Free Game(s) of the Day -- [FGotD]
As some of you may already know, Valve (in part by the developers) release a game free for 24 hours. This is not to be confused by the 'free weekend' games. These games are entirely free to redeem for 24 hours and will stay on your account 'forever'.

We will try to catch all of them from here on out and update this thread (the 2nd post with historical free games as well as a link to the most recent FGotD) for those that may have missed it, or have yet to purchase the said game).

When did this start? Is there a post somewhere listing the games? How long will this be going on for?

This has been going on for quite some time. However the current Free Game of the Day will only last until September 24th at 10am Pacific. So anyone that doesn't have it yet should redeem (click the install button to redeem at least) before the given time/date -- otherwise you will have to purchase it.
I will update the 2nd post in this thread, as the list with a link to store page of the current Free Game of the Day. It will be constantly updated when one of us finds a Free Game of the Day (that usually only lasts for 24 hours to redeem) for you guys. Aside from that, there are no other lists that I am aware of.

There were past games but I'm just including last Wednesday's and today's, and so on from now.

It seems more like free game of the week. So far 2 Wednesdays in a row. When an anticipated game from a developer comes out it seems to promote that game and give it attention an older game from that developer will be given away for free and other titles slashed heavily.
Amnesia, Machine For pigs, Penumbra were all on my wish list. I was so grateful to finally have them off my wish list for about 8 bucks total that I bought Soma just to show my gratitude.
Coincidentally both promoted games work on Steam OS. I don't know if that is a factor in these promotions though. We will see what happens next week.

It's a rare thing that Steam (or rather developers on Steam) give away a free game, unless it's to promote the launch of a new product it just doesn't make much sense. Especially because Steam already has such high-cut sales. If we're lucky, we'll get another 2 free games next year :)

Indeed, just saw it myself even though I already had the whole pack.
But actually the whole pack is free if you redeem it from the package view (listed in the picture below). I've already had a couple friends PM me saying that they were able to redeem the whole package.
