i just know the margles orb goes crazy
what is THE worst thing you've ever drank. all liquids acceptable. please tell me what it was, bonus points for why
Hey whoa hi. Hello. I am looking directly into your ear canal. What do you mean you drank a tube of virus concentrate.
So, I was working in a lab, right? My job in the lab was preparing a pure, concentrated enough sample of virus. This is tricky since, y'know, viruses require hosts to replicate, but you then need to get the host cells (and the pieces of the host cells that died!) out of the sample while still keeping the viruses. Once I'd finished and the samples had been sent to the database for analysis as well as a second one sent to be frozen for future reference, there was still some left over that needed to be disposed of.
I, knowing that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, waited carefully for the lab director to be deep in conversation with someone else on the other side of the laboratory. And then I took my chance.
Test tubes, as it turns out, are really bad as shot glasses. Their shape turns any liquid inside into a stream, so you really can't knock it back quickly - it takes a couple seconds. Additionally, the best way I can describe the taste of virus concentrate was "sterile rot". A very unique kind of bad! Made worse by the test tube's inefficiency as a shot glass.
(by the way we were studying bacteriophages, not animal viruses. these viruses are too specialized on attacking prokaryotes to even recognize our cells as targets at all, according to studies.)
(but also like. if the viruses managed to successfully switch hosts and killed me with a violent infection, itd still be worth it.)
(for science.)
You have a fitting blog title

Updates from Iran
Some major updates from people in Iran and leaks:
- While the official number of deaths is stated to be between 2,000-3,000, people estimate that the actual number of deaths is estimated to be at least 12,000. Videos show bodies all over the streets and body bags just lying on the ground.
- Doctors are reporting being overwhelmed by the casualties.
- The regime is trying to arrest injured protesters in the hospital.
- The regime is charging money to return the bodies of murdered protesters to their families. (This practice is already disgusting, but imagine charging money at their rates in Iran's current economic status when people can barely afford bread.)
- People are reporting that people from the regime's affiliates and proxy groups in the region have already been brought in to help with the suppression.
- Messages being sent from Iran are saying that curfews are being enforced and that the regime's forces, including these proxies, are shooting indiscriminately at will.
- Executions will really start tomorrow.
- The regime is doing whatever it can to cut off people from the world. It's very difficult for people to contact family in Iran. There is still an internet blackout.
- Despite this, there is still some footage coming out that people are still willing to risk it all and fight.
This is a humanitarian crisis. The people of Iran need your support more than ever. Amplify their voices, and don't let the regime get away with its crimes in darkness. Hold your governments and media to account to make sure that they support the people of Iran and not support the regime.
All eyes on Iran.
The problem with the IHRA definition of antisemitism is that it prohibits criticisms of Israel. Like how genocide should be redefined for the Gaza War because the definition was too narrow
"fuck israel i hope all those zios die" is not a criticism of israel, it's just antisemitic lol. and that is the kind of rhetoric that the IHRA defined as antisemitism.
what is antisemitic:
- Calling for, aiding, or justifying the killing or harming of Jews in the name of a radical ideology or an extremist view of religion.
- Making mendacious, dehumanizing, demonizing, or stereotypical allegations about Jews as such or the power of Jews as collective — such as, especially but not exclusively, the myth about a world Jewish conspiracy or of Jews controlling the media, economy, government or other societal institutions.
- Accusing Jews as a people of being responsible for real or imagined wrongdoing committed by a single Jewish person or group, or even for acts committed by non-Jews.
- Denying the fact, scope, mechanisms (e.g. gas chambers) or intentionality of the genocide of the Jewish people at the hands of National Socialist Germany and its supporters and accomplices during World War II (the Holocaust).
- Accusing the Jews as a people, or Israel as a state, of inventing or exaggerating the Holocaust.
- Accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel, or to the alleged priorities of Jews worldwide, than to the interests of their own nations.
- Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor.
- Applying double standards by requiring of it a behavior not expected or demanded of any other democratic nation.
- Using the symbols and images associated with classic antisemitism (e.g., claims of Jews killing Jesus or blood libel) to characterize Israel or Israelis.
- Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.
- Holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel.
#antisemitism#the IHRA definition is extremely reasonable and the degree to which it is being demonized is horrifying4
Yeah. It's being demonized because it gets in the way of antisemites harassing, intimidating, discriminating against, hurting and otherwise being racist to Jews. And they hate that.
This might be the most “too online” thing I have ever typed, but: if you’re saying “it was promised to them 3000 years ago!” today, I think it’ll be sooner rather than later that you’ll be saying “six gorillian”, if you’re not doing it already
It is, of course the height of irony that the people saying “promised to them 3000 years ago” derogatorily are probably also the sort of people to claim they can’t be antisemitic because Zionism and Judaism are different things, while mocking a religious belief of Judaism that Zionism isn’t based on (Zionism is based on the Levant being the ethnic homeland of the Jewish people, not the religious belief that G-d promised what is now Israel to the Jews. There are a lot of people who hold both beliefs, but they are not the same).
"The local deity wanted us to live here" is, perhaps, the single most common cultural understanding of one's own ethnogenisis in the world.
But when it's Jews, suddenly this nigh-boilerplate story becomes somehow suspicious.

Shinto holds that Amaterasu has an exclusive, special relationship with the land and people of Japan, with the imperial line being directly descended from her. The claim is that the sun—the goddam sun!—has a special relationship only with this island chain and no other.
Tibetan Buddhism holds that Tibetans are the chosen people of Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig), of whom the Dalai Lama is an incarnation, making Tibet the holy land of Tibetan Buddhism. Early in his exile, the Dalai Lama literally invited rabbis to come share advice about how to survive in exile from your holy land.
And even Islam holds that Arabic and only Arabic is the chosen language for the final revelation of the creator of the cosmos to share with humanity. If you don’t speak Arabic, you literally will always be cut off from a full relationship with the ultimate source of all things.
Those examples are just pulled from major religions. None of these things are uncommon!

every single day I think about how american black vultures are known for engaging in interspecific allopreening (preening between different species)
and they have a specific relationship with crested caracaras, in which the black vultures assist them by not only preening them after meals but also leading them to food in the first place, while the caracaras assist the black vultures by acting as a warning signal in case of danger
and while this is more typical of black vultures, this is not common at all for any member of the falconidae family— it’s a special bond!
yet another post in favor of vultures everyone , hope you enjoy:) and I implore you to do some more research on these incredible birds !!
EDIT: I meant interspecific allopreening! excuse my typo!
EDIT 2: black vultures do not have a superior sense of smell to caracaras, sorry for the misunderstanding!
A video showing the young Iranian Mali Imani singing in the street has garnered millions of views on social media and has become one of the symbols of protest against the Ayatollah regime. In Iran, women are forbidden to sing in public, and violating this ban can lead to arrest and punishment.
The emotional moment, filmed about two years ago, was reposted on her Instagram page and since the outbreak of the protests has gone viral, already accumulating nearly 30 million views.
Mali described the moment and said, "This is one of the best moments of my life." She described how the whistle heard at the end of the video, which stops her singing, almost caused her to have a heart attack - hint of the approach of the morality police or security forces.
