about
Rising rock duo SpaceAcre make a powerful statement with their brand new track “Why We Left”, a thunderous juggernaut of a song about greed, power and corruption. Perfectly timed as Elon Musk is branded “pathetic” by pop star Billie Eilish for nearing trillionaire status, the song tackles these themes against a backdrop of dark, menacing production and huge riffs. Coming in at under two-minutes long, it’s an astonishing and impactful declaration from one of the UK’s most outspoken new acts.
In protest at Spotify’s treatment of musicians, SpaceAcre are removing their entire catalogue to date – with the exception of “Why We Left” – from the streaming platform. Their decision comes as a number of other artists, including Massive Attack and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, do the same.
“Some people think we’re insane, as an up-and-coming band, to be doing this, but we need to stand up for what we believe in,” SpaceAcre's Phoebe Little and Jas Scott explain.
“‘Why We Left’ is a message to the billionaires, specially Daniel Ek, the executive chair of Spotify. The company’s practices have become more and more unethical for artists and users and we no longer want to be a part of their toxic corporate machine.
“It started with the fact that they pay most artists virtually nothing – even asking them to pay for ads in the hope their music reaches more Spotify users.
“More recently they’ve introduced a policy that demands a minimum number of streams before artists can accrue any royalties, all while AI artists and music are flooding the platform. Now, Ek is taking the money he’s made from all of this and has been investing it in AI warfare. Enough is enough.”
lyrics
“Hey, it’s us. You won’t find us here anymore. The unethical nature of this beast has gone too far this time. Things are changing. We will no longer be cogs in your machine or weapons that you wield. We see what you really are. And the world? Well, it’s about to wake up.”
Your dividends
We don’t consent
The sinister convenience
Kill apathy
Your toxic purse
Distorted bad
And made it worse
Heavy is a heart
Etched in gold
Your burnished soul
Makes blood and dust
Ash and bone
You’re etched in gold
This album is a sonic adventure into possibilities with instruments that are beyond what I originally thought them capable of. Pure delight and mood. myyrjo
As a retired cellist this album brings back some good memories and some bad ones.
