I think the types of oppression that are the most intense are the ones that apply to me personally. For some reason they’re just so much more visceral and personally affecting than the ones that don’t affect me, which all seem distant and abstract and not as big a deal. If you don’t restructure your worldview around this I will decide you’re part of the problem.
Talking about the oppression you face is a distraction from efforts to fix the problems I face as the main character of the universe, which means you are just another oppressor.
sometimes i think about gay people who lived centuries ago who thought they were all alone who imagined a world where they could live openly as themselves who met in secret spoke in code defied everything and everyone just to exist and i’m like..i gotta sit down. whew i gotta sit down
this is why this sappho fragment hits me so hard
If this little book should see the light after its 100 years of entombment, I would like its readers to know that the author was a lover of her own sex and devoted the best years of her life in striving for the political equality and social and moral elevation of women.
“The Great Geysers of California” by Laura De Force Gordon, 1879, unearthed from a 100-year-old time capsule in San Francisco, 1979.
“Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all our letters could be published in the future in a more enlightened time. Then all the world could see how in love we are.”
Look, you guys gotta stop saying shit like this on all of my skeptic posts. You can’t tell someone “of course it’s okay to believe in things, as long as you never let it affect your behavior in any way and also you admit it’s not actually true.”
Stand up, accept that you are one of those “mean” skeptics, and tell people to stop believing in shit that isn’t real with your whole chest. Stop doing whatever this wishy-washy nonsense is. People who read their horoscope or collect crystals for fun don’t need to be told that it’s not real and people who genuinely think crystals cure cancer and geminis are deceitful don’t need to be patted on the head and told “it’s okay to ~believe~ in things!”
Interesting how tumblr liberal ‘totally not atheists’ utterly refuse to comprehend that many people actually BELIEVE their beliefs. Like, theyve got this idea that all religious, spiritual, or woo beliefs are just, what, LARP? Culture and aesthetic and identity utterly disconnected to belief.
It’s like the whole thing secular jumblr does about religion having nothing to do with belief and everything to do with ethnicicty and culture (itself an absurd overstatement that frankly doesn’t apply to a lot of Judaism much less anyone else), but filtered through a game of telephone and broadened to basically any belief.
'You atheists are so dumb, of COURSE everyone considers their spiritual beliefs to be nothing more than metaphor, aesthetic, and LARP, why are you acting like anyone BELIEVES?’
It’s been said before but “ugh, you atheists are so stupid that you don’t even realize that nobody ACTUALLY believes all that mumbo-jumbo nonsense, you just think they do because you think all non-white cultures are backwards savages” is uhhhhhhhh SIGNIFICANTLY more offensive than anything most atheists are saying
