🏝️Frutiger Aero is a design style / internet aesthetic popular between about 2004 and the early 2010s, and then revived around 2022-2024 via social media.

🪼It combines two inspirations in its name:
🪼Frutiger: referring to Adrian Frutiger, the Swiss type designer behind the Frutiger font, which is clean, legible (“humanist” sans serif),
and widely admired.
🪼Aero: referring to the Windows Aero UI design language (Vista, Windows 7), with its glossy, semi-transparent and light-filled surfaces,
glassy effects, reflections, etc.

🌎The style grew out of tech advances + user interface design needs. As devices, screens, graphics got better, designers pushed for
more visually rich UI (glass effects, shine, reflections) to make tech feel more tangible or “friendly.”
It was part of the transition from the loud, “Y2K” style (late-’90s / very early 2000s) toward more polished, believable digital surfaces –
before the shift toward flat/minimalist interfaces in the 2010s.

💚By the early 2010s, minimalist & flat design (less gloss, fewer skeuomorphic elements) began to dominate, producing a decline in the
use of Frutiger Aero in mainstream UI.
🍃The name “Frutiger Aero” was given retrospectively in 2017 by Sofi Lee of the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute (CARI). Before
then, many of its features were just considered part of “Web 2.0 design” or skeuomorphic UI.
There's been a revival starting ~2022-2023, especially on platforms like TikTok, Reddit, etc., where people are nostalgic for that visual
style.
