy named Kearney Lakeside. Kearney’s family is actually one of the families that founded Brazings, and they figure in a few of these legends. They’re always protectors guarding Brazings against any threat from the strange people and things hiding in the trees.

Unbeknownst to Alvie, there is a strange masked man named Cerin watching her. He seems to be under orders to take her to his master, a mysterious man named Dwyer. Cerin doesn’t know why Dwyer is interested in her and it perplexes him.

That's basically the first two chapters. Most of the book is dedicated to introducing the characters, Brazings, and the world hidden in the forest. As I mentioned earlier, Brazings' big secret is that there are fey in the woods, and the series revolves around exploring their world, what they want with Alvie, and exactly who Cerin is.

Some drawings of Alvie! She always carries a notebook. She also doesn't like skirts, but I love drawing her in dresses anyway.

And here's Cerin! He wears a mask pretty much all the time, but his face is my worst-kept secret.

And here is their first real interaction. It was unpleasant for both of them.

And here's Kearney, one of the only characters I'd trust to babysit.

And here's Cerin’s master, Dwyer, and the other fey leader, Nimue. These two represent opposing forces and have been rivals for centuries. Both want Alvie for their own purposes, but Nimue also wants to keep her safe and allow her to be a child as much as possible.

So...that's a general description of my book. I didn't want to include any major spoilers, but there is a lot more going on. There's way more on my Instagram:

Hi ! I'm wondering if you have any tips on how to draw power wheelchairs. They always look off when I draw them and hardly anyone draws them with out it being f3t1sh content so Im just looking for some tips.

Hello!

I think the major thing that helps me the most is being a powerchair user so I have first-hand reference, but let me think of tips. . .

• when drawing a powerchair (or any wheelchair, for that matter) the best way to look at it first is through parts. Analyze and Identify the parts that create the chair (ex: Motor, Back, Headrest, Castors, head-rest).

• Identify why your character is in the powerchair, what do they need it for, and what accommodations does it provide? This is important because some powerchair users have more physical needs than others (Ex: some need assistance in holding their full body upright with add-ons, straps, or special curved pieces) and it will affect their chair, as every powerchair is often custom (unless it’s a foldable / travel or scooter).

remember: this is an extension of their body and movement, they need to look semi-comfortable in the chair (depending on disability, they may never “look” fully comfortable, but many disabled people in powerchairs /aren’t/ and thats also important to remember — you’re aim for a powerchair is to help, assist, and accommodate for movement & mobility, without further hurting or straining the body).

Don’t be afraid to show their disability. Their disability is a part of them & their life — it’s a very important part of them and their experience with the world, some powerchair users may have spasticity or dystonia or muscle contractions, etc, that may look different than able bodied or even other disabled people with different needs.

That’s all i can think of right now, but I hope this can help even a little bit 🩷

Updates from Iran

Some major updates from people in Iran and leaks:

  • While the official number of deaths is stated to be between 2,000-3,000, people estimate that the actual number of deaths is estimated to be at least 12,000. Videos show bodies all over the streets and body bags just lying on the ground.
  • Doctors are reporting being overwhelmed by the casualties.
  • The regime is trying to arrest injured protesters in the hospital.
  • The regime is charging money to return the bodies of murdered protesters to their families. (This practice is already disgusting, but imagine charging money at their rates in Iran's current economic status when people can barely afford bread.)
  • People are reporting that people from the regime's affiliates and proxy groups in the region have already been brought in to help with the suppression.
  • Messages being sent from Iran are saying that curfews are being enforced and that the regime's forces, including these proxies, are shooting indiscriminately at will.
  • Executions will really start tomorrow.
  • The regime is doing whatever it can to cut off people from the world. It's very difficult for people to contact family in Iran. There is still an internet blackout.
  • Despite this, there is still some footage coming out that people are still willing to risk it all and fight.

This is a humanitarian crisis. The people of Iran need your support more than ever. Amplify their voices, and don't let the regime get away with its crimes in darkness. Hold your governments and media to account to make sure that they support the people of Iran and not support the regime.

All eyes on Iran.

Watching movies with small children is an EXPERIENCE, like tiny human, you have NO sense of story progression

Which is to say we put on the first How to Train Your Dragon

And at the dramatic "first flight" scene, two-year-old shouted "HIM FALL" and started SOBBING. She straight up thought that movie had murdered Hiccup and Toothless halfway through. Had to get double parental hugs and a constant stream of reassurances until they figured that whole flying thing out

All movies could be horror movies if your brain hasn't equipped Plot Armor to the protagonists

Anyway five-year-old is pleased to report that he "liked the part where the big dragon exploded"

I have a somewhat related story that I've always wanted to share.

At my old high school, one of our graduation requirements was to do 10 hours of community service. I decided I would knock out one or two of those hours reading to kids at the nearby elementary school during my free period. I brought this book here:

Which is just a collection of all the classic Disney movies adapted into book form. I ended up reading Cinderella to a group of kindergarteners.

When I got to the part where Cinderella's stepsisters ripped apart her first dress, all the children were on the edge of their seats. One little girl was on the verge of tears. Another little girl shouted in horror, "She doesn't get to go to the ball?!"

I can't even begin to tell you how tempted I was to immediately close the book and go "Yup, that's life, kid" and walk off without missing a beat.

wore my thigh high boots on a walk today and we had to take a path through some long grass and while everyone else was rolling their pants into their socks and putting on jackets to protect themselves from ticks i was standing there smug as hell in my thigh high leather boots.

You are going to laugh until your stomach hurts again. You're going to be in awe of a sunset. Watch your favorite show while you eat your favorite food. Find money on the street. Discover a great band you haven't heard of before. You will find your way back.

The Trouble with Hiveworks: an Open Letter

It's been a long ten years and I finally get to talk publicly about what happened behind closed doors.

Please take the time to read this letter linked above and please avoid working with these people. You are more valuable than an opportunity for people like them to use you as cash cow for your work.

Three years ago, I was approached by many artists at Hiveworks asking if their mistreatment was normal. That their feelings of horrible self worth within the company was really just a 'them' problem. Turns out, it was unfortunately normal in that we ALL felt that way. Stolen funds, reworked projects without permission, favouritism, opportunity sabotage- These were the common occruances over at Hive. Artists felt used, ignored, and walked all over to pay Hives bills and ego. People didn't know what to do. I helped co-found the guild in response to so many artists feeling this way, and we slowly gathered together to make a better Hive. Yeah, that's right- we thought we could help change and save the company if we all colaborated, hurt set aside and transparency deeply needed. Unfortunately, that wasn't in the cards. We spent 3 years going back and forth with staff to understand the debt, the mistreatment, the empty promises only to realise that the staff who was left to deal with the mess (because the CEO and COO went hands off or left) couldn't fix what was destroyed.

Hiveworks was supposed to be a beacon for webcomickers. It was supposed to be an indie opportunity to flourish in the small ways we can. But it became yet another example of a greedy publisher who saw an opportunity to take and take and take. It was also a vanity project for Isa and Xel too. They wanted the prestige of working in 'publishing' but didn't care a lick about the artists who brought readers in. If you were someone she thought was an artistic threat, Isa would go out of her way to humble you and put you in your place. That happened Many MANY times to me and my fellow creators. Not only was Hive using our work, it also would remind us how worthless we were in the same breath. Everything felt like some sort of competition, and Isa and Xel made sure artists didn't talk to ecahother about it too. So many instances of the two of them going around gossiping in public about 'the real story' when it came to their mismanagment and inability to handle their job. They would use someone else as a scape goat and pretend they did all they could. It was highschool stuff.

As for my particular case, I was the bane of their existance apparently. I was rumoured to be out for Isas job because artists would go to me for support and she hated that. I was apparently trying to ruin things because I saw those cracks. Squeaky wheel and all that. I took the risks I did, i didn't care about being 'everyone's friend' or missed out on 'the connections' because I didn't want to play that game. Artists were feeling used, stolen from, and neglected. I spoke up, and many others started to feel safe to do so too. The more we shared stories (and man, there are HORROR stories) the more we realised that the inner workings of Hive were more tangled than we thought. Our years of organising lead us to approach the cartoonist co-op for extra help. We tried our best to do what we could for Hive to survive.

After we were hit with the 'actually we're in a quarter of a million in debt' and they wanted us to help financially (while owing artists and staff money) it was the curtain call for Hive as a company. Isa left the sinking ship previously to avoid responsibility, and Xel ghosted the rest of us. All of this is to say that these kinds of people who promise the world with your work and take advantage are such a common and frustrating thing in not only comics, but all creative avenues. And speaking up and against them is the only way to make these cycles stop.

Please support the artists who were affected by this. Please spread the word and speak up against people who use artists like this. Hiveworks is an example in a sea of greedy people who want our work to inflate their ego. Don't let them forget we can bite back, and without us, THEY are nothing.

For anyone who is curious why I bailed out of Hiveworks, please read this.

My particular experience is pretty mild comparatively, but it mattered very much to me, and I hold grudges. I'll put this under a cut because it's long.

tbh im not entirely immune to a villain with a tragic backstory but i do think villain origins are a lot more interesting when the focus is less "here is the original sin, the first big bad thing that happened to them that made them who they are" and more "here is the first time a person who maybe otherwise felt powerless in their life realized that they could hurt someone and get away with it"

you can get a lot more mileage out of analyzing a truly abhorrent character through the lens of like. what sort of conditions would allow or even incentivize this kind of cruelty? what kind of person benefits from those conditions and how? over the more typical who hurt them type analysis. imo.

Civil rights pioneer

Claudette Colvin, whose 1955 arrest for refusing to give up her seat on a segregated Montgomery bus helped spark the modern civil rights movement, has died. She was 86.

Her death was announced Tuesday by the Claudette Colvin Legacy Foundation. Ashley D. Roseboro of the organization confirmed she died in Texas.

Colvin was arrested months before Rosa Parks gained international fame before refusing to give up her seat on a segregated bus.
