[De Profundis Borealis] isn’t called that because I’m up on Latin; it’s because I’m interested in books and music and art. I think it’s fairly well known that Oscar Wilde wrote a letter called De Profundis. That means ‘from the abyss’ or 'from the depths,’ I guess, interpreted as 'from the other side’. And borealis means 'northern’. So, for all you black metal fans, it’s one of the most Immortal-esque titles, really, because it means 'from the northern abyss’.
The song was always intended to sound, in a way, kinda like a black metal song—I know it’s not a black metal song, so you don’t have to fucking get going—but the idea was for it to resemble the feeling of a snowstorm. Something that just brutally, relentlessly is covering all sight with this whirlwind of snow and ice. Hence the sort of hectic, gallopy continuation through this endless attack of chugging. And it’s a song, lyrically, about regret.
