Vanessa, 35 🇺🇸 Wife and Mama :) Way too many fandoms to name

SJM fans who go "It's just fiction." when you point out a flaw in her writing are a pain in the ass. When a author wants to write about fantasy, they'll take things from REAL LIFE to put into their stories. There are authors out there who will write their ideologies into their books and SJM is one of them.

Feyre dismantling the spring court out of petty revenge? Colonization.

The inner circle not allowing ANYONE from hewn city to enter Velaris and if they did, they would be treated horribly? Segregation.

SJM describing her POC as not striking, not beautiful compared to her main characters? Racism.

Hybern being based on Ireland and Prythian being based on Britian? The portrayal and demonization of Celtic culture? Do you know what the other name for anti-Irish sentiment is? Hibernophobia. That is a one letter difference.

"Hybern's geography closely resembles that of Ireland, while Pryhtian resembles Britain. Sarah J. Maas took inspiration from both countries to create the two locations." That's from the trivia section of the wiki page for Hybern.

The fae enslaving humans for hundreds of years? And Rhys has the audacity to say both sides are wrong.

I AM NOT AT FAULT FOR POINTING OUT THESE KIND OF THINGS. FANTASY CAN BE AND IS A REFLECTION OF REAL LIFE!

"Nesta was a terrible sister!"

No, she was a terrible parent to Feyre, but that's because a twelve-year-old isn't supposed to step into the rule of parent.

All the reasons people hate Nesta for being a horrid sister are really roles the parents should have been fulfilling.

Nesta's cruel to Feyre? Feyre literally starts off the series sleeping with an engaged man. She doesn't have room to talk.

Nesta insults Feyre? All siblings do. Get over it.

Nesta called Feyre stinky? All siblings do. Get over it.

Nesta threatened to kill Feyre? All siblings do. Get over it.

Nesta never protected Feyre? At least she protected Elain. Who did Elain ever protect? No one. And it's not like Feyre ever protected Nesta either.

I swear Feyre stans don't have siblings because every sibling group I know has said far worse things to each other than Nesta has said to Feyre.

And let's not forget that Feyre wanted to have Rhysand use his daemati to mind-control her sisters to force them to do what Feyre wanted. That's not exactly "good sister" territory.

People want to say that Nesta's a useless character and that the most memorable part of her book was Cassian telling her to grab the headboard, but she's Made three magical weapons. Even more, she's the first person in 15,000 years to do so. That's pretty remarkable and not something that a useless character would do.

The problem is that people look over the fact that Nesta Made the weapons and they go into, "Now that Rhys has Made weapons..." No. Now that Nesta has Made weapons, which are sentient and answer to her and her alone, what will she do with them?

Mischaracterisation of Nesta Archeron (Part 1?)

Nesta doesn’t see through any of the ICs bullshit. The reason she distances herself physically and with words is because she puts them on this insane pedestal while seeing herself as pure shit, so she doesn’t like being around them because they make her feel insecure, self-hateful, and unworthy.

A lot of people, specifically Nesta stans, think she’s some truther who is bound to call out the IC on their shit but she’s much more likely to fall into line and kiss their ass because she believes she’s the only one who made/makes mistakes and she yearns for their approval. She felt shame when Mor didn’t smile at her, thinks Rhys is a completely honourable man and good leader, and she feels shame for being the one blackmailed by her sister (when she was going to leave without the money and just didn’t want to lose her home again so she accepted it). She’ll end up believing all the arguments and problems with the IC are all her fault because she can’t see them doing anything wrong.

She said Rhys showed her “nothing but kindness” when he used his magic to hold her down/make her submit to him at her own mental health intervention, and had amusement in his eyes as she struggled beneath him 🫩 (Why rhys was even there is a rant for another day)

I love Nesta, but all she ever wanted was to be accepted and loved by the IC, not to bring any light to their hypocrisies or be a rebel to their dynamic. It saddens me that she still thinks she has to fight to earn their love, as if she isn’t deserving enough of it given how much she’s tried, trying, and willing to keep trying in the future.

In about 99% of the romantasies I read, the mmc is cold and cruel and treats the fmc like shit until he starts to acknowledge his feelings for her. Or course, the mmc doesn't need to change to be loved by the fmc, and she grows to love him despite his coldness and cruelty because women love to be the exception in a man's life.

But when Nesta is cold and cruel and supposedly treats Cassian like shit until she starts to acknowledge her feelings for him, she needs to change herself to be loved by the mmc, who cannot love her despite her coldness and cruelty because women don't want to read about a man being the exception in a woman' life.

A cold, cruel mmc deserves love and happiness and a happily ever after, yet a cold, cruel fmc deserves to be abused, raped, mistreated, tortured, and dismembered to prove that she's not a good person.

"I despise the gods, Saeris. I'm Oath Bound by the land and the blood of kings. I swore I would never offer up a word of gratitude to them again, but you have made a liar of me. You're a gift that cannot be ignored. My heart..." He swallowed, giving a tiny shake of his head. "I've killed more people than I can count. I lost the parts of myself that knew how to feel anything other than pain and sorrow centuries ago. But for better or worse, you have brought me back to life."

kudos to callie hart for giving her main character an animal sidekick because I desperately need more authors to start doing this in fantasy books. bring back the disney-princessification of protagonists in 2026. I want them all running around on adventures with chameleons or cats or miniature dragons
