ICE is coming to a city near you: things you should know from a tumblrina on the ground in the twin cities

i know i am usually pretty hehe haha on this app and here to generally mess around and have fun about television however, the circumstances of the last few weeks in my city and state have been truly so dire that it feels impossible to even pretend like that is an option right now. and i like to help so here is what i know:

yesterday, january 12th, border patrol commander greg bovino gave a very weird interview to the minnesota CBS affiliate WCCO, in which he lied repeatedly but importantly noted that once they “[get] bad things off the streets, we’re off to the next city.” we have seen increased immigration enforcement since day 1 of the new trump administration with many cities pushing back against operations already but, as what has been highly reported, nothing as large as the scale of the current operation in MN. plus with the pushback they have received here, these freak individuals will certainly have new motivation to incite violence wherever they go. use this as a little cheat sheet to prepare yourself for when it is your turn or, to jump in to the action rn and help out our immigrant communities in MN.

WHAT MN IS DOING TO PROTECT OUR NEIGHBORS

    • following ICE vehicles, observing their arrests and interactions with the public <- this is obviously not without risk. many people are being harassed, physically injured, tear gassed & pepper sprayed, arrested, and as we know, killed when doing this. however, it is still the most useful tactic in intervening with these operations.
    • donating, collecting, and distributing food & household necessities for vulnerable families so they don’t have to leave their home. there are some incredible operations going on in the twin cities and the surrounding suburbs in order to get this done. if you want to help minnesotans i’d recommend looking into the work of places like smitten kitten, wrecktangle pizza, the immigrant defense network, MIRAC, and MN ice watch. if i were in a vulnerable city (aka blue state) i’d start thinking about groups, organizations, churches etc in your area that could run similar networks and prepare stockpiling donations.
    • businesses are operating with reduced (or even fully closed) hours to protect patrons and staff. many have signs in their storefront windows indicating that ICE can not enter. the one i linked is from etsy however organizations in your area will likely have them for free.
    • finding out which hotels (usually near a major airport) agents are staying at and protesting all night long being loud as fuck. + boycotting these hotels in the future
    • 3D printing whistles! using these whistles in order to alert when ICE is near.
    • building online networks and systems to notify of ICE’s whereabouts. NOTE! ICE is using cell phone location data to track & identify people!!!! use your best judgment, be smart, & turn your location OFF!

notes for VULNERABLE/UNDOCUMENTED PEOPLE and their families

    • get an action plan in place. i know it sucks to talk and think about. i know it is unfair but figure out worst case scenarios and what to do in them. even if you’ve been here for decades and have felt relatively safe in that time, i do suggest communicating with family and making a plan regardless.
    • for PROTECTING MINORS: in minnesota we have something called a delegation of parental authority (DOPA). this is a notarized legal document that delegates the authority and care of minor for one year if their parent or legal guardian can not. i would highly suggest looking into the steps of declaring parental authority in your own state and starting the process asap. (it is relatively easy here in mn! you just need to have one parent present to sign the document and get it notarized)
    • prepare as best you can for time off work, a lot of time spent in the house. get little stuff done like tabs for your car renewed, any insurance issues taken care of, doctor’s appointments done etc. start talking with your church or immigrant organizations in your area about getting supplies delivered to your home when needed.
    • PEOPLE WANT TO HELP! they really do. i know it is so fucking terrifying but there are so many people who do want the best for everyone in their community. if you need help please ask for it.

other general notes: they’re arresting literally anyone in MN, citizen or not. they’re harassing kids at school (minneapolis schools have allowed for children to learn from home until february 12th). they’re arresting people at work. it does not matter. a lot of people here are carrying their passports and other documentation to avoid this. you don’t have to give anyone your identification even when asked but unfortunately many who refuse have been met with violence. they’re going into hospitals, homes, schools, businesses and they don’t have warrants. of course know your rights but be aware they really don’t give a fuck. they’re arresting first and asking questions later.

most importantly people working for ICE and border patrol have something deeply wrong with them. they’re disgusting, immoral people whose “work” will be a stain on their lives and this country until the end of time. and i can not stress this enough, they are so fucking stupid. they are not stronger than us. they are not smarter than us. they are not more righteous or justified in any of their actions and eventually the day will come that their most prized leader turns on them, dies, or both. they will never be forgiven.

with that i leave you with two videos of agents eating shit on the ice that i can’t stop watching. fucking pussies.

    love ya. be safe

More things you can do to help your neighbors are:

    - Distribute material with know your rights information and scripts for people to read through their door (such as red cards)

    - Add your local ICE spotting hotline to your phone address book (or bookmark/download if it’s a website or app)

    - Offer to go to the grocery store, pharmacy, or laundromat for people so they can stay in their homes

    - Gather people to patrol the perimeter of public school grounds during pickup and drop-off each day

    - Support immigrant-owned businesses & offer to guard the door while you are there

    - Check in on people for emotional support on a regular basis

ICE is ramping up presence in Maine because we have a large Somali population, so if you’re in the area please consider donating to the Maine Solidarity Fund! They’ve been providing direct aid to people throughout the state and they have more requests than they can fill.

real quick if anyone is confused: professional athletes are paid a lot of money because they generate a lot of money. if you believe that professional athletes should not be paid a proportional share of the revenue they generate, you are anti worker’s rights and also fundamentally do not understand how labor works

like hey. im a communist. i am not arguing for rich people. i am arguing for workers to get paid what they are worth for the labor they perform. athletes being paid a lot of money is not a hill you have to die on. it is not a consideration you should be incorporating into your political and economic policy. athletes are not special, they are workers, and if you say “this worker does not deserve to be paid what they are owed” you are anti labor and you should not be trusted under any circumstances.

also like. arguing that white male athletes should not be adequately compensated for their labor is really not the leftist win you think it is when wnba players get 9% of the leagues revenue and pwhl players are forced to work second jobs. if you think the recognizable names of major men’s sports shouldn’t be compensated, what do you think about workers rights for bench players and 4th liners in women’s sports who are paid astronomically less?

These athletes’ bodies are eaten whole and spit out in pieces to generate trillions of dollars of revenue. They’d better be getting paid a chunk of it

Remember that if you want to do more of something, you have to do less of something else. It’s that time of year where people set goals for the new year and they have plans and hopes and it’s always focusing on what they want to do more of. More studying, more exercise, more crafting, more socialising, more making things from scratch. Okay, great. What are you going to do less of in order to have the time and energy to do more of those things you really want to do?

And if your answer to this is “less doomscrolling” or “less bedrotting” then great, but please think about why you’re doing those things. No one’s doomscrolling or bedrotting because they don’t have things they’d rather be doing. Actually, I’m willing to bet you have a lot of things you’d rather be doing and you spend your life internally screaming at yourself to do literally any one of the many things you want to be doing instead, but you don’t have the energy for them all and you can’t work out how to prioritize them, so doomscrolling spares you from making that decision. Or perhaps you’re burned out from taking on too many projects and you need to rest your brain, so you lie in bed because you don’t even have the energy to get started anymore.

This is going to be a really hard pill to swallow, but the truth is you might not be able to balance all your hobbies and all your projects the way you’d like. If you want to finish writing that book, you might have to reduce your daily drawing habit to a couple of times a week. If you want to do yoga every morning, you might have to accept not cooking from scratch as often. If you want to spend more time with your family, you might have to cut down on your yearly reading goal. I’m not saying give up on your hobbies; I’m be realistic with your time and your energy and be kind to yourself. Stop expecting yourself to do more and do better every single year. You don’t have to constantly be growing upwards and reaching for the stars; you can be content with where you are, or even cut parts of yourself back to make space for other things in your life to bloom.

Think about what your priorities are and make peace with doing less of other things. Less is okay. Less is not failing. Less is self care.

ok my white ahh absolutely does this but it’s 1000% for comedy purposes. Censorship is bad when it’s done from necessity but sometimes making goofy ass into goofy ahh is slightly funnier

it’s not funny. I hope this helps.

they pronounced her dead and tried to give her a proper burial 😭 this must have been terrifying in the moment but that’s a little sweet and a little funny, I’m glad she made it out unscathed

This is so… idk. It’s really fascinating that they do that and the implications for animals’s capacity to feel empathy are huge.

I just can’t get out of my mind how badly an elephant will FUCK YOU UP if they’re angry at you. Like if you try to walk up to one, they can get defensive and will fight you. Only it’s not a fight.

Like, I think they’re justified most of the time. But it’s a fascinating range of emotions for one type of animal to have.

I think we have a skewed view of elephants in the west since most of the famous stories of them that pass into pop culture are circus elephants that killed their handlers or elephants that charged European safari hunters. You should never approach a wild animal but generally speaking, they only harm humans when humans are attempting to harm them or their herd. They’re social creatures like dogs, horses and cows so they bond with others well and pose little risk to those who they consider community members which is why humans have tried to domesticate them for 4,500 years with some success.

    image

TL;DR: Elephants usually only fuck you up when you’re trying to fuck them up and they’re capable of bonding with humans and seeing them as intelligent and capable beings.

It was weird for me to sit in a room full of dykes and watch them listen respectfully while FTMs talked about wanting to cut off their tits. But when the handful of MTFs who had come to the workshop dared to speak out, the hostility toward them was palpable. FTMs take male hormones so they can look as masculine as possible. They wear penile prosthesis in their pants and crossdress. Most of them would have surgery to give themselves penises if they could afford it and the surgery could create a fully functional male sex organ. Why do these folks qualify as “leatherdykes” when MTFs don’t? MTFs take female hormones, love their tits, often undergo painful surgery to create female genitals, and live full-time as females and as dykes. It made absolutely no sense to me that FTMS were welcome at power surge when MTFs were not.

straight up it should be illegal for a physical storefront not to accept physical currency, or for restaurants not to provide physical menus

I’m assuming the above is a normie opinion (as it should be) so i do wanna go a tiny step further and explicitly state any laundromat that requires digital payment should be burned to the fucking ground

if a business cooerces its customers to download an app, i should legally be allowed to set both the business and its board of directors on fire

The assumption that every single business, or service, is owed your personal data, and should be able to track you and mercilessly spam you and monetise the ability to sell off your contact details and so on it’s absolutely deranged.

I have flashlights that are borderline unusable because, while the hardware is fine, the company that made them (hello OLight!) demands that you install and login to the storefront before you can access the configuration software.

But they don’t actively maintain the software or provide any of the new utilities that they promise. They are mostly using it as a way to turn off functional hardware to try and force you to upgrade.

We are living in a society where you can pay for something and the manufacturer can turn it off because they’ve decided that you’ve owned it too long .

I’ve just had to warn my family not to buy electronic door locks because the chances are, if they are Internet connected they will be disabled once the company that owns them has decided that they’re not making enough money charging you a monthly fee to open your own front door.

This is part of an ongoing trend to turn money into something that is no longer usable by everybody .

The eventual aim is to be able to pay people company scrip: If you lose your job, or badmouth the company, or disagree with the dictator, they severely curtail what you are allowed to buy, and from who.

And at that point, you have to pick sides – do you want to be able to have drinking water from Coca-Cola, or Pepsi, and whose package allows you to buy Doritos, and use your smart oven to cook food? Because it won’t turn on unless you use the app to scan the appropriate barcode from the company who now owns your ability to eat drink, heat your home, and wear clothes from brands that they approve.

And if you think that Bezos wouldn’t do that or run his own ghetto where employees have to use Amazon brands and be paid in Amazon money… You haven’t been paying attention to what he’s been building lately.
