Not enough is made of the boys who took part in Beatlemania. There has been, rightfully, a push back recently against the narrative of the "hysteria" of the girl fans. We can understand the context that made their screams a necessary release and appreciate the contributions they made, the communities they formed through fan clubs and magazines. We know better than the old story that the girls were just crazy and horny and the boy fans were the ones who were seriously into the music. But inversely, the boys who acted crazy are dismissed or overlooked, treated like wild, occasional exceptions. That's not what I see what I watch footage of the fans. I see boys rushing the stage. I see boys jumping in droves in the Amsterdam canals and sobbing when they're pulled out without getting their hands on the Beatles. I look at the crowds running after them and I see almost as many boys as girls.
Justice for the mad horny Beatlemaniac boys. I need people tracking them down and getting their stories now before it's too late!

1965: John is asked if the Beatles are close backstage, and John says "there might be two of them who sort of go off and are friends, you know..." before adding "strictly platonic, of course", after George asked him what he meant.

1994: Marianne Faithfull compared Keith and Mick's bond to John and Paul, saying it had "all the irrationally and passion of a love affair", noted that both groups had "bisexual managers" (Epstain and Oldham), and pointed out that the "blurring of sexual lines" and the "homoerotic subculture" was part of the creative mix of the time.
2004: Tony Barrow says that at the back of John's mind there was always that desire to "get back with the first girlfriend."

Me. I will sit on high-speed rail for fifteen hours. I’ll sit on it for days. I’ll write and read and nap and eat and then do it all over again. I’ll stare out the windows and see America from ground level and not have to drive. I’ll see the Rockies and the deserts and cornfields and the Mississippi River and your house and yours and yours too. I’ll make up stories in my head about the small towns I see as we go along. I’ll see the states I’ve yet to see because driving or flying there is a fucking slog and expensive to boot. I’ll enjoy the ride as much as the destination. And then I’ll do it all over again to come the fuck home.

Americans will drive 15 hours, why the hell wouldn't we take a 15 hour train ride.
Make the trains comfortable for disabled and fat people. Make private compartments more affordable. Make the food in the dining car better. Then maybe I will travel long-distance on a train again. Because I've tried it, and it's currently Very Bad. And it doesn't have to be. But it currently is. So, the presence of a train is not enough; fix those problems, THEN I will try again. Until then I'm taking a road trip, because currently that is the only accessible safe way for me to travel long-distance.
