My well-loved, waterlogged copy of Roy Orbison’s Greatest Hits… this premature and QUICKLY outdated best of came in 1962, just a year before In Dreams and two before Oh Pretty Woman! Still, it’s a lovely collection of early ‘60s pop—a whole lot of doo-wop, carefully sanitized R&B, but most importantly that gigantic, operatic voice of Roy’s. If you’re looking for cinematic ballads about love gone wrong, there was no one like him.

This is my favourite Yeah Yeah Yeahs album—not their best, their most essential, their biggest classic, but the one that will always mean the most to me. I got the CD at their show in 2006 shortly after its release, which was only my third ever concert. My future husband came down to my university to go with me to it, so for a slew of reasons it became one of my favourite ever shows. I listened to this CD over and over that fall and winter, my first on my own away from home, so it’s forever tied to one of the happiest times of my life. Also it slaps?

Just got the vinyl over Christmas… I didn’t even know they’d re-pressed it, I was pleasantly surprised to find it in the bins!

Vinyl records are circular because it’s an efficient use of space: the grooves that encode the music are laid out in a spiral on the disc, so that the needle only has to move as far as the disc’s radius to read the entire thing. Before this clever idea was thought of, the grooves were instead laid out in a straight line, and every LP was a narrow rectangle more than a thousand feet long. To flip an album to side b at least two people were needed, one at each end, coordinating via shouted instructions.

Been in a metal place lately, so I had to finally pick up this exquisite example of progressive death metal. Psychedelic and spacey with some out-there mythology. The contrasting slow bits remind me of Opeth, which is one of the best things a metal band can do imo ;)

I bring sort of a ‘peasants of the past were not as debased, uneducated and dirty as a lot of pesudo-medieval fiction makes them out to be but this new wave of attempting to sweep the very real indentured servitude, corporal ownership, poverty and lack of basic human rights under the rug isn’t achieving what you think it’s achieving’ vibe to the party that people don’t really like
