Where do I begin with this one?

I've played Doom. I've played Wolfenstein. But until now, I've never played any games from the Quake series.

...Until now. Boy do I wish I played Quake 1 sooner! It's a classic retro FPS that hits all the right notes. It has a very diverse group of enemies out for your blood, satisfying weapons to use, superb level design (as long as no Spawns show up, that is), a haunting atmosphere, and lots of secrets to find. I've played the whole campaign three times over, and I still can't get enough of it's terrifying vibe!

As if that wasn't enough, this enhanced release also comes bundled with the two original expansion packs, The Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity. Both have challenging new levels, new enemies and weapons that don't appear in the base game, and all new awesome soundtracks.

But wait! There's more! Also included are two brand-new expansions by MachineGames, the guys behind Wolfenstein: The New Order! Dimension of the Past and Dimension of the Machine are very solid all around. They're more challenging than the base game, yet still manage to keep that very Quake atmosphere despite not having new weapons, monsters, or music to work with. They're a ton of fun; whether it's in spite of the increased difficulty or because of it, I can't really say. Achievement hunters be warned, though; you'll need to play all 5 campaigns on the hidden Nightmare difficulty for 100% completion. Good luck!

Like the Doom I and II ports, Quake also supports curated addon campaigns, just in case you couldn't get enough Lovecraftian blast-a-thons in a single day. Deathmatch multiplayer is also included, being just as fast and hectic as you'd want from a multiplayer mode. Capture the Flag is also included in this package. I'm not a multiplayer guy, since I prefer the single player stuff, but it's still a nice addition for those who do love playing with others. You can play on maps from the campaign, or specially made maps built around multiplayer.

Overall, Quake is another great game I missed out on as a kid, and getting to play it now makes me realize this is currently the definitive way to play Quake 1! Whether you're facing Quake's hordes in the campaign or expansions, or your busy fragging away in multiplayer, Quake is the progenitor of many of the great FPS games in the late 90's and early 00's. It's influence can still be seen today, and I'm so glad I took the time to finally play it for myself!

I honestly can't recommend it enough!

The game where you get to wage war against fantasy-tech Nazis. How can I not recommend?

Very good gunplay, exploration, functional stealth, well-written story (mostly), plenty of variety in enemy types... yeah. There's a lot to love about this.

At time of writing, I haven't played the new DooM yet, but I think iD and Bethesda did a very good job with TNO.

9 of 10. get it if you can.

The usefulness of a laser-guided missile launcher is obvious in a game where explosive parachuting tours of enemy bases are sadistically entertaining. The Capstone Bloodhound lives up to its name, working the same way as the RPG in Half-Life 2. Launch a rocket, keep your crosshair on your target, then your shot will reliably guide itself to the mark.

If you have a choice of just one standalone DLC weapon, I currently recommend this one the most.

Don't be fooled by the words "explosive rounds." The Final Argument Sniper Rifle does NOT produce explosions; it is actually synonymous with the way real-world .50 caliber weapons fire rounds that make a big white burst when they hit something. The FA rifle is the strongest sniper rifle in the game, but its shop decription is a bit misleading.

I give it a very minor recommendation.

This thing ain't no V12 Vanquish from the James Bond movies, that's for sure. This weaponized sports car has the same stats as its unarmed variant, the Kerner Serpente. It is equipped with missile launchers, but sometimes I have a little trouble getting them to lock onto things.

Its weak armor makes it a poor choice for anything other than quick hit-and-run attacks.

It's a Pescespada SS speedboat with dual miniguns. ...That's all.

The weapons have the same issues that the guns on the Combat Buggy have: the guns only fire forward, and the fact that you're on water could make hitting targets even HARDER.

This vehicle is infinitely inferior to the Rocket Boat from the Bavarium Sea Heist pack...

Let me be clear. This vehicle is... not very good. It's just a regular buggy with machine guns. These guns only ever fire forward. This isn't a fighter jet! Having to face every target just to hit them in a land vehicle is a serious flaw!

Feel free to use it if it was a preorder bonus, or if it's one sale for a low price, but... it's not that good.

Who would've foresaw it? A scorpion-shaped assault rifle that fires explosive bullets.

SOLD!

Keep in mind, however, that this weapon uses "Rocket" ammunition, meaning that while it is more accurate and precise than, say, a regular RPG, the Kousava Rifle seems to pack a little less punch and requires a really steady aim when hitting smaller targets.

The Reaper Missile Mech is functionally identical to all other mechs from the Mech Land Assault pack. It does look a bit sleeker, though, and sports a nice eDEN paint scheme.

In terms of use, though, the only difference between this and other mechs is the weapon it uses, other than its GRIP. The Reaper mech uses a portable Fire Leech launcher: a single missile is fired, splits into 8 smaller missiles, and can hit up to 8 different targets if aimed right.

If you want a mech without going through the tedious tutoriel in the MLA campaign, get this.

...Seems like a little much for $5, though...

Okay. Now that I've FINALLY finished all three of these packs, I'm gonna do a little content round-up.

Here we go, everyone!

Sky Fortress

3 Story Missions
4 Challenges
1 Province/Region with 2 Settlements (2 more can be found on the mainland later on, for a total of 4)
New Support Drone
Bavarium Splitter Rifle, an Assault Rifle that fires energy bullets
Weaponized Bavarium Wingsuit with a boost, an Energy Cannon and Homing Missiles

Mech Land Assault

2 Story Missions
2 Challenges
1 Region with 4 Provinces, 12 settlements total
3 types of Mechs (Bavarium Splitter, Autocannon, and AI Support)
Bavarium Power Core Rifle, which can disable any vehicle

Bavarium Sea Heist

2 Story Missions
1 Challenge
1 Region/Province with 5 Settlements
Rocket Boat with trainable miniguns and heatseeking missile launchers
eDEN Spark Rifle, a psuedo-FOW that smites enemies with death beams (Doesn't work indoors!)
A New Series of Collectibles (18 eDEN Audio Tapes)

So, if you buy the Expansion Pass, you'll get this much extra content:

7 Story Missions
7 Challenges
3 New Regions, 6 New Provinces, 21 Settlements to Liberate
5 New Vehicles
3 New Weapons
18 Collectible Items
Bavarium Wingsuit

And the best part? After completing each pack, you're free to carry its content over into the main game!

I would say its worth buying the expansion pass. You get all packs for $5 less than buying 'em seperately. Plus, the extra Firestarter skins for the Parachute and Wingsuit is a nice bonus.

Amongst a few gripes I have (no submarines, shortage of challenges and settlements to liberate, and lack of a new type of collectible item), Just Cause 3's DLC packs add a lot more fun to the main game, which has a ton of stuff already. I look forward to playing it again, using the Rocket Boat to tear up the Offshore Rig Outposts (which were one of the biggest pains before!), and reaching isolated island settlements without being having to swim or find a boat/chopper. Plus, raiding outposts might be more entertaining with a big robot wrecking stuff up!

Overall: Get this pass. If you love Just Cause 3, you'll love all the extra fun the new content brings in.
