Okay I know not everyone ships them but one of the reasons I love Mako and Raleigh as a possible pair so much is that it flies in the face of so many stories (that are STILL being written) where Guy Who Is Going To End Up With The Girl™ underestimates her at first until she proves him wrong, because All Great M/F Relationships™ must be built on this concept for some reason despite the fact that it’s weird and somewhat concerning????? At no point in the movie is Raleigh under the impression that Mako isn’t capable. He’s surprised by her at first because she isn’t what he’s expecting, but beyond that he’s never like “lol you’re a girl who’s been stuck behind a clipboard for her entire life there’s no way you could be a pilot.”
Instead when she opens up about her aspirations, Raleigh lights up and is all “Oh word????? What are your stats” and even though he’s honest about it being harder in practice than in theory he’s very encouraging and seems to believe in her. The sparring scene later isn’t about her proving him wrong for underestimating her, it’s about their connection confirming what he already suspects–she is capable and deserves a shot at being a pilot despite the risks. He was her #1 cheerleader from the moment he met her and I want more couples to be written like this
