If you're looking for a game with good character writing, good story, where your choices matter... this isn't it.

What disappoints me most is that there's potential here for an actual, complete, visual novel with complete characters who have potential to develop and be more than just one-dimensional flat characters. All of the bachelors and bachelorettes have interesting character designs and personalities that have potential, but the plot never gives them a chance to. As a result, it's difficult to become invested in these characters or really care about them at all. This hinders the game when it comes to replayability. The game is short (30-60 minutes but about 15-30 if you read the dialog fast), which can be good to replay but since none of the characters or paths are interesting, there's really no point to it. To me, I'd rather that a complete, longer and full experience was offered, rather than a game better suited for idling while doing something else. Every time I made a choice I ended up being punished, and since there was a complete disregard for explanation of game mechanics or exposition I ended up feeling completely lost throughout all of my playthroughs.

If you're just here to see stupid, boring, pointless monster antics with no real rhyme or reason, then this is the perfect game. Otherwise, I'd skip it.

Truthfully, the game almost lost me until the climax of episode one, and even then I still wasn't entirely invested.

I found the original Life is Strange's greatest achievements to be its creative use of the time travel mechanic, the innovative puzzles, and the awkward yet relatable characterization of the protagonist, Max Caufield. However, Life is Strange: Before the Storm does nothing remotely comparable to that of it's predecessor. This game does nothing to reinvent or refine the genre, and ends up feeling uninspired and tiring. The balktalk mechanic is the most unique aspect of the game, and while it is an interesting concept, it feels bareboned and unrefined, with little to no reward. Moreover, it's length is a fraction of that of any other in the genre (at least those that come to mind), and as a result, the story feels rushed and cut short. Lastly, most choices feel unimportant and often times, the game feels like it plays itself.

Overall, I feel that Before the Storm is still a good game, but it fails in comparison to the original. If you have not played the original, I highly reccomend playing this one first, in order to truly appreciate the game without any sort of pretenses or expectations.
