Thoughts on the new steam controller update?

I heard before you needed to use an external program to run gamecube controllers, is that still the case?

Apparently not. Haven't tested for myself yet, but TOs were very happy when this update came out. I think it removed a lot issues, especially when more than one type of controller is being used. I think that's what the external programs were mainly being used for
