i cant speak much on playing magic through arena and what issues may arise from that as i dont really know because im a newcomer (i fell for the spiderman capitalism in real life and went my way about learning how to play this game through here) and man, i wish i got into magic sooner. coming from a background that exclusively knew how to play pokemon (nope, i dont know how to play yugioh and i never learned. im the ultra outcast.) magic was like having a suffocating grip lifted off me because this game fundamentally answers every issue i have with pokemon, especially its lack of variety and individualism.

ive been running a deck that probably isnt even that good, where my win condition is to flood the board with cats and dogs and use rinoa and instant cards that give trample to overwhelm the opponent, and, have managed to rise up to gold within a week of learning the game. ive also never seen the same deck twice, really, outside of the occasional looping cheese deck. its been a total blast for me as a newcomer and a breath of fresh air coming out of pokemon's monotonous and ever powercreeping mess of a tcg. the core mechanics of the game and pure variety alone drove me into learning about magics history and delighted to know about the different means of play and especially its support for legacy cards in formats like commander.

so yeah someone else probably has more insight into why playing through arena is a lesser experience, and i would probably believe them. hell, about 10 hours into this i think i was starting to get why people dislike worlds beyond and the invasion of other ips into magic! im not one of them because i like aesthetic clashing and novelty, but that aside i havent been able to stop gushing about how much joy was brought to me specifically from playing magic and learning about it.

turns out you can make a really good telltale game by having actual gameplay in between the dialogue tree, oh yeah and the characters are so quickly lovable and effortlessly charming so far at least

a much more silly story compared to the previous game, but nonetheless with charming characters overall. some of the finest tuning gameplay wise here, and the job mixing mechanic makes for some seriously cool and personalized party combinations. probably the first final fantasy game ive found myself just loving the experience of overall with little to no complaints

so far this is the first final fantasy game i would say is truly great, charming characters, engaging story, very welcome gameplay enhancements, the whole package really. a significant step up from the 3 games before it

one step forward and like 5 steps back, ff2 was making some big moves and changes with the way the narrative was told and while the leveling was tedious in ff2 that was mostly because it wasnt really fleshed out yet, being a first attempt and all. ff3 backtracks to the point of having nameless blank slate characters and a basic narrative about collecting crystals to stop the big bad. just an underwhelming and redundant experience, although the introduction of jobs is very welcome (even though, this game practically forces it down your throat by tailor making every dungeon correspond with a specific one, which stings especially if you want to have mages on your team since theyre practically extinct between the start and end of the game)

if this is as bad as it gets im sure the following games will be great though, because for all its flaws its still somewhat of an enjoyable experience

leveling is annoying (though, with the pixel remaster its not nearly as bad since you can boost it in the configurations) but its really a significant step up from the first in terms of storytelling and characters
