PAYDAY: The Heist
This topic has been pinned, so it's probably important

An actual FAQ
I've been playing this game for quite some time and there's some questions that are being asked over and over. I'll do my best to answer a lot of them in this post. Note that I'm also the author of the DAHM mod. This mod was made to unofficially update the game after Overkill abandoned it for PAYDAY 2 and fixes many bugs in this game and adds many of the most commonly requested features. I'm not affiliated with Overkill in any way and you'll have to take my word on that the mod won't do anything other than improve the game, just like you have to do for any other mod and application you're running.

The game is dead / Should I still buy it?
The game has around 100 players on average[steamcharts.com] and still has a small but active community. While its successor, PAYDAY 2, is much bigger on Steam and includes most of the maps, the games aren't carbon copies of one another. PAYDAY: The Heist is less forgiving and can be seen as a hardcore game that's meant to be difficult and is balanced around four player crews. If you want a more accessible game with customization, lots of weapon choices and a greater map pool then PAYDAY 2 is more for you. And while you can (partially) stealth some maps in PAYDAY: The Heist, don't expect too much about this mechanic.

PAYDAY: The Heist does not use any servers but connects individual players instead. The host player is the only one with all the information about the game so host migration is not possible. However, this means that the stability of the connection depends not only on your connection but also that of the other players. The only servers involved are Steam's matchmaking severs to connect players with one another, so if these go down playing this game with others shouldn't be your biggest concern.

How long does it take to complete this game?
That really depends on your understanding of completing the game. An average player can level up to level 145 in around 40-50 hours with normal gameplay and from that point you can get all the achievements. However, it's a difficult game and don't expect to get the 145+ achievements without a team to beat the heists. If you want to max out all challenges you're talking more like 300-500 hours depending on your skill level and play style.

When will this game go on sale?
We don't have a crystal ball and we can't tell the future. However, based on historical data[steamdb.info] it goes on sale roughly every three months.

If I buy the Wolfpack for this game, will I have it for PD2?
Yes, buying the Wolfpack DLC for PAYDAY: The Heist will grant you a license to use it in both games. The DLC with the same name for the second game will not grant you a license to use it in this game, but it can only be bought from key resellers anyway. The same thing applies to the DLC that comes bundled with the Ultimate Edition bundle for PD2. It's just a one way deal.

Can I run this game on my potato pc?
Probably. The game doesn't need much to run. For a first person shooter like this you should aim for 60 frames per second. If the ingame settings are not enough, then there's tweaks to significantly reduce the quality of the graphics. Just don't expect the best visual experience, even on high end PCs.

My game doesn't run / my game closes instantly. What's wrong?
For some reason the games dependencies are not automatically installed and don't come bundled with Windows. That means you have to install DirectX manually. For a webinstaller that includes all versions, see https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35. You don't have to manually install PhysX for your NVIDIA card if you're using the latest drivers.

If for some reason the web installer does not work, you can manually install the necessary file. Download the 32 bit version of d3dx9_40.dll and place it in %WinDir%/syswow64/ (or the game directory). You can find the file here: https://wikidll.com/microsoft/d3dx9_40-dll.

I want to make a backup of my save files. How do I do that?
While the game does have support for saving files to the Steams Cloud, you should not rely on this as a backup. By default you can find the relevant files in C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/userdata/<SteamID3>/24240/remote. If you have used multiple accounts, you can find the ID3 value with the use of external tools like https://steamid.io/. You'll need the numeric part after the last colon. The save000.sav file contains your options (and mask choice) and save099.sav is your progress file.

I'm using a monitor with a high refresh rate, but the game refuses to use it.
While the game does actually support setting the refresh rates for each resolution, the first and usually lowest refresh rate available is used when you set the resolution via the GUI. To fix this you can either manually edit the %LocalAppData%/PAYDAY/renderer_settings.xml file or use the DAHM mod, which lets you select the refresh rate from the GUI.

I'm running the game at a higher resolution than FullHD and everything looks so small. How do I scale the HUD?
You can't. There is HUD scaling, but it's only for SD to HD and adding full scaling support via mods is too much work for little gain. You're better off using a lower resolution as you won't get much of an increase in graphical quality in this game anyway. That being said, the DAHM mod does have an option to upscale the GUI.

Does my framerate have an impact on the games difficulty?
Yes, it does. The task scheduler that manages where cops go, who they attack and when they attack and updates once on every game tick / refresh. The actions of each individual unit, such as shooting and sprinting, are processed separately and also once per frame. So they shoot faster, react more quickly to events and move to your position faster when you play at 130 FPS (the limit on PC) compared to PCs that don't reach this framerate cap. The task scheduler is only involved when you shoot, but the other actions are per client. Since there is no normalization on the task scheduling (unless the host uses the DAHM mod), you may find some lobbies being much easier than others even if your ping to the host is similar.

I want to play this game with a controller. Can I?
While PAYDAY: The Heist does not officially support controllers, it's possible to enable it with the DAHM mod. No need to toy around with keyboard emulators, those don't give you the true analog input.

I would like to show what map I'm playing on Steam/Discord like PD2 does. Is this possible?
Yes, it is possible! Just not out of the box. You'll need the DAHM mod for features like this.

I'm coming from game x and I'm used to a low mouse sensitivity. How do I set it to the value I want in this game? The slider doesn't go down far enough.
By default you can set a multiplayer value between 0.3 and 1.7. If you want to use another value you'll have to use a mod like DAHM.

How do I boost the microphone volume for individual players?
You can't. If the volume is too low on average, lower the other sound sliders and max out the voice chat volume. Boosting your own volume isn't possible either nor can you see when you are transmitting something via your microphone. If that is not good enough you'll have to resort to external solutions like the external Steam voice chat or something like Discord.

I've seen people use a Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Russian version of the game, but I can't select it. How do I get that version?
These translations have been made by the community and are not officially supported by Overkill so use those at your own risk. If you still want to use them, you can find some here:

I found a bug. Where do I report it?
Unfortunately PAYDAY: The Heist no longer receives any official support. The DAHM mod fixes a lot of issues, but it can't do everything. If it's not fixed with the mod you can make a thread about it on these discussion boards, but it's probably not easily fixable by the community.

edit 2025-09-07: fixed dx installer url.

I bought the DLC. How do I use the STRYK/AK/GL40?
In this game you don't immediately have access to all the gear. You need to unlock them by upgrading your skill trees. You do this by earning money. Don't worry if you fail a lot at first, it's designed to be difficult and you'll get money for completing the objectives. You don't even have to win to get rich!

The interface confuses me. How do I choose which tree to level up in?
The GUI can be quite confusing to new players. The Heisting Guide for New Players has some screenshots that may help you with this. In short: You have to press the key assigned to the desired tree within the tab overlay screen. In the guide you can see a red rectangle in the screenshots and this is the area of interest. Here [1] corresponds to the assault tree, [2] is for the sharpshooter tree, etc. This mapping depends on the platform and cannot be changed (without modifying the game).

I reset my progress but I still have the golden mask. People say I'm cheating?!
Some masks in this game are tied to achievements. That means that you'll have access to those masks even if you did not unlock the corresponding challenges in game. For example you can still access the golden masks, the presidential masks, the santa mask and the "secret" masks even if your progress is at level 0 as long as you have the corresponding achievements unlocked. Note that the latter mask requires both membership in the PAYDAY: The Secret group and the Overdrill achievement. If people accuse you of cheating for this, they're probably just uninformed.

A cheater ruined my game. How do I report them?
There is no anti-cheat system in place for this game (other than the limited system implemented by the DAHM mod) and therefore the only thing you can do is kick them out of your lobby or leave the game. The DAHM mod also adds banlists so these bans become more permanent, but they only apply to your lobbies. On top of that you can also report a player to Valve by opening their profile and filling out the Report User form that can be found under the more button. However, it is not clear when Valve does anything with these reports or whether they're even used at all. Still, it's better than doing nothing.

I used a trainer and now I can no longer play the game. What do I do?
Some trainers can mess with your save file by adding invalid data to it. Unfortunately this isn't easily recoverable and you're going to have to remove all instances of this progress file. First disable the Steam Cloud synchronization for PAYDAY: The Heist on the updates tab in the games properties and remove the save099.sav file in both the location mentioned above for making backups and in %LocalAppData%/PAYDAY/saves/<Your Steam ID64>/. This file holds your latest progress even if you choose not to save it. Now you should be able to start the game again. Afterwards you can re-enable the cloud support.

I've seen players with level 193/194, but I can only level up to 145/193. How does that work?
Without the Wolfpack DLC the maximum level you can reach is 145. The DLC adds 48 more levels. That one extra level is an unintended side effect and some players have found a way to exploit that glitch. Levels above 194 are not possible without modifying the game. This by itself can be ignored as it provides no advantages to the player whatsoever. However, often it's combined with gameplay changing cheats.

Is it still possible to get access to The Secret Group?
Yes, it is. Make a recording of you and your team doing the two hour Overdrill challenge on Overkill 145+ and send it to the people that can accept your group join requests. See this thread for more details.

I'm in the Vyse/Secret group, but my mask does not show up. Now what?
Unfortunately that's a problem with how the membership checks are done in this game and affects Steam groups with more than 1,000 members. The solution is to use the unofficial DAHM mod that asks your Steam client instead.

You keep mentioning the DAHM mod. Where can I find it?
The DAHM mod is the most popular one and focuses on improving the game without touching the gameplay too much. Think of bugfixes, a cheat detection system, QoL improvements, etc. However, it's still not an official mod. You can find this mod on its dedicated group page and on Modworkshop[modworkshop.net] along with other mods for the game. However not all user mods are as strict about not changing the gameplay.

Are there differences between the characters or are they somehow connected to the classes?
No, the characters are purely cosmetic in this game: the only differences are the mugshot on your health bar and the voice you shout as. There are minor differences in what they shout to make them more unique, but that's it. No ties to classes and no advantages. The backgrounds on the upgrade menus are just for decoration.

How do I customize my weapons?
The only customization you can do to your weapons is disabling some of the visual upgrades. Open the upgrades menu and press [enter] on the corresponding upgrade. This effect is only visual and has no impact on the stats for that weapon. If you want to change their looks, you're going to have to use mods supplied by the community. Just don't change the weapon stats. You may think that since it's a co-op game such a thing has no impact on other players, but it can have if your weapons are stronger, need to take less (or more) ammo, etc. Play the game how the developers made it and don't try to mess with the balance.

I often see players with the Bronco, M308 and the GL40. Is this the best loadout?
This is the meta and many players will tell you it's the only viable setup besides maybe the Reinbeck when you want to play on Overkill 145+. However, this is not true and the best loadout really depends on the situation and pretty much all weapons are viable even on the highest difficulty. The M308 is a good all-rounder, but it certainly isn't the best choice in all cases. The only weapon you often want to avoid on Overkill 145+ is the B9-s as it doesn't do much damage. It is silenced though and does have a really good ammo pickup.

The team ai is bad. How do I make them not get downed all the time?
Practice. Just play with them a lot. Eventually you'll learn their strengths and weaknesses. They won't be able to carry you through the highest difficulties, but they can revive you if you get downed in a (somewhat) covered area and they can take a lot of hits before they get downed. Their speed compensates for their tankyness so don't run away too fast. Experienced players can win most games on the highest difficulties with only the help of the team ai, so don't think it's not possible.

I saw x and y in the game. How does that mechanic work?
Those questions are outside of the scope for this post. You should refer to guides that go into these topics instead. Here's a few (accuracy not guaranteed):

Had to split the post up for some reason whereas my WIP in a group post didn't appear to have a character limit. Ah well...

Also not a really objective thing, so I'll post this as a comment. Most of the active players hang out in the PD5Y Discord. See the PD5Y group on Steam for an invite. And unlike the group itself that requires some validation and moderation to keep the group clean, the Discord is much more open. Still, some people dislike the validation idea and you may see some posts with words that aren't so nice. :)

Thanks a lot for the outstanding effort and continuous support as usual but, I might disagree with you about B9 and framerate. Being disagree with you doesn't mean you are wrong at all but I just have different opinion according to my personal experience.

I will start with B9:
B9 can be used in all heists even on Overkill 145+ ( Locoverkill )
Actually, I think weapons in this game will not make big deal if the player doesn't know how to use them correctly like using the wrong weapon against the wrong enemy, reloading in front of enemies instead of switching weapon, relying too much on primary weapon without taking care of ammo management, fighting the enemies before taking cover first so you might find some players fail while they are using the best loadout in the game while others win with the worst loadout on the highest difficulty without even using medic Locoverkill is a good example.

Framerate:
I agree with you that playing at 130 fps will make the cops shoot and move faster than playing at low fps but, you and your Ai will also have the same thing as well so, the high fps player can aim better and move faster than the one play at low fps. If someone play at low fps he might have terrible aim, terrible move and terrible graphics as well due to running the game on a bad PC which might be not even for gaming.

Framerate shouldn't make big impact on the gameplay because I played the game at low fps and max fps130 and the result was almost the same Overkill 145+ has been beaten without DLC solo and some heists do not even require Ai nor medic so I think it doesn't matter if fps impact the gameplay or not as long as the player has enough game knowledge and strong desire to beat the game whatever it takes.
To be honest if someone used to play at high fps it might be too hard for him to go back to low fps and low graphics and that's why I wish I bought the game on PC in 2011 instead of PS3 because I was missing lots of fun.

Anyway, thanks again for sharing your long experience with us players need someone to help them and support them like you God bless you and lead you to heaven.

And how exactly is a pistol that needs 6 headshots on the most common unit and 10+ on cloakers and tasers viable on Overkill 145+? At most you can kill two normal enemies with it before you have to reload. Sure, the reload is fast and the ammo pickup is good, but seriously. I tried it with the better bots mod and it just took too long to kill the cops.

Based on the gameplay videos you used to have your points about the framerate make no sense either: the ai is so powerful at those low framerates that they hardly go down and therefore you don't even have to aim well. Because like I mentioned, the shoot actions are tied to the framerate. With a lower framerate the enemies don't shoot as much and thus the team ai won't take nearly as much damage. But I've posted that before. Like 5 times.

Game knowledge can make B9 a valid option on 145+ because loadout in this game won't make big difference if the player has no enough experience.
I respect your opinion that you don't like B9 or it doesn't work fine with you but, that won't change the fact it works fine for others on any difficulty even 145+ and I think I gave you facts recorded by videos to prove my point like Locoverkill which show us that B9 can be used in all heists on 145+ and if you are talking about 145+ solo then I have many videos about B9 and I made a special video about using B9 only on Overkill rep 0 at high fps. Notice that I said rep 0 where B9 doesn't have any upgrade and it was fine with me in FWB I didn't even need to use Amcar so it's not about B9 but it is all about the player who is using this pistol.

When I play on 145+ solo I usually try to stay close from my Ai and try to make them together so I don't need too much effort to kill the cops by using my B9 because I'm not the only one who shoot the enemies besides I need to know when is the correct time to use my pistol.
For example, I can use my B9 in Green Bridge against the blue cops and guards at the beginning or against 2 or 3 heavy swat if there is no assault while I'm taking cover but when I need to push harder and escort the prisoner to the tower I shouldn't use my B9. I hope you got my point by now.

Last point about FPS: What if I tell you that all I mentioned in my previous comment done at stable 130 FPS ? each video is showing fps counter and each heist has been beaten without DLC so may I have any explanation for that ?

This time I must agree with Zetarad. And give a +1 to his request.

The reason is quite simple. Newbies don't have the skill or the patience enought to use the B9-S in the way you describe.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm a true believer that every weapon in this and any other game will be usefull if is in the right hands despite their disadvantages to other weapons, that is an undeniable fact, but being honest and objective, the B9-S will not be useful in the hands of a player who lacks the skills and the knowledge to use it in the right way. You just have to choose a random newbie, watch him/her play and ask yourself, 'will he/she be able to use the B9-S in the way I do?'. And the answer will probably be no. If you're wondering why I'm giving to much importance to newbies, it's because this thread is clearly focused on them, reason why all your information, will probably not be usefull.

In my opinion, you're exposing a quite interesting point, but in the wrong thread. That's all. So please, stop arguing about this.

Of course there's a chance that you get lucky and are able to beat certain heists with only the B9-s or without a GL40. However, there will be many situations that lead to a fail that could've been avoided were you using the proper loadout. For something to be viable on 145+ you have to be able to use it to get out of bad situations and the B9-s simply can't do that. You may claim you've beaten all heists with those conditions. I don't remember you did and nobody can verify those claims because those videos are privately listed (and don't post them here pls, everyone can find your channel just fine as you advertise it enough). And even if you did, how many attempts did that take you?
This should be pinned plus disable (& delete) comments aswell.
