I've played this game for a 100 hours now. I've learnt how to drag and accel, do a lot of ♥♥♥♥, yet this game is still too hard for me. The learning curve for this game is so big you'd have to be ready to invest more than a 100 hours of gameplay in this pile of ♥♥♥♥ to even become decent. The game has no competitive side and no matter what critic you go to that will say "this has the best combat" or even just "good combat" it really doesn't. The game is all about who exploits the most and who can exploit the most and a lot of techniques are so unreadable you can't do ♥♥♥♥. If you see some guy doing the ballerina dance when fighting you know he's a sweat.
When I first got the game I knew a bunch of people with a lot of hours spent on it, and I thought it looked cool, considering it was made by former chivalry competitive players. At first they said it was completely garbage and the combat is just broken as with the balance, I didn't believe them and I thought I just kept getting killed because I was trash at the game.

But now knowing a lot of stuff that new players don't, I can see why my friends were not so keen about this game. Dirty tactics like combo feint parry or broken animations like toe drags, no wonder there are no competitions around the game.

The developers are the ones who don't listen to any of the community suggestions and think they're doing the best thing for the game. One specific individual, i'm not going to name is the downfall of the management of this game. There are no serious tournaments because this game is just seeing who knows the most exploits, and the terrible matchmaking of ranked matches is just bruh.

Cosmetics. Listen, I like looking cool in video games, and a lot of the cosmetics in mordhau does look awesome but the price for some of them are way too high. Albeit this is just a nitpick, but levelling up and earning gold in this game is as slow as a turtle walking in thick mud. Horde gives you 1000 gold if you are at top and completed all 21 waves. And clearing through all 21 waves is no joke and especially due to the lack of players. The payoff is not worth the effort. Maybe there is a better way to level up but I haven't found it so far.

This game has an unresponsive dev team with a dwindling playerbase and I don't think it's getting fixed. If it does, thank god.

Update: Played the game after the eastern invasion update. Combo feint parry is gone, thank god. But that's it. The new map is great but this feels like a minor update rather than something we were promised. Horde mode's great but the progression is slow as ever.
Again, my opinion still stands the same.

I've played this game a ♥♥♥♥ ton on the Microsoft version of the game, and I have to say it really is one hell of an experience.
During my time playing, I started getting in the combat more and more and "mastered" stuff like quick switching, movement (ballista boosting, but still working on bhopping), etc. I'm not sure whether this is what ID software intended when making this game but it flows together very very well. They outdid themselves on gameplay with this game.

However I noticed the fair share of some of its flaws as well.
Eternal combat wise is really good, and dare I say it as one of the best, but a lot of really nice features 2016 had was stripped away. Like the really good atmospheric tint and some dark shadows. It looked awesome in 2016 and I understand why it wasn't in eternal (Playtesters for the game said they couldn't see the demons much). A lot of the sound effects (not to be confused with the music/soundtrack) were pretty toned down and subjectively didn't sound as good as it's 2016 counterpart. The super shotgun sounded very weak compared to 2016 shotgun (Thank god for the mods).

I also think the story was very weak. I understand that Doom was always combat based but they tried lore and world building yet the base campaign didn't sell me out on that regard, and just putting a bunch of codex paper entries throughout the map to collect and read does not express lore to casual players.
2016 had voiced testaments to make up for the lore papers and that was more immersive as it dived into the stories of the slayer and his foes. I know that there were some audio logs for eternal but they just felt generic and didn't actually add anything to the slayer's lore or anything and is just speculation from the scientist thirsting (lmao) over the slayer.

2016 seems as a predecessor to doom 3 which was great but eternal feels like the predecessor of the first and second doom games. Which is why I felt 2016 was more gritty and eternal felt retro.

It's a great game and definitely one of the best first person shooters. I do suggest you buy it at sale price as buying this at full price is in my opinion not worth it as it doesn't carry much replayability.

Took me this long, but this game is probably a little too late to start playing. Most of the community are people who play this for more than 1000+ hours, and literally I don't think that you want to spend that long to even get decent. The game is good, massively downgraded, never trust ubisoft, but is still a popular game. It all comes down on preference, if you want to play for hours and get gud, go for it. If you are just a one time player, don't even touch this game.
