This review is a necessity at this point given the experiences I've had in this game for the low low cost of nothing. Little did I know when booting a free game on my Vive for the first time in January that I'd spend most of my free time for months revolving around it, but lo and behold, here I am, 1,350 hours (and counting) later.

So what, exactly, has VRChat done for me?

Let me list it out:

  • I've made good friends from around the world by jumping around like an idiot, running my mouth off about anything and everything, and spazzing out dancing in my living room.
  • I've become part of multiple communities of players and continually keep up with them outside of the game.
  • I've learned most of the basics and some of the more advanced features of Unity and Blender.
  • I took a crack at creating the first level I've ever made for a game in Unity, and still work to optimize it, fill it out, and make it better.
  • I've stayed up until 7 in the morning multiple times laughing at jokes, talking to people, and drinking with strangers, and woken my roommate up multiple times doing so.
  • I lost my self consciousness issues regarding dancing in public and I'm slowly working out my social anxiety issues while talking to other players.
  • I still lose myself in the worlds people make and the conversations I engage in 6 years later; it hasn't gotten old for me and probably won't as the game revolves around new experiences.

I've bought many games on Steam and played my fair share, but I've never come across something like this. This game gives back as much as you put into it, and I'm continually pouring more and more of myself into VRChat. Come say hi if you see me walking around, I'd be glad you did.
