The best thing about having a partner who also does medieval reenactment is that you can text them like ā€œdo you want a sexy leg pic šŸ˜ā€ and when they obviously go ā€œof course šŸ‘€ā€ you send them a close up of a really nice piece of leg armour. And then they aren’t even mad and go ā€œyeah that is sexy as hell, thank you.ā€

It would, of course, be remiss of me to not include examples of these sexy leg pics. Try this one simple trick to find out if your partner is someone with taste!

A human skeleton CAN be nude, but it’s reverse of a living person. The more a skeleton is covered, the more nude it is UNTIL it reaches the point of full coverage at which point it’s not nude anymore.

This is why a skeleton knight wearing a full suit of armor is not nude, a plain fully-exposed articulated skeleton is not nude, but a saint’s skeleton on display wearing jewels and fancy clothes can feel uncomfortable. It’s also part of why zombies with the skeleton partially exposed unnerve us.

A partial or disarticulated skeleton can’t be nude. And there are exceptions for parts on a skeleton that are normally unclothed on a living person. So that armored skeleton is not immediately very nude if they took off the helmet. They also wouldn’t be more nude if they wore only a helmet and nothing else. However, if that skeleton knight took off just the armor shoes? If they only removed the crotch armor, so the wind whistles through their pelvis? That belongs in a strip club or an art gallery.

Here are some BW Printer-friendly versions of fliers and info from the ACLU and one from activists, about how to handle ICE that you can print up and distribute or post next to the door as a reminder for yourself, etc.

Remember the following if you encounter ICE or Border Patrol: * You have the right not to open the door to your home, unless the agent has a signed judicial warrant. An administrative warrant does NOT grant ICE permission to enter or search your house. * You have the right to ask an ICE officer, "Am I free to leave?" * You have the right to not answer immigration officers' questions and to tell an immigration officer, "I choose not to say anything." * Even if you exercise your rights, ICE may still detain you. * If ICE tries to detain you, do your best to stay calm. Do not run away and do not resist.ALT
When ICE Shows Up At Work KNOW YOUR RIGHTS If ICE is at the door of your workplace: * Stay calm and do not run away. * Don't open the door. Ask if the officers have a warrant signed by a judge and if they say yes, ask to see the judge's signature. (An "administrative warrant of removal" - or ICE warrant - does not give ICE The legal authority to go inside.) * If ICE doesn't have a warrant signed by a judge, tell them "I do not give you permission to enter this building." * If ICE enters by force, do not interfere or resist. * If it is safe to do so, take notes about officers' names, badge numbers, what they take, or who they arrest. Also, you have the right to take out your phone and record the officers as long as you do not interfere with what they are doing. If ICE approaches you while you're working: * Stay calm and do not run. * Ask officers if you are free to leave or to go back to work. If yes, tell officers you will not speak with them and resume working, or calmly leave. * You have the right to remain silent and do not have to answer any questions by officers, such as whether you are a citizen, undocumented, or where you were born. * IF you have valid immigration papers, you should show them in an immigration agent requests them. Never lie about your status or provide fake papers. * If officers tell you to line up with others based on your immigration status, you have the right to stay where you are, or can move to a safe place that isn't part of any line. You can tell the officers taht you are invoking your right to remain silent. If you are forced to move, don't resist. * If officers ask to search you, your property like your cell phone, or your workspace, you have the right to say "No, I do not consent to a search." Do not resist if they attempt to search your belongings without your consent. If you are arrested at your workplace: * If you are arrested, you have the right to remain silent and contact a lawyer. * If you do not have a lawyer, ask officers for a list of free or low-cost legal services providers. * Do not answer any questions or sign any document without first speaking to a lawyer. * Ask for copies of all your immigration documents. Here’s the thing - ICE Watch is working!

CL: Mentions of specific types of misogynistic violence, toxic-masculinity-reinforced violence patterns

In Minneapolis, we’re already seeing the success of ICE Watch. There are countless videos from ICE Watch observers that show agents leaving without detaining anyone after they encounter resistance. There are currently about 3,000 ICE agents in Minnesota, but the Department of Homeland Security claims they have only arrested 2,400 people — less than one person per agent.

ICE Watch organizers have also observed that it takes many more agents to make a single arrest when they are around. In other cities, ICE traveled in groups of two or three, but in Minneapolis, we primarily see groups of 6 to 12 agents. The Department of Homeland Security has pulled agents from other cities to ramp up efforts in Minnesota, which guarantees there will be fewer deportations from the places they left. Plus, ICE’s fixation on breaking up ICE Watch groups and detaining observers — often white citizens — has interrupted its original mission.

The entire operation is becoming slower and more resource-intensive. There is good reason to believe that more immigrants are with their families tonight because of ICE Watch.

ICE is coming to a city near you: things you should know from a tumblrina on the ground in the twin cities

i know i am usually pretty hehe haha on this app and here to generally mess around and have fun about television however, the circumstances of the last few weeks in my city and state have been truly so dire that it feels impossible to even pretend like that is an option right now. and i like to help so here is what i know:

yesterday, january 12th, border patrol commander greg bovino gave a very weird interview to the minnesota CBS affiliate WCCO, in which he lied repeatedly but importantly noted that once they “[get] bad things off the streets, we’re off to the next city.” we have seen increased immigration enforcement since day 1 of the new trump administration with many cities pushing back against operations already but, as what has been highly reported, nothing as large as the scale of the current operation in MN. plus with the pushback they have received here, these freak individuals will certainly have new motivation to incite violence wherever they go. use this as a little cheat sheet to prepare yourself for when it is your turn or, to jump in to the action rn and help out our immigrant communities in MN.

WHAT MN IS DOING TO PROTECT OUR NEIGHBORS

  • following ICE vehicles, observing their arrests and interactions with the public <- this is obviously not without risk. many people are being harassed, physically injured, tear gassed & pepper sprayed, arrested, and as we know, killed when doing this. however, it is still the most useful tactic in intervening with these operations.
  • donating, collecting, and distributing food & household necessities for vulnerable families so they don’t have to leave their home. there are some incredible operations going on in the twin cities and the surrounding suburbs in order to get this done. if you want to help minnesotans i’d recommend looking into the work of places like smitten kitten, wrecktangle pizza, the immigrant defense network, MIRAC, and MN ice watch. if i were in a vulnerable city (aka blue state) i’d start thinking about groups, organizations, churches etc in your area that could run similar networks and prepare stockpiling donations.
  • businesses are operating with reduced (or even fully closed) hours to protect patrons and staff. many have signs in their storefront windows indicating that ICE can not enter. the one i linked is from etsy however organizations in your area will likely have them for free.
  • finding out which hotels (usually near a major airport) agents are staying at and protesting all night long being loud as fuck. + boycotting these hotels in the future
  • 3D printing whistles! using these whistles in order to alert when ICE is near.
  • building online networks and systems to notify of ICE’s whereabouts. NOTE! ICE is using cell phone location data to track & identify people!!!! use your best judgment, be smart, & turn your location OFF!

notes for VULNERABLE/UNDOCUMENTED PEOPLE and their families

  • get an action plan in place. i know it sucks to talk and think about. i know it is unfair but figure out worst case scenarios and what to do in them. even if you’ve been here for decades and have felt relatively safe in that time, i do suggest communicating with family and making a plan regardless.
  • for PROTECTING MINORS: in minnesota we have something called a delegation of parental authority (DOPA). this is a notarized legal document that delegates the authority and care of minor for one year if their parent or legal guardian can not. i would highly suggest looking into the steps of declaring parental authority in your own state and starting the process asap. (it is relatively easy here in mn! you just need to have one parent present to sign the document and get it notarized)
  • prepare as best you can for time off work, a lot of time spent in the house. get little stuff done like tabs for your car renewed, any insurance issues taken care of, doctor’s appointments done etc. start talking with your church or immigrant organizations in your area about getting supplies delivered to your home when needed.
  • PEOPLE WANT TO HELP! they really do. i know it is so fucking terrifying but there are so many people who do want the best for everyone in their community. if you need help please ask for it.

other general notes: they’re arresting literally anyone in MN, citizen or not. they’re harassing kids at school (minneapolis schools have allowed for children to learn from home until february 12th). they’re arresting people at work. it does not matter. a lot of people here are carrying their passports and other documentation to avoid this. you don’t have to give anyone your identification even when asked but unfortunately many who refuse have been met with violence. they’re going into hospitals, homes, schools, businesses and they don’t have warrants. of course know your rights but be aware they really don’t give a fuck. they’re arresting first and asking questions later.

most importantly people working for ICE and border patrol have something deeply wrong with them. they’re disgusting, immoral people whose “work” will be a stain on their lives and this country until the end of time. and i can not stress this enough, they are so fucking stupid. they are not stronger than us. they are not smarter than us. they are not more righteous or justified in any of their actions and eventually the day will come that their most prized leader turns on them, dies, or both. they will never be forgiven.

with that i leave you with two videos of agents eating shit on the ice that i can’t stop watching. fucking pussies.

love ya. be safe

a biome so unique in south africa that it’s earned an entirely new biome classification for itself. so many plants are endemic to this area, and ofc it’s under threat of extinction.

It’s a wonderful place! I had the privilege of visiting the fynbos last year and it was as amazing as these photos show and more!

so happy and free

this is going to be a silly reblog but i have kind of a fixation on animal qualia and the idea of an animal’s umwelt, so i ended up wondering whether pudding was actually ā€œenjoyingā€ this.

which meant i went and read about snail brains.

here’s the bad news, at least by human standards:

snails do not have anything like a centralized brain. their nervous system is made up of small clusters of neurons (ganglia) that mostly handle very local tasks. they don’t have a cortex, they don’t build big integrated models of the world, and they almost certainly don’t experience things like appreciation, anticipation, or savoring.

pudding is not looking at the sky and thinking it’s beautiful.

snail eyes are basically light sensors - they can tell bright from dark, but not form images. snail ā€œtasteā€ is done through chemoreceptors on their tentacles and around their mouth. those receptors don’t produce flavor the way ours do; they just detect chemical compounds and sort them into ā€œapproach,ā€ ā€œignore,ā€ or ā€œavoid.ā€

so there’s no evidence that snails enjoy food, or wind, or views, the way mammals do.

and that does sound kind of sad. but then i thought that maybe we are asking the wrong question.

snails do have valence. they detect aversive things (like salt or dryness) and withdraw from them. they detect non-aversive or beneficial conditions (like moisture) and stay extended. when pudding is stretched out like this, it means his nervous system is basically saying ā€œthis is safe; nothing is wrong.ā€

if we define pleasure not as our human experience of dopamine and reward chemicals but instead as ā€œthe absence of aversionā€ - a state where the organism is open to its environment instead of defending itself - then this does count as something positive, even if it’s extremely nothing like human enjoyment.

pudding isn’t appreciating the wind. but his body is registering humidity, safety, and the ability to keep functioning, and that matters to him in the only way his nervous system can make things matter. he does not think ā€œthis is great, this is awesome, i love the weatherā€, because he doesn’t think in the way we do at all, but the neurological action in his ganglion tell his body that he is safe, that the moisture is an acceptable level, that it’s not too dry or windy, and that there’s nothing imminently threatening.

i think a lot of the sadness comes from assuming that a good life has to look like ours: full of enjoyment, meaning, and aesthetic experience. but a snail isn’t missing those things. its world just isn’t built to include them.

snails don’t have a sense of flavor. they don’t even have tastebuds. this seems like a gimme, right? but again that might be asking the wrong question about what ā€œtasteā€ is. biologically speaking, it’s chemoreception. we taste sweet because it indicates high value, high calorie sugar molecules. we taste salty for salt, umami for proteins. so in what way does pudding’s chemoreceptors differ from ours instrumentally? we can say ā€œby our human perspective, pudding can’t experience "preferenceā€ or ā€œsavoringā€ or ā€œanticipation of delicious foodā€ā€œ, but from pudding’s perspective we have radically overengineered ourselves for the task at hand. pudding can tell what’s salty, what’s high value, what has the chemicals he needs. the functional outcome is that he can discriminate food souces based on their composition. is that not taste?

so maybe the point isn’t "this is sad because he can’t enjoy it,ā€ but ā€œthis is a reminder that minds come in radically different shapes, and value doesn’t have to be rich to be real.ā€
