Any Other Games Like This?
I found this game to be one of those unfortunate ones like tetris attack where there is just nothing else like it with regard to gameplay- one of a kind. And unfortunately, much like warhammer 40k soulstorm, the developer (Infinity Interactive now "Infinity Plus Two") has proven they have no idea why the first game was successful, given their latest idiotic attempt at a sequel- Puzzle Quest 3. I literally just want the same game mechanics with more content, better graphics, and no micro-transactions or currency BS and I'm pretty sure others want the same, and apparently that just too difficult for them to do.

Consequently, I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any very similar games. I heard HuniePop has similar-ish mechanics allegedly but bluntly- you would have to pay me to play that. Any suggestions? Any "hidden gem" Match 3 Games out there?

Update 7/10/25
Tried out some suggestions.
1. MatchR. Actually very close. Different characters with different abilities and perks and stickers for strategy. Unfortunately, however, there is not much spell diversity. While there are builds and the game is fun, you’ve seen it all in a short amount of time.
2. Dungeon Wizard. This is a surprisingly good game in the skin of a crappy one. Builds, variety, strategy, kind of addicting. That said, it is a fundamentally different kind of matching game, more akin to a payline on a slot machine, so it’s kind of disqualified to me, but I do advise checking it out.

Sadly, no. Everything else seems to be an imitator that misses the point or tries to get "micro" on you. The closest things I found was Gems of War but it's P2W and full of cheap BS to tempt you to pay.

Maybe puzzle and dragon's releases on DS for a similar feel. I feel that "You must build a boat" is a good release in this genre on steam.

10,000,000 is fun (same developer as you must build a boat)

Not sure it's a "hidden gem" but Bejeweled 3 is pretty much the best match 3 game out there.

What we need is PuzzleQuest: Challenge of the Warlords II. Make it happen!

Hiya! Questions for folks saying there's nothing like this/other games miss the point:

1. What would you like to see in such a game?
2. What would you *not* want?
3. What is the "point" that must not be missed?

Asking for . . . reasons. :leaSmug:

Pft. Sure why not. That said it would be better if you played it and understood rather than taking the word of others, if you have not. A lack of passion for what you are potentially creating will show.

That said, I suppose I might as well gush about this title for a moment. I’m not going to go bullet by bullet though.

The Good:
What makes Puzzle Quest CtW truly unique and special with regard to match 3 is that it has “builds”. No other match 3 has that to the extent this one does.
1. You can add up to 5 pieces of equipment to your character that can improve your build in various ways.
2. You can also craft additional unique equipment with runes. Runes are tough to get and often make the best equipment in the game.
3. You choose a class that has unique moves/a particular mana color focus. This makes each play different/require different strategies.
4. There are around 50 enemy spells that can be learned after capture them.
5. You can get a mount and train it for some minor additional synergy.
This is the main key. Choice and lots of ways to create your character.

The second key is the opponent diversity. There are dozens of different opponents in this game that have different strategies. There are castle with different builds to siege, dragons to fight, and status effects that can quickly wreck your game plan.

The third key is the story/world map. I admit it gets repetitive and the game could have been better with actual options in the story other than “follow the sword”, but it’s something. And the overworld map actually enables you to choose what you will fight and where you will go which makes the game fell well…more like a game.

Let’s contrast this with MatchR which though quite similar is inferior in my eyes. MatchR is just a gauntlet of enemies essentially. You clear 4 opponents on 3 floors, you can go to a break room on each floor, you can fight an a manger on each floor, and there is a quick chat before each fight. This makes it basically little more than a “boss run” of a game. matchR has some builds, but it’s far less. It just has stamps and some modifiers that do not affect gameplay that much. There are some strong moves and builds you can get form some characters in matchR but the choices are substantially less. Likewise all the opponents feel samey, and there are very few different ones. Given all these factors, you’ve more or less have seen it all within a few hours of matchR. Don’t get me wrong— matchR is not a bad game, but it really does feel like puzzle quest lite.

The Bad:
1. Some classes are just outright better than others. There is some optimization issues there. Paladin is broken because of its first move that has no cap, and crazy ability to heal.
2. The story gets repetitive as I said. Kill the two headed jerk, kill the big brute, slay the mechanical ox, build the ox, do various other stuff, kill the dark lord, maybe drink from the lake and become a god.
3. I would love even more diversity. There are enemy moves you cannot get that could really change the gameplay and even more equipment ideas that could further improve the game.

What would I want in a successor?
1. More of the same with regard to gameplay but probably with more options for spells/armor and better balanced classes.
2. Story with options and a map. Less important but it could give the game more replayability. And as I said before, the map really is a big aspect of the game.
3. Smarter enemy AI. Put simply, they are very dumb even on hard.most could kick your butt easily if they were smart, so you would need rebalance them.

What I wouldn’t want:
1. Micro transactions…seriously this is a plague on these types of games. It’s part of the reason the modern Puzzle quest-like games suck.
3. Heavy fan service and sexual themes. You would have to pay me to play Honey Pop…
4. Oversimplification. I would argue many modern games dumb things down. Even matchR is like a dumbed down puzzle quest. Menus are made to look cheap/clean instead of providing a unique style and atmosphere.

And yeah. Do with that what you will. That is how I feel about the title.

Another important bad thing to mention is Spell Resistance mechanic, it's complete bs. Either needs to be removed or done differently, maybe have a way of lowering it, or it lowers temporarily after each successful proc. Hard and Very Hard spell research is also horrible, yet simply needs lower requirement, like half or even twice as less. Also I'd rather have being able to avoid monster encounter tied to capturing it and not the mount level, since with the latter it's possible to never experience certain monster fights at all.
