astraldraco asked:

What are some of your favorite things about Baltimore? I'm planning to move to the area in a while, but I don't know anyone who's lived there, so I'm curious what things you love about it as a person who does!

(Feel free to ignore if that's too personal/gets into doxxing territory though!)

draconym answered:

No worries, I love talking about Baltimore. A lot of what I love about it is what I love about city living in general: diversity, a unique arts scene, walking and biking to stuff, social justice orgs, and a sizeable queer community with lots of events to go to.

Baltimore is a small city, both in geography and population, and that leads to the “smalltimore” phenomenon of “oh yeah I know that guy they’re in my friend’s band/softball team/polycule.” So you do get a little bit of a small town vibe, for better or worse. I like that about us.

And there’s crabs and lake trout and stuff but I’m a vegetarian so I don’t really care about that. But if you like seafood you’ll have a lot to choose from. I also don’t care about football but we DO have the best NFL mascot so at least wearing purple is normalized everywhere you go.

The city’s reputation for crime is pretty outdated. Violent crime is way down and most people you meet will be aggressively friendly to you. Politically we’re fairly left-leaning. Only 12% of voters in Baltimore city voted for Trump in 2024–though that percentage does go way up in several nearby areas just outside the city.

As for stuff that makes us, like, special: I think the Baltimore Rock Opera Society, Bike Party, kinetic sculpture race, historic ships in the harbor, National Aquarium, Artscape, and our tons of small nearby parks and nature sites are things I would be devastated to leave behind if I moved away. We also have a lot of unique museums: the Visionary Art Museum, Great Blacks in Wax, and the Museum of Industry just to name a few. We used to have Otakon, too, but they moved to DC. At least we still have the annual Faerie Festival nearby keeping it weird.

artscape rules :] its been a long time since i wrnt but i rlly rlly miss it i used to go every year!!! i can also second all those museums. the art museum is also p swanky i love the national harbor i miss the boats... theres also plenty of awesome food! you can get sm rlly good fish n chips theres some rlly cool farmers markets... and the surrounding suburbs have some neat stuff too! also if youre gay and like going out drinking or you like trivia nights theres plenty of stuff around!c check out club car if you want a bit more of an artsy vibe
