Normal has been ripped away from her. Her mother was murdered, her brother had sacrificed himself to save humanity from magic, her vision is now impaired… and she can’t even shower without having a weapon within arm’s reach.
It haunts her, the vulnerability, exposure, hot water stinging muscles that’ve run cold with fear. Caitlyn tries not reflect on that moment if she can help it. Snuck up on in her own home, the small place known for privacy to be respected. Kidnapped by a maniac. But she reminds herself she’s safe, Violet just beyond the closed door… yet Caitlyn keeps her gun close just in case. Always glancing to make sure it’s in its place, reluctant to let herself relax, calming breaths shallow against a quickened heartbeat. Eyes closed, Caitlyn swears she can still hear Jinx’s giggles echoing around her.
Then… arms are around her waist and Caitlyn panics, trauma putting her right back in that moment. Instinct makes her fight this time, wrestling free, gun grabbed, finger on the trigger, desperate to see that Shimmer fade from Jinx’s eyes when she pulls it. ‘ Go on. Do it… Cupcake~ ’ a coax, a taunt… two voices in overlapping harmony. ‘ Cupcake. ’ and Jinx fades with the steam gently wafting out the open bathroom door… leaving Caitlyn finding herself staring down the barrel at “ Violet. ” A choked whisper of defeat, face flushed with shame.
She’s numb, barely registering Violet’s attentive care escorting her out of the shower, toweling her off — Caitlyn’s shaken from almost putting a bullet between Violet’s eyes. It’s why she can’t look into them now, raw determination making her hands still shake, the gun’s weight fresh in her hands. Kisses are like gentle snowflakes tickling her face, helping Caitlyn find her words again, nothing but apologies falling, tears with them. To think if she hadn’t regained control, hadn’t snapped out of her living nightmare…
How real it becomes, the importance Violet’s life has become. Caitlyn confesses so, knowing without Violet, there’s no world worth living in anymore. She doesn’t expect much, or for Violet to forgive her, perhaps fearing her is best after all. Uncontrollable, untrustworthy, can’t even shower without being scared. Instead… Violet reassures, touch so soft Caitlyn feels it on her heart, lips earnestly finding hers in passionate haste.
