Had no hype for this game and only bought it on a whim after so many people raved about it on release. 3 play throughs later, including one successful Honour Mode run, and I've loved every minute of it.
I've heard some people say they don't want to play a turn based RPG, which is totally valid, but it's definitely worth a shot - if you play for less than 2 hours to still qualify for a refund I think you'd get a good idea of how badly you'd bounce off the RPG mechanics and can gauge if it's the game for you.
Definitely worthy of the praise!

Long story short is that if you're a Star Trek fan, this is a great game. It can be a bit janky, especially for folks playing the Quest 2 it seems, but honestly the fun of goofing around and cracking space jokes more than makes up for it.

Unfortunately, it's not as popular as it used to be, but you can still find a full crew most of the time. In fact, a good chunk of my hours were probably spent in the "lobby" of the game talking to people and debating which Star Trek show is the best, which honestly is just really pleasant. I've spoken to people while playing the game who are a bit shy and don't like the idea of playing with randoms, but I've found the vast majority of people who play are just nerds that want to have a fun time

Gameplay wise, it's pretty accessible - there's a tutorial that covers the basics of each station, and once you get a feel for those fundamentals they translate well to the other 2 ships. On top of that, if you find a game with an experienced captain, they can help you learn more nuanced strategies or tricks each station can use.

Great game to drink some beers, make some Star Trek jokes, and blow up aliens!

While I clearly haven't played the game on Steam yet, I've been following Dwarf Fortress for almost the last 10 years. I've done things like pump magma from the bottom of the world to the surface, fist fought giants and cyclops, built a massive cathedral on the summit of a fortified mountain, and dug prison cells for elves that allowed brown sludge that rained from the sky in an evil biome to slowly melt their skin.
I would estimate that I have at least 1000 hours in Dwarf Fortress, and that entire time it was free, a passion project of Tarn Adams and his brother Zach. As soon as I got the email that I could pay for this game, I jumped on it, because they have earned my money several times over.
If you have never tried Dwarf Fortress, but have heard the stories that have circulated on the internet about it, I highly recommend checking this version out, as it seems to be much more accessible in terms of controls and graphics (not to mention the fantastic music). For veterans of the game, it does seem that there is a bit of re-learning to do, since there are actual buttons in the game that you use your mouse to click, which is quite different from how the game has been controlled previously.
All in all, Dwarf Fortress is a wonderfully free colony sim, which allows for amazing stories to unfold simply by observing - I am very glad it has finally reached a place where the Tarn brothers are happy to sell it, and I hope that it reaches a whole new audience because of it!

I think I can describe why I love this game with a story:
When I first started playing Unreal World seemed like a really daunting game. I do enjoy overly complex, simple graphics games such as Dwarf Fortress, but when I picked up Unreal World I think I was burned out. That said, eventually I started a game where I spawned on an island surrounded on all sides by rivers, with a character who could not swim. Eventually I found that there was a wild pig living on that same island - I spent days tracking it down and subsequently chasing after it until I was finally able to stab it to death with my knife.
Finally, with fresh meat and a hide, I began to formulate a plan of tanning the skin, creating rope to make a raft with, and then getting the hell off the island. It took days, my meat spoiled and it was my only source of food. For days while I worked on the hide I was forced to eat rotten meat in the morning, vomit in the afternoon, and then pass out in the evening.
Finally, after finding the logs for the raft (due to not having an axe) I was able to slap together a raft. I travelled down river for about half a day and found civilization, traded the rest of the hide for much needed food, and stayed in the village until I was longer dying of malnutrition.
I ended up continuing to play with that character, built a log cabin, and actually survived the winter! I feel like this was the trial by fire I needed to fully understand the game.
Unreal World is at its least fun when you are doing well (well stocked cellar, your own settlement), but getting there is amazing because there's so much working against you. If you try to optimize your play, or murder anyone you meet in the wild for easy items, you may be doing yourself a disservice. This is the most fun I've ever had freezing to death!

Mordhau is probably one of the most simultaneously frustrating and rewarding experiences I've had in my time playing games online. I never played Chivalry, and I only played Mount and Blade singleplayer, so this was a unique experience for me. I found that some "technique" transferred to this, but I still found myself getting my ♥♥♥♥ pushed in constantly. This game makes you feel like you're a regular soldier among many, ready to die in an instant without ever seeing your attacker.

And then you get better at the game, and I swear that the first time you swing a sword and three heads come off, that all the hours spent getting smacked down by better players is completely worth it - easily my favourite game of 2019.

It may not be perfect, but this is the closest you'll get to feeling like a badass sword-master if you can stand to put the time in to get there!
