happy birthday to the only video game ever
amashelle asked:
How do you mentally handle all the people in your notes going ‘isn’t this just XYZ?’ In ways that clearly indate they either haven’t read your post or only have a passing remembrance of what XYZ actually was?
I know sometimes you’ll post about how people are misinterpreting what you said, but only sometimes, and I don’t understand how you manage to hold back so often.
prokopetz answered:
The thing you have to understand is that a great many people on this site have Ready Player One brain. This operates on three principles:
- All communication is a form of intellectual combat.
- Anyone attempting to convey a piece of information you don’t already know is attacking you.
- You “win” against such an attack by reframing the thing you don’t know as a reference to something you’re already familiar with.
Once you realise that the overwhelming majority of the people playing the “this is just XZY” game cannot meaningfully be said to have misunderstood you because they’re simply not engaging with what you said at all, they can safely be ignored.
(Well, or blocked, if they’re sufficiently annoying about it. Treating wilful illiteracy as a block-on-sight offence can work wonders for making social media more tolerable!)
