It is insane to me the developers can look at the criticisms of the game and then double down on them

This review will be mostly brief. I am only going to preface this once that I am giving this game a positive review score due to how strong this game is in the genre it represents, but my review overall will be quite critical so I would advise anyone who thoroughly enjoyed this game and games of this genre to please understand my points from an objective view point of someone who is a strong variety player.

The Last of Us is a game series that have never sat well with me. The overarching story is bland and predictable, the gameplay is slow and linear, the gameplay itself is not very difficult and a lot of the gameplay design can be a bit bizarre at times and off-putting at times. But it is important to note that in some regards this is intentional.

The Last of Us Part 1 is specifically tailored towards its characters. The game play and overarching story are not the main focal point because it's about how the characters themselves view and interact with this story. Joel and Ellie have some great and humanizing interactions throughout the game that solidify their relationship. Puzzles are rather straightforward and repetitive because it's about how Joel and Ellie's characters interact with them, game play is slow and, subjectively, boring because it's not about expression as a player but expression for the characters.

Starting with the game play, it is extremely shallow at face value. It's about stealth and resource conservation. There are the odd environmental interactions such as being able to throw items lying around or craft something from nearby resources to help force enemies to move their locations. Non-combat generally don't have much to do at face-value, puzzles are as simple as find item and move it to where the game wants but there are extra goodies for attentive players who like to explore.

The overarching story is an extremely generic post-apocalyptic dystopia. There's an infection that makes people into 'zombies', there are different factions that took over after the Governments collapsed and people are constantly at each other's throats over resources. There is a character who is a potential cure to the virus and the main characters must reach a lab to make this cure.

Though the story itself doesn't really break any new ground, it's important to note that the sort of genre of zombie survival was relatively new when this game first came out, and was responsible for a lot of future tropes. It's also important to note that this game isn't too worried or busy about fleshing out this aspect. There is no great and constant twists, there are no nuances to the dystopia itself, it is very much presented how it is. The point isn't about fleshing the story but instead fleshing the characters in the story, how they react to situations, how they feel about situations, how they allign with topics. It allows for some great world building moments and to give hints to the player about upcoming areas or potential characters and engagements.

It is also important to note that at the time this game came out (prior to the remaster) it was one of the most visually stunning games of its time and an essential foundation for modern games in that department, but if this is your first experience with this game in this modern year, you will probably fail to notice a lot of the visual marvels this game presents since it is rather behind with modern games. That is not to say this game is not graphically impressive by any means but it will probably come across more subtly than was originally intended.

For me and many others, if gameplay is your main focus of video games, this game may not be for you. But if you enjoy slower, more chill gameplay with an amazing atmosphere and character relationship dynamic you will feel right at home. I had an extremely hard time personally to find enjoyment in this game, but I know this game was a founding pillar of modern gaming and a beautiful game for those who enjoyed it.

Everyone who doesn't recommend is just salty over the AI. That's honestly a stupid reason to say the game is bad when everything else is amazing.

Great game, fun to play. Love RTS games and this is a nice twist on them. My only complaint is sometimes you can get 'One punch man' in your prison and he quite litrally, 1 punches everything. Other then getting annoying inmates this games Normal mode and Escape mode are fun as hell to play.
