I have the baseless headcanon that Mary Poppins is Maleficent.

Maleficent reforms sometime in the fourteenth century, greatly reduced. She wanders the countryside in the shape of a harridan, another bogeyman to warn children of.

The peasantry - who remember Maleficent as the fey who inexplicably sent her minions to inspect every cradle in the kingdom - think that she is another of these goblins.

They call her La Mauvaise Paysanne.

***

She arrives in England in the eighteenth century on the back of a fairy tale.

Fairies take the shape of the stories told about them. The myth has changed, and so has she. She takes the shape of an enchantress, the punisher of naughty children, the rewarder of the good.

The English people call her the Merry Peasant.

***

By the nineteenth century, the edges of her myth have been sanded off entirely. She’s known as a fairy godmother who blesses good children.

She doesn’t mind this, but when she gets the chance to reshape her wand, she gives it a crow’s head in memory of her old familiar.

They’ve started calling her Mary Pauper.

***

By the twentieth century, Mary Poppins is more powerful than she’s been in centuries.

She’s also changed completely. She understands this to her core, and mostly she’s fine with it.

She misses it every now and then, of course. The palace, the minions, the mistress of all evil. She sniffs and says these are are ridiculous thoughts, but she thinks them nevertheless.

This is partly why she enjoys being a nanny. It’s a good compromise. She can be strict but fair with her charges, and every now and then she meets a particularly incorrigible parent who she can curse into oblivion.

meanwhile the irony of all the speculation and pressure around the heated rivalry actors’ sexualities is not at all lost on me. like you have a book series and then a tv show adaptation where “coming out is an active threat to your livelihood, which is precarious on the best of days and you will realistically only have said livelihood for like twenty years if everything goes ridiculously well” AND “even if you personally as a public figure are comfortable and willing to take the risk of coming out, you have to consider the impact of that kind of pressure and speculation on your loved ones, including your partner, who will have little shot of anonymity or privacy ever again, before you take that step” are MAJOR THEMES and people take that and go “so why aren’t these public figures who just want to do their jobs telling me every detail of the private lives??” Well, see, you’re not gonna believe this but

I personally am cautious of BMWs and other expensive cars and out-of-town plates any make/model especially in may/sept/jan because that's when New People move here and cannot handle either bikes or the roads/traffic

Owls confirmed to be the creepiest birds ever. LOOK AT THE FUCKING THINGS. If you fail to notice the one on the left fucking SWALLOWING a rat, then you have the dude singing some satanic chant or something next to him, and then you have those two other fucking psychos synchronized to make you feel creeped the fuck out with their soulless dance of FUCKING DOOM.

if i was weird al i would do a version of "we didn't start the fire" that starts off like it's just another hackneyed modernization of the song, except once it hits the present day it just keeps going. so verse 1 is like "GEORGE BUSH / WORLD TRADE / WAR ON TERROR / GREEN DAY" but by verse 6 it's like "MARTIAN INVASION / ROBO-STALIN BACK AGAIN / NEO BRAZIL FROZEN OVER / PLUS THE MOON BLEW UP." you might think "but kit, wouldn't the song wind up being extremely long" but that's the brilliant part- the tempo still increases with every verse. the song ends when weird al passes out

controversial opinion but. jin guangyao does everything he does in canon in hopes of finally securing an unshakeable and safe position in society, in which he is not treated like shit, looked down upon, and he no longer has to claw desperately and kiss ass of people he hates to get basic respect. yes unfortunately this does snowball out of control and into "hey thats super fucked up, you ever heard of the sunk cost fallacy?" territory.

therefore i do not think a modern au jgy would be inherently duplicitous nor a big villain. depending on how you write him, or where you write him (i.e. diaspora in a culture without strong filial piety) he may not even give a shit about his father. in a modern world where his standing is not so dependent upon who his parents are, he could very well just be a regular, non-villainous dude who gets weirdly kira-like about rusong's school board or an HOA or office politics.

and tbh i think thats way more interesting than reading yet another modern au where you just know jgy's character for some reason is going to be a treasonous turncoat who cannot be trusted, thus negating any possible sense of interest or suspense in his character's presence/plotline.

hmm
